Then qualify the actual source, control its grading and moisture, and prove the proposed mixture with trial batches and concrete tests. An aggregate that meets ASTM C330/C330M-23 is a sound starting point for structural lightweight concrete, but aggregate compliance alone does not prove that the finished mixture will meet a project’s design requirements.
What “lightweight aggregate” means in this decision
Lightweight aggregate is a low-density mineral aggregate used to reduce the unit weight of concrete. This article addresses structural lightweight-aggregate concrete, where reducing density must be balanced against specified strength and durability. Lightweight fill, insulating aggregate, horticultural products, fire-protection systems, and other specialty uses can have different acceptance criteria; do not apply the structural selection process to those applications without checking the governing specification.

The useful comparison is not the weight of an individual particle. It is the performance of concrete made with a particular source, grading, moisture condition, cementitious system, and production process. Two aggregates with similar labels can produce different fresh density, water demand, pumpability, shrinkage, and hardened strength.

Write the requirements down before asking suppliers for samples. The design team and concrete producer need the same target, or a source can appear suitable while the finished concrete is not.

| Requirement to define | Questions to answer | Why it controls aggregate selection |
|---|---|---|
| Use and structural role | Is the concrete structural, partially structural, or nonstructural? Which members and load paths depend on it? | Structural work generally requires a qualified structural lightweight aggregate and mixture verification rather than a generic low-density product. |
| Hardened density | What density or unit-weight limit is specified, and at what age and test condition? | Aggregate density, absorbed moisture, air content, and mixture proportions all affect the result. |
| Compressive strength | What specified strength, test age, and acceptance rule apply? | Reducing density can affect strength; the selected source must work in the complete mixture. |
| Exposure | Will the concrete face freezing and thawing, abrasion, deicing salts, wetting and drying, or other aggressive conditions? | Durability evidence and project criteria may rule out a source that otherwise meets density and strength goals. |
| Fresh-concrete behavior | Must the concrete be pumped, placed through congested reinforcement, slipformed, or finished to a particular texture? | Absorption, grading, particle shape, and moisture condition affect slump retention, pressure, segregation, and finishing. |
| Construction constraints | What delivery distance, stockpile space, weather, batching equipment, and curing regime are expected? | A source that cannot be conditioned and delivered consistently is not a practical choice. |
For bridge decks, elevated slabs, precast members, and other structural work, establish both a density target and a strength target. Do not accept a lower density as a substitute for required strength, or a higher strength as permission to exceed a specified density, unless the engineer of record revises the design.
Use ASTM C330/C330M-23 as the structural aggregate baseline
ASTM C330/C330M-23 covers lightweight aggregates intended for structural concrete where the primary objectives are reducing density while maintaining compressive strength. Ask the supplier for current documentation showing that the proposed aggregate type and source are qualified to the edition adopted by the project.
That qualification is a baseline, not a finished-concrete guarantee. ASTM’s listing notes that its procedures are not intended to serve as job-control testing, and special-purpose applications can require different criteria. The project specification, adopted building code, contract documents, and engineering judgment still govern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Request source-specific reports rather than a generic statement that a product is “structural grade.” Depending on the applicable specification, the evidence can include:
- Gradation and sieve results for the delivered size or blend.
- Loose or dry-loose bulk density (unit weight) and the history of that value.
- Strength-related concrete results using the proposed aggregate.
- Drying-shrinkage data.
- Checks for organic impurities, staining, loss on ignition, clay lumps, and friable particles.
- Evidence concerning popouts, freeze-thaw resistance, soundness, abrasion, or other durability properties required by the project.
Ask when each report was produced, which quarry or plant it represents, and whether the material has changed. A report from a different source, size fraction, or production line is not equivalent evidence.
Compare local sources on the properties that change the mixture
When more than one source is available, compare the complete data package. The following framework keeps the decision tied to measurable project outcomes.
| Comparison axis | Request or measure | Decision significance |
|---|---|---|
| Standard qualification | Current ASTM C330/C330M documentation for the exact aggregate source and type. | Provides a relevant structural qualification baseline; it does not replace trial-mixture qualification. |
| Gradation and unit weight | Recent sieve/gradation reports, loose or dry-loose unit weight, and records showing variation over time. | Changes can alter paste demand, yield, fresh density, and the proportions needed to reach strength. |
| Concrete strength and density | Trial-mixture results at the specified compressive strength and density, tested on the project’s required basis. | Shows whether the actual concrete, not just the aggregate, meets the design outcome. |
| Absorption and moisture | Source-specific 24-hour absorption, recommended prewetting level, stockpile-moisture controls, and batching corrections. | Absorbed and surface moisture affect effective water, slump, hydration, pumpability, and fresh density. |
| Durability | Results relevant to freezing and thawing, abrasion, soundness, shrinkage, popouts, and the stated exposure. | Durability requirements depend on the exposure and governing specification; density alone is not a durability qualification. |
| Supply and placement | Available quantities, delivery reliability, transport conditions, pumping experience, and moisture-conditioning capability. | A technically suitable source can fail if it cannot be conditioned or placed consistently. |
Gradation and unit-weight consistency
Lightweight aggregate gradation controls packing, paste demand, finishing behavior, and segregation risk. Unit-weight variation changes the amount of aggregate occupying a batch volume and can move the concrete away from its intended density. Ask for a trend, not one favorable test, and identify the allowable variation in the project quality plan.

