Choose patio pavers as part of a complete pavement system, not as an isolated product. Start with pedestrian loading and the patio’s weather, soil, slope and runoff; then select either a conventional or permeable concrete-paver design, verify the base and joint materials, and choose a surface texture suited to wet conditions. A paver’s appearance alone cannot tell you whether the finished patio will drain well or remain secure underfoot.
The most defensible guidance available for this decision comes from the Concrete Masonry and Hardscape Association (CMHA) U.S. guides. Those documents provide concrete-paver design and construction guidance, but they do not establish a universal ranking of concrete, clay and natural-stone pavers or a guaranteed service life for every patio.

Begin with the patio’s actual job
A residential patio normally carries pedestrians, furniture and occasional concentrated loads from grills or planters. CMHA’s 2025 patio detail is a pedestrian and residential application. That does not mean every patio can use the same section: soil, runoff, climate and finished elevations still control the design.
Pedestrian use versus heavier loading
Tell the designer or installer how the space will be used. A walkway and seating area have different demands from a driveway, fire-truck access route or area that will support vehicles. CMHA’s 2025 Interlocking Concrete Pavement on an Aggregate Base guide covers both pedestrian and vehicular applications, but its specifications are intended to be tailored by a qualified design professional. Do not copy a vehicular section into a residential patio, or assume a patio section is suitable for vehicle loading, without project-specific advice.

Identify water sources before choosing a paver
Map the roof downspouts, nearby paving, retaining walls, irrigation and the direction water already travels during a storm. A patio that receives runoff from a roof or a large impervious area may need a thicker aggregate base, drain pipes or an outlet even when permeable pavers are used. CMHA’s permeable patio detail specifically warns that those additions may be required for adjacent impervious surfaces or roofs.
Choose the water-management system
There are two fundamentally different approaches. A conventional interlocking concrete-pavement system is built over a compacted aggregate base and is commonly graded to shed water to an inlet, edge or other drainage feature. A permeable interlocking concrete-pavement system uses permeable joints and open-graded stone layers so water can pass through the pavement and infiltrate the soil when site conditions allow. Neither approach removes the need for grading and an intentional outlet.
| System or detail | Layer and joint approach | How water is handled | Application described by CMHA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional interlocking concrete pavement | Concrete pavers and bedding sand over a compacted aggregate base | Surface slope and the project drainage layout direct water away from the patio | Pedestrian and vehicular applications in the 2025 U.S. guide specification |
| Permeable interlocking concrete pavement | Pavers with permeable joints over open-graded crushed-stone bedding, base and subbase | Water moves through the joints and stone and infiltrates the soil where its rate and depth are suitable | Permeable pavement guidance in the 2025 U.S. guide specification |
| Permeable patio with concrete curbs | Pavers, stone bedding and stone base in a pedestrian residential patio detail | Infiltration is supplemented by an outlet and perforated underdrains when soil infiltration is low or an impermeable liner is present | CMHA patio detail drawing |
When a permeable design makes sense
Permeable construction is a site decision, not simply a paver style. Ask for an assessment of the native soil’s infiltration, seasonal groundwater, slope, available storage depth and the location of a safe overflow outlet. CMHA’s 2025 permeable-pavement guide says low-infiltration soils or an impermeable liner may require some or all water to be routed to an outlet through perforated underdrains.
A permeable patio can still be designed with an underdrain. The pipe is not a universal accessory: it is a conditional component used when the soil or liner prevents adequate infiltration, or when the designer needs a controlled outlet. The outlet must discharge where it will not erode soil, flood a foundation or send water onto a neighboring property.
When conventional drainage is the better fit
Use a conventional system when the site cannot infiltrate water reliably, when groundwater is close to the proposed base, or when a local design requires direct collection. Grade the finished surface toward a planned drain, swale or edge outlet. A conventional patio still needs free-draining bedding and a stable base; simply placing pavers on concrete or soil does not create a durable drainage system.

