Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose pipe material by matching it to the fluid, governing rules, operating envelope, corrosion exposure, site conditions and required service life—not by looking for a single “best” material. A defensible choice compares the complete pipe system, including its wall or pressure class, coatings or lining, joints, fittings, installation method and repair plan. Final material and design details require project calculations under the applicable codes and product standards.
Start with the service and the rules that govern it
Oil, gas and water pipelines do not share one universal material specification. A pipe that is accepted for a particular water connection in one jurisdiction may not be approved for gas distribution, an oil production system or a different jurisdiction. Begin by identifying exactly what the pipeline carries, where it will operate, who owns or regulates it, and which standards and project specifications apply.

Separate the rules by purpose. Pipeline or system codes set design and operating requirements for a service and location. Product and manufacturing standards define the requirements for particular pipe, fittings or components. Owner specifications may add approved products, installation controls, inspection expectations or restrictions. A material appearing on a local list is not automatically suitable for every line, size, pressure or installation condition.
For example, ISO 21457:2010 addresses corrosion evaluation, material selection, performance limitations and corrosion control for oil and gas production systems through pipelines carrying stabilized products. ISO confirmed the standard as current following review in 2024. It excludes downhole components and does not supply detailed manufacturing and testing requirements; those belong to specific product and manufacturing standards. It is not a universal pipe product standard or a water-pipeline handbook.

The UK Health and Safety Executive’s process-pipework guidance emphasizes using applicable national and sector codes and checking allowable operating conditions. Abu Dhabi’s Department of Energy, in its 2024 water-supply guide, lists material options for certain service connections and requires distribution-company approval. These examples illustrate why the project’s own jurisdiction and asset-owner requirements must be checked rather than extrapolated to another network.
Define what the pipeline must withstand
Before comparing materials, document the conditions the pipe system will actually encounter. Normal operation is only part of the design case: foreseeable starts, stops, surges, process changes, abnormal temperatures and other upset conditions can determine whether a material or component is acceptable. The HSE guidance specifically highlights variation in process conditions under foreseeable upset conditions.
Pressure, temperature and transients
Record the operating and design pressure basis, temperature range and foreseeable pressure or temperature excursions. Confirm that the pipe, fittings, valves, joints and any liner are each within their allowable limits. A material family name alone does not establish a pressure rating: the product, dimensions, wall or pressure class, temperature and applicable standard all matter.
Temperature can change mechanical performance. The HSE notes that plastics can lose mechanical strength at elevated temperatures, while steels may be susceptible to brittle fracture at low temperatures. Therefore, a material that is suitable at routine temperature may not be acceptable at an upset or minimum design temperature. Pressure cycling and transient loads also need consideration under the relevant product and system design requirements.

Fluid composition and exposure
Describe the fluid rather than relying on a broad label such as “oil,” “gas” or “water.” Composition, contaminants, phases, treatment chemicals and expected changes affect chemical compatibility and corrosion or erosion exposure. The internal environment is only part of the assessment: soil, groundwater, marine exposure, stray currents, weather and other external conditions may affect the pipe and its protective system.
Assess the complete corrosion-control arrangement: pipe material, internal corrosion or erosion, external coatings, linings, corrosion allowance where applicable, cathodic protection where appropriate, joints, fittings, inspection and maintenance. Selecting a material described as corrosion-resistant does not remove the need to evaluate actual service conditions and interfaces. ISO 21457 frames selection in oil and gas production around corrosion evaluation and control rather than material choice in isolation.
Loads, route and connections
Burial depth, soil and traffic loads, support spacing, settlement, crossings, installation stresses and other site loads affect the required strength and stiffness. Check whether a proposed pipe’s dimensions and internal diameter work with existing infrastructure, hydraulic requirements, fittings, valves and repair components. The route and construction method can rule out an otherwise attractive candidate if its jointing, handling or installation controls cannot be achieved reliably on site.
Compare material families on the same project criteria
The table is a screening guide, not a ranking. The listed families appear in cited industry or utility sources, but their inclusion does not establish universal permission, a common pressure or temperature range, or interchangeability. Final qualification depends on the applicable jurisdiction, product specification, design conditions and complete system.

| HDPE thermoplastic liner | ADNOC’s specification addresses liners in defined onshore oil and water pipeline applications. | Carrier-pipe condition, application and fluid limits, reduced internal cross-section, liner and joint design, installation controls, and any operator approval required for restricted service. |
Steel: established use, with protection designed into the system
Steel is common in process and pipeline service, but it is not intrinsically corrosion-proof. The selection must account for pressure and temperature, toughness and corrosion exposure, as well as the coating, lining, corrosion allowance or cathodic-protection measures required by the project. The combination and details are service-specific; a general material label cannot substitute for a corrosion-control design.
Thermoplastics: qualify the product and the complete connection
Thermoplastics such as PE and HDPE are used in some distribution services and defined liner applications. Suitability depends on the particular resin and product standard as well as operating limits. Review the joints and mechanical fittings alongside the pipe, and include external loading, traceability and local regulator or owner approval in the decision. Historical evidence about older plastic systems should not be treated as a failure ranking for modern products: PHMSA’s pipeline-material page, last updated in 2017, is historical U.S. gas-distribution context, not a current cross-sector comparison.
PVC variants and ductile iron: distinguish specification from material name
Water Corporation’s specifications include PVC-U, PVC-M and PVC-O pressure pipe. That is evidence of use in its water-network context, not a blanket approval for every location or application. Pressure cycling and other design limits still need to be checked, and a specification for one variant should not be assumed to cover another.
Ductile iron also appears in utility contexts, including Abu Dhabi’s 2024 guide for a larger service-connection category. Confirm its pressure class, jointing, corrosion protection, local approval and compatibility with existing components. Neither that listing nor a utility specification makes it the default choice for other regions or services.