Precast quality-control guidance from the National Precast Concrete Association (19th-edition revision dated February 2, 2026) calls for lightweight-aggregate gradation and unit-weight testing initially and for each 200 cubic yards (150 cubic meters) supplied, or once a month, whichever occurs first, in its stated precast context. Treat that interval as guidance for that context, not as a universal job specification; the contract may require more frequent checks.
Strength, shrinkage, and durability evidence
Do not infer concrete strength from the aggregate’s particle strength or from a supplier’s label. Require trial batches using the proposed cementitious materials, admixtures, water, aggregate grading, and moisture condition. Review drying shrinkage and durability data when those properties are specified, especially for thin members, restrained elements, bridge work, exterior exposure, and precast products.
Control absorption and prewetting before production
Lightweight aggregate is often porous. Absorption differs by source, so a single industry number cannot be used to set batch water for every material. NRMCA CIP-36, hosted by the Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute, describes a typical lightweight-aggregate absorption range of 5% to 20% by weight of dry aggregate. That is a broad, source-dependent range, not a universal design value.
Use 24-hour absorption as the reference
The Federal Highway Administration’s Lightweight Concrete Bridge Design Primer (November 2021) states that the specified level of absorption achieved by prewetting should be expressed relative to 24-hour absorption because absorption varies between sources. Obtain the actual 24-hour value for the aggregate you will receive, then agree with the producer on the target absorbed-moisture condition for the mixture.
Set a repeatable moisture procedure
- Characterize the source. Record 24-hour absorption, current stockpile moisture, and the test method used by the laboratory or supplier.
- Define the target condition. State the intended percentage of 24-hour absorption or other project-approved condition, rather than saying only “prewetted.”
- Condition the stockpile. Wet the aggregate long enough and uniformly enough to approach the agreed condition. Avoid a wet surface with a dry core.
- Measure at batching. Check moisture during production and adjust batch water so the effective water-cementitious-material ratio remains controlled.
- Recheck after weather changes. Rain, evaporation, freezing temperatures, and stockpile turnover can change the condition before the next load.
- Document exceptions. Record any load or stockpile that falls outside the agreed range and obtain the producer’s disposition before placement.
Prewetting is particularly important for pumped concrete. The FHWA guidance emphasizes maintaining a consistent absorbed-moisture condition through the stockpile and consulting the supplier. Aggregate that draws water from the paste during pumping can reduce slump and increase pressure; aggregate carrying excessive free surface water can raise effective water and alter density.
Cold-weather limitations
Cold-weather storage can constrain prewetting. Water in pores or around the stockpile can freeze, and a producer may not have enough heated space or turnover to condition the material safely. Confirm winter procedures, protection from freezing, and the time required to bring aggregate to the agreed moisture state before approving a source.
Prove the mixture with trial batches
The producer and design team should qualify the complete mixture before committing to a source. Use the actual aggregate grading and moisture condition, not a laboratory substitute that is easier to handle.