Questions to have answered on the plan
- What is the measured or otherwise verified soil infiltration condition at the patio location?
- Where will stormwater go during a large event when the soil cannot accept it quickly enough?
- Will roof leaders, downspouts or uphill paving discharge onto the patio?
- Is an underdrain shown, and where does it connect?
- What finished elevations keep water away from the building and prevent ponding at doors?
Evaluate durability as a system
Durability comes from the interaction of the paver, bedding, base, subbase, joints, edge restraints, slope and construction quality. A thick or attractive paver cannot compensate for a poorly compacted base or an edge that allows the field to spread.
Paver and bedding
Request the paver’s product specification, thickness, dimensional tolerances, intended use and installation requirements. For a conventional system, CMHA’s 2025 guide describes bedding sand over a compacted aggregate base. For a permeable system, the bedding and aggregate are open-graded stone selected to preserve interconnected voids. Do not substitute ordinary sand or a dense aggregate in a permeable section unless the project specification allows it; doing so can block the designed water path.

Base and subbase thickness
Base thickness is determined by loading, soil support, climate, drainage and runoff entering the area. A patio receiving roof or uphill runoff may need a thicker base or drain pipes, as noted in CMHA’s patio detail. The correct thickness is therefore a design output, not a universal number that can be copied from a product brochure.
Joints and edge restraint
Joints transfer loads between adjacent pavers and help keep the surface aligned. In a permeable system, the joint aggregate must remain permeable. Edge restraints contain the pavement so the field does not creep outward under repeated use. Confirm that restraints are compatible with the base and are installed at the intended finished elevation.
Finished elevations and settlement control
The installer should establish the patio elevation relative to doors, steps, walls and the surrounding grade before excavation. The base must be placed and compacted in the specified lifts; placing all aggregate at once can leave weak zones that settle later. Check that the final surface has continuous slope to its intended drainage path and that no low pocket is trapped by an edge or curb.

Select a surface that remains secure when wet
Wet traction is not one property of a paver. CMHA’s 2020 bulletin on slip and skid resistance identifies surface condition and maintenance, slope and drainage, water and contaminants, footwear and the person traversing the surface as factors. Leaves, algae, grease, soil and standing water can change conditions even when the original paver texture is unchanged.

Texture versus polish
Textured concrete pavers generally provide more surface irregularity than a highly polished finish, but texture alone does not guarantee safety. A polished concrete paver may require project-specific testing; CMHA notes that most concrete pavers can meet agency or client recommendations while polished surfaces may need testing. If the patio will stay wet, lies on a noticeable slope, surrounds a pool or receives food grease, ask for wet-condition data relevant to the proposed finish.
Interpret test results correctly
Slip-resistance numbers allow surfaces or test conditions to be compared. They are not a personal prediction. CMHA states: “Like all slip resistance test methods, this one does not predict the likelihood of a person slipping.” Use a test result alongside the slope, drainage, contaminants, footwear and maintenance plan rather than treating a single value as a safety guarantee.
Control the conditions that make slipping more likely
- Provide enough slope and drainage to prevent persistent films of water.
- Keep leaves, algae, mud, oil and food residue off the surface.
- Use a finish appropriate to the expected wetness and avoid specifying a polished surface where wet traction is a primary concern unless testing supports it.
- Review transitions at steps, door thresholds and drains; abrupt level changes create trip hazards independent of paver texture.
- Plan lighting and handrails where the site’s layout or users warrant them.
Compare conventional and permeable construction details
The following checklist keeps the comparison focused on components that affect performance.
| Component | Conventional system check | Permeable system check |
|---|---|---|
| Paver | Product and thickness match the pedestrian or project loading | Paver geometry and joints are approved for permeable installation |
| Bedding | Specified bedding sand over the compacted base | Open-graded stone that maintains flow through the joints |
| Base and subbase | Compacted aggregate sized for soil, loading and drainage | Open-graded crushed stone sized for storage, flow and structural support |
| Joints | Joint material and filling method prevent movement and weed intrusion | Permeable joint stone remains open and is not sealed or clogged by incompatible material |
| Edges | Restraints contain the paver field and hold the finished line | Restraints preserve the designed water path and contain the open-graded layers |
| Drainage | Surface slope leads to the planned inlet, swale or outlet | Infiltration is verified; underdrain and overflow are provided where soil or liner conditions require them |
Use this selection process with an installer
- Describe the use. State that the project is a pedestrian residential patio, and identify any unusual concentrated loads, steps, pool exposure or outdoor kitchen equipment.
- Document the site. Mark doors, foundations, retaining walls, downspouts, uphill paving, existing drains, trees and property boundaries. Note where water ponds after rain.
- Choose the drainage concept. Decide whether the design will infiltrate through a permeable system or collect and convey water with a conventional system. Base that decision on soil and groundwater conditions.
- Set elevations and slope. Show the patio height at the building, edges, steps and drains. Confirm that water has a continuous route and that door thresholds remain protected.
- Review the section. Check the paver, bedding, base, subbase, joints and edge restraints against a project-specific specification. For permeable work, verify that all aggregate layers are open graded and that the joint stone is permeable.
- Resolve overflow. If infiltration is slow, a liner is present or runoff enters from a roof or adjacent pavement, require the plan to show the underdrain, pipe slope, cleanouts and outlet.
- Choose the finish. Select texture and color after drainage and structural details are settled. Request wet-condition testing for polished finishes or higher-risk locations.
- Write the maintenance plan. Specify sweeping, prompt removal of contaminants, weed control, joint inspection and any restrictions on sealers or deicing products.
Account for climate and maintenance
Ask how the proposed materials and section respond to local freeze-thaw cycles, deicers and cleaning practices. The cited CMHA material provides concrete-pavement guidance but does not rank every paving material for every climate. A local designer should select aggregate, joint material, edge details and cleaning methods that suit the region.

