Before traveling the Dukan–Chwarqurna route, check the latest Kurdistan Regional Government road-project announcements and contact traffic police to ask about conditions on your intended travel date. Construction progress reports do not confirm that a road section is open, and the listed traffic-police numbers are inquiry contacts—not a verified live road-status hotline.
Check for a current official update before you leave
Start with the Kurdistan Regional Government’s latest road-project announcements, including updates from the Ministry of Construction and Housing. Check the publication date and what the announcement actually says. A construction-progress report can describe work completed or underway without confirming whether the route is passable today.

The latest official project update identified for this article was published on 4 October 2026 by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Construction and Housing. It described construction as ongoing. That is useful background, but it is not a live traffic alert and does not establish that the road is open, closed, or clear for a particular departure.
When you review an announcement, separate three kinds of information: a description of construction, a target date for a future milestone, and a confirmed traffic restriction or opening. A statement that work is progressing belongs in the first category. It can help you understand why conditions may change, but it does not tell you whether vehicles can use a particular part of the route at the time you plan to travel. A target belongs in the second category, even if the stated date has passed. Only a current confirmation from an appropriate authority answers the immediate passability question.

Pay attention to the exact route and section named in the update. Project names may cover connected roads or more than one stretch. The Bestana–Khalakan–Dukan road project, for example, provides regional context, but its description does not establish the current operating status of every part of the Dukan–Chwarqurna route. Do not treat a broader project announcement as a route-wide status notice.
Call traffic police with a specific question
The official Kurdistan Region General Directorate of Traffic Police directory lists these contacts:
- General Directorate: 07729771000 and 07729770999
- Office hours shown in the directory: 08:30–15:00
- Suleimaniyah traffic entry: 053188 and [email protected]
The directory does not say that these numbers provide live road-status updates. Treat them as contacts for an inquiry, not as guaranteed real-time road-condition services. The numbers are useful places to ask, but their listing is not proof that a call will be answered immediately or that staff can confirm every route section.

The same applies if you leave a message or send an email and have not received a reply: no response is not a traffic-status update. Seek a current answer from an authority before relying on the route.
Ask about the date and the section you will travel
When you call or write, identify the Dukan–Chwarqurna route and your intended travel date. Ask whether there is a closure, incident, work-related restriction, or diversion affecting the section you plan to use, and when the information was last checked. If the answer covers only part of the route, ask about the remaining sections separately. A general statement about construction or the route as a whole may not resolve conditions at a specific point.
Keep the question narrow enough to get a useful answer. For example: “I plan to travel the Dukan–Chwarqurna route on [date]. Is the section I intend to use passable then, or is there a closure, work restriction, incident, or diversion? When was that status last confirmed?” If the response mentions only the project or says that work is underway, ask whether that means traffic is restricted now. Do not convert an answer about construction into an answer about access unless the authority makes that connection clearly.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
If staff describe a restriction, ask which section it affects and whether a diversion is officially in effect. If they describe only a portion of the road, ask whether the status of the remaining portion is known. Also distinguish a full closure from a work-related restriction: the source material does not establish that construction automatically means a road is closed, or that a completed section is automatically available to traffic.

A response about a particular stretch, time, or incident should not be stretched into a guarantee for the entire route or a later departure. If your travel date changes, or the answer is no longer current by the time you leave, ask again. The aim is not to infer a status from project descriptions but to obtain a time-relevant answer about the part you will use.
Interpret construction updates carefully
In its 4 October 2026 update, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Construction and Housing described the Dukan–Chwarqurna dual-carriageway project as 36 km long. It reported that the 11 km stretch from Hizop to Kani Watman was complete, intensive work was continuing on a 14 km Kani Watman–Khalakan sub-district road section, and work was underway on the left side and at Frizala Bridge.
The Ministry characterized the work with the statement: “An important phase in the construction of the (36 km) Dukan–Chwarqurna dual carriageway is underway and almost complete.” The words describe project progress. They do not, by themselves, say that the whole route is open or that there is a closure. Read the statement alongside the update date and seek a separate, current answer about access if you need to travel.
These figures describe reported project progress, not an itinerary or a live status map. In particular, a completed section does not prove that every approach, adjoining section, bridge, or lane is open to traffic at the time you travel. Likewise, active work does not by itself prove a full closure. Confirm the specific operating status with an authority before relying on either assumption.
Recommended Free Tools
The distinction matters because the update names different kinds of work and locations. A report that 11 km from Hizop to Kani Watman was complete is not a statement about all 36 km. A report of intensive work on a 14 km section is not, without more detail, a statement that the entire section is impassable. Work on the left side and at Frizala Bridge likewise identifies work areas, not the status of every lane or approach. Do not infer operational details that the announcement does not provide.