- Prepare a trial design. Set cementitious materials, water, admixtures, aggregate proportions, air content, and the density and strength targets required by the project.
- Measure fresh properties. Check slump or slump flow, temperature, air content, fresh density, yield, and any project-specific pumpability or finishing behavior.
- Cast strength specimens. Test compressive strength at the specified age and under the required curing and acceptance procedure.
- Measure hardened density correctly. Use the test method and condition named in the specification. Fresh density is not a substitute for the specified hardened-density result.
- Assess durability and deformation. Run required freeze-thaw, abrasion, shrinkage, soundness, or other tests, or submit current source-specific evidence accepted by the engineer.
- Repeat when the source or process changes. A new grading, plant, cementitious material, admixture, moisture condition, or placement method can require requalification.
Understand fresh versus hardened density
Fresh density depends on mixture proportions, air content, water demand, aggregate density, and aggregate moisture. It can therefore differ from the hardened value used for design. Agree on sampling locations, test timing, and correction procedures before production so that a truck is not rejected using an unrelated density basis.

Be cautious with equilibrium-density figures
An ASTM C567/C567M-11 historical-edition page states that equilibrium density is approached in about 90 days for most structural lightweight concretes and about 180 days for most high-strength lightweight concretes. The same page reports equilibrium density as approximately 50 kg/m³ (3.0 lb/ft³) above oven-dry density despite initial variation in aggregate moisture. The page identifies a later edition as active, so these historical figures should not be copied into a current specification without checking the current ASTM edition and the project’s required test condition.
Decide between two candidate aggregates
Use a weighted decision record when two sources both appear to qualify. Give performance requirements the greatest weight, then eliminate any source that fails a mandatory criterion.
| Decision stage | Pass condition | Action if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Structural qualification | Current documentation for the exact source and intended use. | Do not treat the source as qualified until the supplier resolves the gap. |
| Density-strength trial | Concrete reaches specified hardened density and compressive strength on the project basis. | Revise the mixture or reject the source; do not rely on the aggregate certificate alone. |
| Moisture control | Supplier can achieve and measure the agreed absorbed-moisture condition through production. | Require a corrective process or choose a source with more reliable conditioning. |
| Durability | Evidence meets the exposure-specific criteria. | Reject for that exposure unless the engineer approves a documented alternative. |
| Consistency | Gradation and unit weight remain within the project’s control limits. | Increase testing, adjust the mixture, or change source. |
| Placement and supply | Material is available in the required volume and performs during transport, pumping, placement, and finishing. | Run a representative placement trial or select another source. |
The “best” aggregate is therefore project-specific. A source with the lowest particle density is not automatically best if it cannot deliver the required strength, moisture consistency, durability, or pumping behavior.

A qualified testing laboratory can verify gradation, unit weight, absorption, moisture, fresh density, hardened density, strength, and required durability properties. A sieve set can support routine gradation checks, but field screening does not replace testing by the responsible laboratory or supplier.

Bottom line
Select lightweight aggregate as part of a qualified concrete system, not as a standalone low-density product. Screen the source to ASTM C330/C330M-23, compare grading, unit weight, absorption, durability, and supply consistency, control prewetting against source-specific 24-hour absorption, and accept the material only after trial concrete demonstrates the project’s density, strength, and placement requirements.
