Choose each lock and hinge for the door it will serve—not just for its appearance. Start with the door’s function and any safety or code obligations, check that the hardware fits the door and frame, then compare documented performance and finish. A bedroom privacy lock, an exterior deadbolt and a passage latch do different jobs; a hinge must also suit the door’s dimensions, weight and application.

BHMA standards summaries can help you understand the performance categories, but they are not a substitute for the full standard, product-specific installation requirements or local code review. No single size, grade or lock function is right for every renovation. Treat each opening as its own specification, even if several doors appear similar.

Start with the door’s job

Before looking at finishes or handles, list each door in the renovation and decide what it needs to do. A lock’s function must match how people use the door. A lock intended for privacy is not the same thing as a lock intended to secure an exterior entry, and a latch for a door that needs no locking function is different again.

  • Exterior entry: Identify the lock function required for the entry and whether a separate deadbolt is part of the plan. Check the door’s preparation and the selected products’ compatibility before ordering.
  • Interior passage: Decide whether the door needs a locking function at all. A door used for circulation may have different needs from a room where occupants expect privacy.
  • Privacy: Choose a privacy function for the intended room and make sure its operation is appropriate for the door’s use. BHMA’s residential lockset summary gives F77A as an example of a patio or privacy lock with a push-button or other inside locking device. The summary cautions against using that function on a room with no other entrance.
  • Regulated or special-use door: If the door is subject to fire-protection, egress or accessibility requirements, establish those constraints before choosing hardware. They may take precedence over appearance or convenience.

Write down the function for every door rather than ordering one lock type for the whole house. If a room has only one door, treat the privacy-lock warning as a reason to verify the intended function and applicable requirements—not as permission to assume that any particular product is suitable. Likewise, do not assume an exterior lockset and a deadbolt are interchangeable: they are distinct hardware categories and should be checked separately.

This first decision narrows the product search. It also prevents a common renovation mix-up: choosing a visually coordinated set first and discovering later that a particular opening needs a different function, operation or compliance review. A simple schedule can start with door name, location and job, then add the lock and hinge details once the opening has been assessed.

Check the door and frame before selecting a finish

Hardware that looks right can still be incompatible with the existing door preparation, door thickness, frame or hinge locations. Measure and record the conditions at the actual opening before buying. Renovations often involve existing doors or frames, so do not assume a product will fit because it is described as residential or because another door in the home uses similar-looking hardware.

Record the lock preparation

For a lock or latch, record the existing bore and backset where relevant, the door thickness and the handing. Compare those measurements with the specific product’s installation requirements. If you are changing the lock function or replacing hardware with a different configuration, confirm that the door preparation supports the new product; a standards grade does not establish fit.

Keep the measurements associated with the correct door. Similar-looking openings can have different preparations, and a product that fits one does not establish that it fits another. The useful comparison is between the actual opening and the selected model’s requirements, not between a generic product category and the house as a whole.

Record the hinge and frame conditions

For hinges, record the existing hinge size and locations, the door dimensions and weight if known, and the condition of the frame and attachment points. Compare the actual application with the hinge manufacturer’s specified dimensions and suitability. A hinge standard addresses dimensional and performance requirements, but it cannot tell you whether a particular hinge is right for an unspecified door and frame.

Use product-specific information, not a presumed universal size

The BHMA summaries establish standards and categories; they do not establish universal residential dimensions. Confirm the selected model’s fitting and installation requirements, including any stated door-thickness range or preparation details, before ordering. If the opening, handing or preparation is uncertain, resolve that uncertainty before buying a full set of hardware. This is especially important when several doors appear similar but may have different existing preparations.

Standards information and fit information answer different questions. A performance category describes criteria a product is evaluated against; measurements and installation instructions determine whether the particular product can be installed at a particular opening. Neither should be used as a substitute for the other.

Compare locksets by function and documented performance

Residential locksets should be assessed by their intended function and by evidence for the particular product—not by appearance or broad marketing language alone. BHMA’s A156.39-2025 summary says the residential lockset standard establishes requirements for durability, security and finish. These are distinct considerations, so a useful comparison checks each one rather than treating a single label as proof that every priority is covered.

What to compare What to verify Why it matters
Function That the lockset’s function matches the door’s intended use. A privacy function and an exterior-entry function serve different purposes.
Fit Door preparation, bore and backset where relevant, door thickness, handing and product installation requirements. Performance claims do not establish compatibility with the opening.
Security The product’s documented security grade or other verifiable product-specific evidence. Style and marketing descriptions alone do not establish security performance.
Durability The product’s documented durability grade or applicable evidence. Expected use and the need for sustained operation are separate from appearance.
Finish Documented finish grade or performance information, plus the finish that suits the project. Finish performance is one of the residential lockset performance categories.
Accessibility and regulated use Whether the opening has accessibility, egress or fire-protection requirements. Requirements for the application can constrain the choice.

Understand the residential grade approach

Schlage’s consumer explanation describes the current residential grade approach as separately grading Security, Durability and Finish. In that explanation, A is best in an individual category and AAA is best across all three. Read a grade in context: a grade helps compare the listed performance categories, but it does not by itself tell you whether the product has the right function, fits the door, or meets a project-specific code requirement.

