Choose temporary traffic control and detour signs from the site’s approved traffic-control plan—not from a generic sign list. The plan should reflect the road, work activity, duration, visibility and physical constraints, and the needs of every affected road user. Check the current MUTCD, the applicable state or local supplement, and the requirements of the public body or official with jurisdiction before specifying, buying, or installing signs.
Start with the authority and the approved plan
The public body or official with jurisdiction is responsible for the temporary traffic control (TTC) plan and devices. For a site roadway open to public travel, the owner with jurisdiction has that responsibility. In practice, the project team should confirm which authority controls the road and use its approved plan and current standards as the starting point.

The Federal Highway Administration identifies the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 11th Edition with Revision 1, dated December 2025, as the current federal publication; Revision 1 took effect March 5, 2026. State and local requirements may also apply. Verify the current MUTCD text and the jurisdiction’s adopted standard when preparing a project, especially for sign details that may have changed since earlier editions.
- Confirm who approves the TTC plan and who may authorize changes.
- Check the current MUTCD edition and any state or local supplements adopted for the project.
- Use the project plan to determine the sign sequence, placement, supports, and any required regulatory controls.
- Do not treat a supplier’s sign catalogue or product listing as approval for a particular road or detour.
Work out what the site and road users require
There is no safe, universal sign schedule for “a construction site.” The MUTCD identifies factors such as highway type, road-user conditions, work duration, physical constraints, and how close the work is to road users. The selection also needs to account for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and people with disabilities. A plan that redirects vehicles but leaves people walking or biking without a usable route is incomplete.

- Work and exposure: Identify the work area, how long it will be present, and how near workers, equipment, and temporary traffic controls are to moving traffic.
- Movement through or around the site: Determine whether traffic will pass through a changed roadway, be restricted, or be sent onto another route.
- All affected users: Identify pedestrian and bicycle access, including how people with disabilities can navigate any changed or alternate route.
- Site constraints: Account for available space, sight lines, installation limits, and other physical conditions that affect where signs can be placed and seen.
Choose signs by the job each one must do
Temporary signs generally serve warning, regulatory, or guide and information functions. A single sign does not necessarily cover all three: the plan may need to warn of a change, communicate a restriction, and direct people along a route.
| Sign function | What it communicates | Examples and planning use |
|---|---|---|
| Warning | Alerts road users to a condition that may not otherwise be apparent, such as a speed reduction or narrowed road or lane. | The W20-1 ROAD (STREET) WORK sign is a general work warning. MUTCD guidance places it in advance of the work space or a detour. |
| Advance detour warning | Alerts road users ahead of a detour onto a different roadway or route. | The W20-2 DETOUR sign is used in advance of that kind of detour. Its distance legend may state a distance or use “AHEAD.” |
| Regulatory | Communicates applicable traffic laws or restrictions through or around the work zone. | Examples include speed, parking, or road-closure restrictions. The project authority determines which controls apply. |
| Guide and route information | Explains the route to follow, the destination, or how to return to the original route. | MUTCD M4-series detour signs and plaques include route-direction options. The M4-10 Detour Arrow may be used where a detour route has been established. |
| Pedestrian or bicycle detour | Identifies an alternate path for people walking or biking when their normal path is affected. | Available sign designs include Bike/Pedestrian Detour, Pedestrian Detour, and Bike Detour. The plan must also account for people with disabilities. |
Make the detour understandable from decision point to return
A detour needs more than an advance warning sign. The MUTCD says a detour must be adequately marked with standard temporary route and destination signs so road users can follow it and return to their route. Plan the signing as a continuous sequence: give notice before the turn, direct people at route changes, identify the destination as needed, and show how to rejoin the original route.

- Quality Material: these stop slow signs for traffic with wooden handles are made of sturdy non rust aluminum alloy that resists rusting and bending, solid and waterproof, so they can serve you for a long time
- Size of the Sign: our stop slow warning sign measures about 13 inches/ 33 cm and the wooden handle measures about 12 inches/ 30 cm long, you can hold them easily, and they are easy to storage, just put them against the wall
- Safe and Security: whether for temporary or long term use, this slow stop signs can meet your needs; You can control the speed of the vehicle and stop it, which greatly improves safety on busy roads
- Give advance notice. Place the W20-1 ROAD (STREET) WORK sign in advance of the work space or detour, as the plan requires. For a detour over a different roadway or route, use the W20-2 DETOUR sign in advance.
- Direct at each decision point. Provide the temporary route and destination guidance needed for road users to make each turn or route choice without guessing.
- Continue guidance along the alternate route. Check that the route remains legible where it changes direction or might otherwise be ambiguous; use the signs selected in the approved plan.
- Show the return to the original route. Include the route guidance needed to reconnect with the road or route from which users were diverted.
- Plan separate accessible movement where needed. If pedestrian or bicycle movement is affected, define a usable alternate path and sign it for the affected users rather than assuming vehicle detour signs are enough.
Use sign dimensions that fit the roadway and purpose
Sign size depends on roadway context and sign function. The examples below are values in Table 6I-1 of the MUTCD 11th Edition Part 6 PDF from December 2023; they are not a substitute for checking the December 2025 Revision 1 text and the agency standard that governs the project. The table gives dimensions as width × height. Larger signs may be used when needed for legibility or emphasis.
| Sign | Conventional road | Freeway or expressway |
|---|---|---|
| M4-8P DETOUR plaque | 24 × 12 inches | 30 × 15 inches |
| M4-9 DETOUR | 30 × 24 inches | 48 × 36 inches |
| M4-9a Bike/Pedestrian Detour | 30 × 24 inches | Not stated in the cited December 2023 Table 6I-1 example |
| M4-9b Pedestrian Detour | 30 × 24 inches | Not stated in the cited December 2023 Table 6I-1 example |
| M4-10 Detour Arrow | 48 × 18 inches | Not stated in the cited December 2023 Table 6I-1 example |
These figures are specific table examples, not a recommendation to choose a size without considering visibility, placement, sign function, or the project’s standard. Verify each sign’s required dimensions and other specifications against the current adopted requirements before ordering.

Check the complete installation, not just the sign face
A correct legend on the wrong sign, at the wrong location, or on an unsuitable support can still fail to guide road users. Before installation, confirm that the proposed devices and placement match the approved plan and applicable standard.
- Identity and message: Check the sign code, wording, arrow, destination, and distance legend against the plan.
- Size and legibility: Verify the dimensions for the roadway context and whether the placement allows road users enough time to see and understand the message.
- Visibility: Check that the sign can be seen as intended at the approach and is not obscured by the site or other conditions.
- Support and placement: Confirm the planned support and location meet the project’s requirements and do not introduce an unapproved obstruction.
- Route continuity: Follow the full vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle routes to check for missing directions, unclear turns, or a missing return-to-route instruction.
- Jurisdictional acceptance: Resolve any mismatch between a product specification, the plan, and the current agency standard with the responsible authority before installation.
Why a generic sign list is not enough
Temporary warning and detour signs are standard TTC devices, but a generic product listing cannot establish that a sign’s code, dimensions, visibility, support, placement, or route is acceptable for a specific job. Those choices depend on the approved plan and the roadway conditions. The plan, current MUTCD text, and jurisdiction’s standard—not the fact that a sign is available for sale—determine what belongs on the site.