Use a project-specific selection process
A structured screening process helps explain why a material was chosen and makes gaps visible before procurement or construction. Record the evidence behind each decision; do not treat a shortlist or comparison score as a substitute for engineering calculations.
- Confirm service, route and authority. Identify the fluid and pipeline function, jurisdiction, regulator, asset owner and applicable system codes, product standards and owner specifications. Obtain the current approved-material requirements for that exact service and location.
- Write down operating and upset cases. Document design and operating pressure, temperature range, pressure cycling or surge cases, start-up and shutdown conditions, and foreseeable process changes. Check that pipe, joints, fittings, valves and any lining are all evaluated against the same cases.
- Characterize internal and external exposure. Gather available fluid-composition and treatment information, then assess internal corrosion or erosion and the external environment along the route. Identify whether coatings, linings, corrosion allowance, cathodic protection or monitoring are required.
- Establish structural and dimensional needs. Assess burial, traffic and other external loads, supports, crossings, settlement and installation stresses. Confirm internal diameter, size availability, pressure class and connections to existing systems.
- Screen material and product options. For each permitted candidate, check the particular product standard and limits—not just the material family. Compare joint type, workmanship controls, compatibility with fittings and valves, installation requirements and traceability.
- Plan installation, inspection and repair. Check that the construction team can execute the specified joints and protective systems under site conditions. Confirm inspection and maintenance access, repair components, spare availability and the practical method for future intervention.
- Compare whole-of-asset value and document the basis. Consider installed cost and the asset’s expected service-life performance, maintenance, repair and risk under the project’s documented assumptions. Have qualified engineers complete the design checks and record why the selected system meets the governing requirements.
Evaluate corrosion control as a system
Corrosion strategy is not a choice between “corrosion-resistant pipe” and “corrosion protection.” The material, fluid, soil or atmosphere, coatings, linings, joints, connected components and inspection approach interact. A coating may protect an external surface but does not establish internal compatibility; a liner may change the bore but does not prove the carrier pipe can safely withstand the line’s structural and operating loads.
For underground carbon-steel structures, HSE describes cathodic protection as widely used. Whether it is appropriate, how it is designed and how it is maintained depend on the application. The project should also consider coating condition, electrical continuity and interfaces where relevant, without assuming any one protective measure removes the need for the others.

Consider liners without confusing them with replacement pipe
A thermoplastic liner is a distinct system choice, not a general authorization to substitute plastic for a metallic pipeline. ADNOC’s AGES-SP-10-004 Rev. 1 specification covers HDPE liners for defined onshore oil and water pipeline applications. It identifies application limits and states that high-sour service is restricted unless specifically approved.
When evaluating a liner, assess the existing carrier pipe, the intended service, the liner’s pressure and temperature limits, installation and joint details, and the operator’s requirements. The liner can reduce internal cross-section, so account for the resulting bore change in the project’s hydraulic and operating assessment. A liner does not eliminate the need to verify the carrier pipe and the complete lined system against their respective limits.
Compare installed and whole-life value, not just purchase price
Initial pipe price is only one cost in a pipeline decision. Water Corporation’s Pipeline Selection Guidelines (copyright 2025) call attention to application fitness, size and supply constraints, installation context, compatibility and whole-of-asset performance. Those factors can change the practical value of a candidate even before maintenance and repair over the asset’s service life are considered.

Use a documented comparison that reflects the actual route and construction plan. Include material and component supply, handling, joining, installation controls, corrosion-protection work, inspection, maintenance, repairability and the consequences of service interruption or failure where the project can assess them. The comparison should use consistent assumptions for each candidate and identify uncertainty instead of disguising it as a precise ranking.
No general failure rate, service-life figure or lifecycle-cost ranking for steel, plastics and ductile iron across oil, gas and water applications is established by the cited sources. Any numerical comparison needs a defined pipe and product, service, location, period, operating conditions and source. PHMSA’s historical page concerns U.S. gas distribution and cannot support a broad comparison across these sectors.
What to have before making the final choice
A sound decision package gives reviewers enough information to check both the material and the system around it. Gather the items that apply to the project and flag any that remain unresolved:
- Fluid service, composition and treatment information, with operating and upset pressure and temperature cases.
- Jurisdiction, regulator, owner requirements, system code and applicable product or manufacturing standards.
- Route conditions, including burial, external loads, crossings, supports, installation access and connection to existing infrastructure.
- Candidate product details: size, internal diameter, wall or pressure class, joints, fittings, valves, traceability and supply availability.
- Internal and external corrosion or erosion assessment, plus the selected coating, lining, corrosion allowance or cathodic-protection measures where applicable.
- Installation, inspection, maintenance and repair plans, including availability of compatible components.
- A documented whole-of-asset comparison with assumptions, open questions and engineering approval.
When a local material list, owner specification or supplier product range is relevant, verify its current version and approval for the actual service, size and installation. A qualified pipe-system engineer should confirm the design and applicable code basis; the material comparison is one part of that design, not a standalone specification.