When comparing products, check which category the grade refers to and whether the specific model and function are covered by the evidence presented. Do not infer that a product is certified merely because a retailer uses a grade-like description. Verify the product listing or documentation if certification is important to the project.

Use the grade to clarify trade-offs rather than to make a decision automatically. For example, if finish performance matters because the hardware will be used frequently or is exposed to project conditions, review that category rather than assuming a security rating also describes finish. Similarly, a high durability grade does not establish that the lock is an appropriate function for the opening. These are separate checks, just as fit and code review are separate from performance.

BHMA’s A156.39-2025 summary is an orientation to the standard’s scope, not the full paid standard text. If a project specification requires particular evidence, check the actual product documentation and the applicable requirement. A short summary can help you frame questions to a supplier or qualified professional, but it cannot verify a particular model by itself.

Choose a deadbolt as its own product category

Residential deadbolts are treated as a separate category from residential locksets in BHMA’s standards materials. Evaluate the deadbolt’s intended use, compatibility with the door and operation, and evidence against the relevant standard or certification. Do not assume that a lockset’s grade or description automatically establishes the deadbolt’s performance.

BHMA’s A156.40 summary states that Grade A residential deadbolts must pass a test requiring 400,000 opening-and-closing cycles. The source document shows 2020 as its year. This is a standards test requirement, not a forecast that a deadbolt will last for 400,000 everyday cycles in a particular home. Actual service life depends on conditions not established by that test figure alone.

For any candidate deadbolt, confirm the specific product’s fit, intended operation and documented status. A standard category or cycle-test requirement is useful context, but neither resolves whether the product suits a particular door or complies with local rules. When making a comparison, keep the questions distinct: Is it the correct product category? Does the model fit the door? Is the claimed grade or certification documented? Does the opening have additional requirements?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 400,000-cycle figure is useful because it describes a pass requirement for a specific grade under the standard, not because it translates directly to years of household use. Avoid turning it into a lifespan promise or comparing it with a different product category as if the tests were identical.

Select hinges for the door, not just the hardware set

Hinges are structural hardware: they support the door and must suit its dimensions, weight, frame and application. Their appearance matters, but it should come after suitability. BHMA’s A156.1-2025 summary says the hinge standard covers cycle, lateral and vertical wear, friction, strength, finish, material and dimensional requirements. It describes Grade 1 as heavy duty and other grades as standard or light weight.

Use those categories as a comparison framework, then verify the particular hinge against the actual door and frame. The grade alone does not establish that a hinge has the right dimensions, material, finish or suitability for an individual opening. A stronger-sounding grade is not a substitute for checking the door’s dimensions and weight or the product’s stated application.

Check dimensions and application

  • Record the hinge size and locations already used at the opening.
  • Confirm the proposed hinge’s dimensions and installation requirements.
  • Check suitability for the door’s size, weight, frame and environment using the product’s documentation.
  • Confirm that the material and finish suit the project conditions and the finish scheme.
  • Make sure the hinge configuration works with the door and frame rather than relying on appearance as a proxy for compatibility.

The available standards summary does not supply a universal residential hinge size or a general weight limit for every grade. Those values must come from the particular hinge’s documentation and the project conditions. If the door’s weight or frame condition is unknown, do not treat a generic grade label as a substitute for checking suitability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The standard’s list of criteria is a reminder that hinge selection is broader than matching a finish. Cycle, wear, friction and strength relate to performance; material and finish are additional considerations; dimensional requirements matter for installation. Compare the information the product actually provides with the needs of the opening, and ask for clarification if the specified use or dimensions are unclear.

Consider non-removable pins where relevant

BHMA’s hinge summary notes that hinges may include non-removable pins to help prevent unauthorized door removal. This is one security feature, not a universal requirement or a complete security solution. Whether it is appropriate depends on the door configuration and the project’s needs. Check the specific hinge design and confirm that it suits the opening before specifying it.

Do not treat the feature as an automatic upgrade for every door. First determine whether the door configuration calls for this feature, then check that the chosen hinge’s installation requirements and dimensions match the opening. A security feature cannot compensate for an unsuitable hinge or unresolved frame conditions.

Resolve safety and code constraints before ordering

Accessibility, egress, fire protection and local code can affect which hardware is permitted or appropriate. The requirements depend on the door and the project’s jurisdiction; a general consumer guide cannot determine compliance without those details. BHMA’s standards materials discuss these subjects, but a summary does not replace the full standard or the applicable code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify regulated openings. Determine whether any door is part of a fire-protection arrangement, an egress route or an accessible route.
  2. Establish the applicable requirements. Check the rules for the project’s jurisdiction and the specific door type. Do not assume that residential use alone answers the question.
  3. Verify the product and opening together. Check any required listing, hardware function and operating characteristics against the project requirements.
  4. Get qualified review when needed. Ask the local authority or a qualified professional to confirm the requirements before specifying hardware if compliance is uncertain.