Freeze-thaw and deicers
Water trapped in a poorly drained base can worsen movement during freezing weather. The practical question is not whether a paver is advertised as “durable,” but whether the completed section drains, remains confined and can be repaired when individual units move. Ask which deicers are acceptable for the selected paver and whether runoff from salted areas will enter planting beds or a permeable base.
Cleaning and joint care
Regular sweeping removes abrasive grit and organic debris. Clean spills promptly, especially grease that can reduce wet traction. Inspect joints and edges after severe weather and repair localized movement before it spreads. In a permeable pavement, maintenance must preserve infiltration: avoid allowing sediment, soil or fine sweeping compounds to fill the joints, and follow the project specification for cleaning equipment and replacement joint stone.

Choosing by color or pattern first
Problem: The appearance is selected before runoff, soil and loading are understood.
Correction: Approve the pavement section and drainage route first, then choose the visual blend available for that specification.
Assuming permeable pavers eliminate drainage design
Problem: The patio is expected to absorb all roof or uphill runoff without an outlet.
Correction: Verify infiltration and show overflow and, when needed, perforated underdrains connected to a suitable outlet.

Three practical decision examples
Level yard with sandy, infiltrating soil
A small seating patio with no roof discharge may suit a permeable concrete-paver system if the soil, groundwater and storage depth are verified. The plan still needs finished elevations, an overflow route and open-graded stone layers. If testing shows that the soil cannot infiltrate the design storm, add an underdrain or use a conventional collection system.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Clay soil beside a foundation
Low-infiltration soil and foundation protection favor a design that controls water rather than assuming it will disappear below the patio. A conventional paver system graded to a drain may be appropriate, or a permeable section may be paired with an underdrain and positive outlet. Keep the finished elevation and discharge route away from the foundation.
Sloped patio near a pool or outdoor kitchen
Frequent wetness and contaminants make surface texture, slope and maintenance central. Avoid choosing a polished finish without relevant wet testing. Detail edge restraints, steps and drains carefully, and plan routine removal of oils, food residue, leaves and algae.
What to request in the written proposal
- A site-specific plan showing elevations, slopes, runoff sources and outlets.
- The paver product specification and intended pedestrian application.
- Layer descriptions for bedding, base, subbase and joints, including aggregate type for permeable work.
- Edge-restraint details and the proposed finished elevation at doors and steps.
- Underdrain, cleanout and overflow details when infiltration or roof runoff requires them.
- Any wet-traction testing proposed for polished or higher-risk surfaces, with the test method and conditions identified.
- Cleaning, joint-maintenance and deicer instructions for the selected system.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
CMHA’s 2025 interlocking-pavement and permeable-pavement guides, its permeable patio detail, the 2020 slip-and-skid bulletin and the 2022 application guide support a system-based selection process. They establish design principles for concrete pavers, aggregate layers, infiltration, underdrains and traction factors. They do not provide a single best paver for every climate, a universal slip-risk ranking, or a numeric service-life promise for every patio. Those outcomes depend on the specific product, site, design, construction and maintenance.
