The right plastic open storage bin depends on where it will sit, what it needs to hold, and how you want to reach those items. Compare the bin’s outside dimensions with your shelf or cabinet, then weigh open-front or open-top access, visibility, handles, and stacking. The examples below show different designs; manufacturer descriptions alone do not establish an overall best or a tested ranking.
Choose a bin style for the location
Open-front bins for quick access
An open-front bin lets you reach items without lifting a lid, which can suit frequently used supplies on a shelf. IRIS USA describes its Large Bin, 4 Pack, Clear (SKU 585577) as having a U-shaped open front for access. Each bin is listed at 13 × 6 × 5 inches.
Open crates for flexible spaces
Sterilite describes its Storage Crate for home, office, classroom, dorm, and utility spaces. Its open design has handles, and the manufacturer says crates can stack vertically or horizontally. Sterilite’s product description says, “The open design keeps frequently used items visible and accessible for everyday organization.” That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent performance assessment.
Shelf bins for closets and cabinets
Sterilite positions its Medium Shelf Bin (model 1362) for closets, pantries, cabinets, and open shelving. Its listed outside dimensions are 13 × 7 5/8 × 9 3/4 inches. The taller profile may work for different contents than a shallow open-front bin, provided the available shelf height and depth accommodate it.

Measure the space before choosing a size
Use the product’s outside dimensions—not just the usable interior—to check whether it will fit. Measure the shelf or cabinet’s width, depth, and usable height, and account for any lip, door, shelf support, or nearby obstruction that affects placement. For a stackable setup, also consider the total height of the stacked bins and whether you can still reach the contents comfortably.
For example, the IRIS bin is listed at 13 × 6 × 5 inches, while Sterilite’s Medium Shelf Bin measures 13 × 7 5/8 × 9 3/4 inches externally. Those figures help with fit checks, but the product pages do not establish interior capacity or a direct performance comparison.

Compare the features that affect daily use
- Opening: Choose an open front when items need to be reached from the shelf face; an open-top crate or shelf bin may suit items you access from above.
- Visibility: Clear plastic can make contents easier to see. Check the product description and images for the specific bin rather than assuming every open bin is transparent.
- Handles: Handles can help when a bin is carried between rooms or pulled from a shelf. Confirm their presence on the model you choose.
- Stacking: If you need to stack, look for a manufacturer-stated stacking configuration and consider whether the arrangement preserves convenient access.
- Contents: Match the opening and dimensions to the size and shape of the items. Small, frequently used supplies may benefit from a shallow open front; bulkier items may need a deeper or taller container.
The listed examples illustrate different features, not independently verified durability, load capacity, or ease of use. Treat manufacturer descriptions as product information rather than comparative test results.

Do not assume that a particular storage bin is recyclable through your local curbside program. The U.S. EPA’s Best Practices guidance notes that recycling depends on local collection and sorting constraints. Check your local program’s instructions for the specific item and material before putting it in a recycling bin.