Do not treat a hardware grade, product description or standards summary as proof of local code compliance. For a fire door or other regulated opening, the applicable requirements and product listing need to be checked for that actual installation.

Make this review early enough to affect the specification. If the opening is regulated, choosing a style and ordering first can leave fewer suitable options later. The relevant requirements are tied to the actual jurisdiction and door type, so avoid relying on a rule of thumb or assuming that a product suitable for an ordinary interior door is suitable for every opening.

Use a consistent decision process for every opening

A door-by-door schedule helps prevent function, fit and safety needs from getting lost among finish choices. Keep the lock and hinge decisions connected to the same opening, but evaluate each component on the criteria that apply to it.

  1. Name the door and its use. Record whether it is an exterior entry, passage door, privacy door or an opening with special requirements.
  2. Choose the required lock function. Decide whether the door needs passage, privacy or entry hardware, and whether a separate deadbolt is part of the specification.
  3. Document the opening. Measure the relevant lock preparation and record door thickness, handing, hinge dimensions and frame condition.
  4. Shortlist compatible products. Compare each candidate’s installation requirements with the measured opening before considering finish.
  5. Compare performance evidence. For locksets, evaluate security, durability and finish separately. For deadbolts and hinges, check the relevant category and product-specific documentation.
  6. Check safety and code. Confirm accessibility, egress, fire-protection and local requirements for any applicable door.
  7. Finalize the finish and order. Select finishes after function, compatibility and required performance have been addressed, and retain the product documentation for installation and verification.

A useful schedule can record the door identifier, intended use, lock function, product and model, relevant fit measurements, documented grade or standard, finish, hinge dimensions and any compliance review needed. Recording these details makes it easier to compare alternatives without confusing a finish choice with a performance or fit decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When reviewing alternatives, compare like with like. A privacy lockset should be assessed against the function required for that door, while a deadbolt should be checked as a deadbolt product. For hinges, compare the dimensions and suitability for the door and frame as well as grade and material. A list that records each criterion separately helps reveal when one candidate has strong documentation in one area but unanswered fit or compliance questions in another.

Common selection mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by appearance first: A matching finish does not prove that a lock has the right function or that a hinge suits the door.
  • Using one lock function everywhere: Different doors have different purposes; a privacy lock is not interchangeable with an exterior-entry lock.
  • Assuming a grade guarantees fit: Security, durability or hinge-grade information does not establish bore, backset, thickness, handing or hinge dimensions.
  • Reading a test number as a lifespan promise: The 400,000-cycle Grade A deadbolt figure is a test requirement, not a prediction of service life in a home.
  • Treating a standard summary as the full rule: Summaries help orient a comparison but do not replace full standards, product-specific checks or local code.
  • Assuming compliance from a product label: For fire, accessibility or egress requirements, verify the actual opening, product and jurisdiction-specific rules.
  • Ordering before checking the existing preparation: Measure the door and frame and compare them with the exact model requirements before purchase.
  • Applying one hinge grade as a universal answer: Grade descriptions do not supply every product’s dimensions, weight suitability or installation details.
  • Assuming a separate deadbolt inherits the lockset’s evidence: Residential deadbolts are a separate standards category, so check their own product information.
  • Treating a non-removable pin as a complete security solution: It is a possible hinge feature for particular applications, not a replacement for evaluating the whole opening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same lock function on every door?

Not by default. Match the function to the door’s job: passage, privacy and exterior-entry needs differ. BHMA’s residential lockset summary cautions against using its example F77A patio or privacy function on a room without another entrance, so verify the intended use and applicable requirements for that opening.

Does a higher residential lock grade guarantee that the lock fits my door?

No. The grade describes performance categories; it does not establish compatibility with the door preparation, bore, backset, thickness or handing. Compare the actual opening with the specific product’s installation requirements.

What does the 400,000-cycle Grade A deadbolt figure mean?

BHMA’s A156.40 summary states that Grade A residential deadbolts must pass a test requiring 400,000 opening-and-closing cycles. It is a test requirement, not a promise of how long the deadbolt will last in a particular home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I choose a hinge grade?

BHMA’s A156.1-2025 summary describes Grade 1 as heavy duty and other grades as standard or light weight. Use that as a comparison point, then verify the specific hinge’s dimensions, material, finish and suitability for the door’s size, weight, frame and application.

Do non-removable-pin hinges belong on every exterior door?

Not necessarily. BHMA notes that hinges may include non-removable pins to help prevent unauthorized door removal, but whether the feature is appropriate depends on the door configuration and project needs. Check the specific hinge design and installation requirements.

Can a BHMA summary confirm that hardware meets local code?

No. Summaries help explain standards categories, but they do not replace the full standard, product-specific verification or jurisdiction-specific code review. Check requirements for the door type and location, and consult the local authority or a qualified professional when needed.

The Bottom Line

For each opening, decide the door’s function first, measure the door and frame, then compare product-specific performance and installation information. Treat locksets, deadbolts and hinges as distinct categories, and resolve accessibility, egress, fire-protection and local code requirements before ordering. Finish comes last: the right-looking hardware still has to fit and suit the door.