Do not treat an opening target as confirmation
Kurdistan24 reported on 14 June 2026 that a new phase had a preliminary mid-July opening target. On 23 July 2026, it reported that an additional 11 km was planned to open the following week. These were plans reported at those dates, not confirmation that the sections opened as scheduled or remain open now. Once a target date has passed, verify the actual status rather than assuming the milestone happened.
A planned opening and an actual traffic status are different pieces of information. A target may be preliminary, may refer to a particular phase, and may not describe the condition of adjoining sections. Even a report that a section was expected to open soon does not establish whether it opened, whether the opening was delayed, or whether a later restriction occurred. For a trip after the target date, ask for confirmation about the actual section and travel date rather than relying on the forecast.
The dates also matter when comparing reports. The June report’s preliminary mid-July target and the July report’s plan to open an additional 11 km the following week were published at different moments and describe plans as stated then. Neither is a current traffic alert. If an older report is the only information you can find, treat it as background and continue seeking confirmation rather than using it as proof of present access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep related project descriptions distinct
The Kurdistan Regional Government Department of Media and Information described the Bestana–Khalakan–Dukan road project as under construction on 7 June 2026. It said the project aimed to improve connectivity between Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Raparin Independent Administration, and Dukan District, and stated a budget of IQD 243 billion. This is useful regional project context, but it does not establish the current status of every section of the Dukan–Chwarqurna route.
The project name, stated objective, and budget explain the scale and purpose of a road-development effort; none is a substitute for a current closure notice. A large budget does not indicate how much work is complete, whether a section is open to traffic, or whether a diversion is active on your travel date. Keep these contextual facts separate from the operational question you need answered.
A practical pre-departure check
- Look for a fresh official announcement. Check the latest KRG road-project information available to you. Record its date and whether it describes construction progress, a planned opening, or an actual traffic restriction. Note the section named and whether the statement specifically addresses traffic access.
- Contact traffic police. Use the General Directorate numbers, or the Suleimaniyah contacts listed above, to make a route-specific inquiry. The directory lists office hours of 08:30–15:00 for the General Directorate. The directory does not guarantee that any contact provides live updates, so ask directly what information can be confirmed.
- State your travel date and route section. Ask about closures, incidents, work restrictions, and diversions affecting that part of the route, and ask how recently the information was confirmed. If the response covers only one section, ask about the others rather than assuming the same status applies throughout.
- Clarify what the answer means. A statement that construction is underway is not necessarily a closure notice; a statement that work is complete is not necessarily confirmation that all adjacent sections are open. Ask whether the authority is confirming passability for your intended section and date.
- Resolve uncertainty before departure. If an update is old, covers only construction progress, or does not answer whether your section is passable, seek confirmation from an authority. Do not rely on an expired opening target or infer current access from a completed-work figure.
- Recheck if your departure time changes. A status answer applies only as far as the authority confirms it; it should not be treated as a standing guarantee for a later trip. If you travel on a different date than the one you asked about, obtain an updated answer.
This process is deliberately conservative: it prevents project descriptions, old forecasts, and unanswered inquiries from being mistaken for current road conditions. Keep the source, date, and scope of each piece of information clear. If one source says a project is progressing and an authority gives a more specific current answer about a closure or diversion, distinguish the two rather than blending them into a single claim.

What is—and is not—established about live road status
The official project updates and traffic-police directory listings identified here do not establish a route-specific live closure or incident feed. They also do not verify the road’s condition for a future travel date. The reliable distinction is between project information, which describes construction and plans, and a current authority response about passability, a closure, or a diversion.

No verified alternate route options or current bypass instructions are established here. If traffic police report a closure, ask the relevant authority whether a diversion is in effect rather than choosing a detour based on an unverified suggestion. No travel time, bypass distance, or alternate-road condition can be responsibly compared without current information.
If you are comparing any information you find, use three basic checks: whether it confirms an actual closure or passability rather than construction progress; whether it covers the exact section you intend to travel; and when it was checked or published. A source that fails one of these checks may still provide useful context, but it should not be treated as a definitive answer to whether you can travel that section on your date.
Quick checklist before traveling
- Find the date and exact wording of the latest official KRG road announcement you can access.
- Separate completed work, active work, and opening plans from statements about traffic restrictions.
- Call the General Directorate at 07729771000 or 07729770999, or contact the Suleimaniyah traffic entry at 053188 or [email protected].
- Ask about your intended date and section, and whether any closure, incident, work restriction, or diversion applies.
- Ask when the status was last confirmed and whether it covers the full portion you plan to travel.
- If the answer is unavailable or ambiguous, do not treat silence or a construction update as proof that the route is open.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Dukan–Chwarqurna route open now?
The 4 October 2026 Kurdistan Regional Government update described construction progress, not live passability. It does not establish whether the route is open or closed today. Ask traffic police about the section and date you plan to travel.

Does the completed 11 km section mean the whole road is open?
No. The Ministry of Construction and Housing reported that the 11 km Hizop–Kani Watman stretch was complete, but that figure does not confirm access on the rest of the 36 km project, adjoining sections, approaches, or bridge areas.
Can I rely on the planned mid-July or following-week opening dates?
No. Kurdistan24 reported a preliminary mid-July target on 14 June 2026 and a plan to open an additional 11 km the following week on 23 July 2026. These were dated plans, not confirmation that the sections opened or remain open. Verify current status with an authority.
Is there a verified live closure feed for this route?
No route-specific live closure or incident feed is established by the official project updates and directory listings described here. Use those updates as background and ask an authority for current information.
What should I ask traffic police?
Give your intended travel date and the section of the Dukan–Chwarqurna route you plan to use. Ask whether there is a closure, incident, work restriction, or diversion, when the information was last confirmed, and whether the answer covers the full section you need.
The Bottom Line
Before traveling, check the date and scope of the latest Kurdistan Regional Government road update, then ask traffic police about passability, closures, incidents, and diversions for your specific section and travel date. The 4 October 2026 progress report and earlier opening targets are not live status confirmations, and the listed phone numbers are inquiry contacts rather than guaranteed road-status hotlines.
