Before comparing brands, decide whether you want nine-wicket US backyard croquet or six-hoop garden croquet: the games use different layouts and equipment. Then check the mallets, balls, hoops, included pieces, and storage rather than relying on a product’s “complete set” label.
Choose your croquet format first
Two common backyard formats call for different equipment. The United States Croquet Association’s nine-wicket backyard rules use nine wickets, two stakes, and a double-diamond layout. The Croquet England garden rules describe a six-hoop game played with four balls. These are distinct traditions, not interchangeable counts for one universal set.

When shopping, confirm the product description names the format or lists the actual number of hoops or wickets, stakes, balls, and mallets. Check whether rules are included and that they match the equipment. A set advertised for backyard play is not automatically a six-hoop garden set, or vice versa.
Match the set’s quality to how often you will play
For occasional games or a set that needs to travel, portability and a lower-cost build may be reasonable priorities. For frequent garden play, look for more substantial mallets, balls, and hoops. Croquet England notes that most garden sets are not intended for club use; tournament equipment is a separate category.

Its selection guidance describes low-end garden mallets as generally around 2 pounds or less and calls about 3 pounds an ideal weight. That is practical guidance, not a universal specification or independent durability test. Consider who will swing the mallet and how it feels with the chosen balls.
Compare the core components
Mallets: weight, material, and fit
Check the mallet material, handle shape and length, weight, and whether the ends of the head are protected. Croquet England notes that ash or hickory handles may appear in better sets, and that an octagonal handle can help a player sense the mallet’s direction. A heavier mallet with a protected head may better withstand regular use, but it may be tiring or unwieldy for some players. Match it to the users rather than treating heavier as automatically better.

Balls: weight and material
Ball weight should suit both the players and the mallets. Croquet England’s ball guidance says 12-ounce balls may suit young children and lightweight mallets; regulation-weight balls may suit more enthusiastic players. Its set guide cautions against pairing heavy 16-ounce balls with very light mallets. Composite or plastic balls are described as more durable than alternatives in that guidance. Check a set’s stated ball weight rather than assuming all balls are alike.
Hoops: wire and ground hold
For a garden set, Croquet England recommends thicker wire. Straight-wire legs without a “carrot” are adequate for casual garden play; heavier tournament hoops use shaped legs to hold the ground more firmly. If hoops will be moved often or used on softer ground, consider how securely their legs are intended to sit, without confusing casual-garden equipment with tournament gear.

Check what the box actually contains
For six-hoop garden play, Croquet England’s stated minimum is two mallets, six hoops, one centre peg, and four balls—blue, red, black, and yellow. Some sets include four or more mallets, a bag or box, clips to mark the next hoop, or corner flags. Contents vary, so verify the listing rather than assuming accessories are included.
Storage affects convenience: nylon bags and compartmented bags are portable, while wooden boxes and trolleys can provide more protection but add weight. Treat storage and extras as secondary to sound mallets, suitable balls, and sturdy hoops.

Can you play croquet in a small yard?
Yes. The USCA’s full-size nine-wicket court is 100 by 50 feet, but its rules allow the layout to be scaled to the available yard. Croquet England says garden croquet can be adapted to almost any lawn size or shape. For semi-serious garden play, it recommends an unobstructed area of about 17.5 by 14 metres; this is a recommendation, not a minimum for casual games.
A manicured bowling green is not required. Ordinary grass is usable, although a reasonably short, smooth surface makes play easier: hollows and bumps can send balls off course and make shots frustrating. Before setting out the hoops, identify a clear playing area and adjust spacing to the lawn.

A practical buying checklist
- Format: Does the set match the rules you plan to use—nine wickets and two stakes, or six hoops and four balls?
- Players: Are there enough mallets, and are their length and weight workable for everyone?
- Ball and mallet pairing: Are the ball weights stated, and do they suit the mallets and players?
- Construction: Are mallet heads protected, and are the hoops made with appropriately thick wire for garden use?
- Playing area: Can you adapt the layout to your lawn, and is the surface clear enough for reliable play?
- Contents and storage: Are the rules, balls, hoops or wickets, stakes or peg, and carrying case you need actually included?
Croquet Canada also publishes equipment classifications as a practical guide for distinguishing informal through tournament use. It can help clarify categories, but it does not replace checking the contents and specifications of the set you are considering.
