Choose large-format tile by confirming that the exact product is approved for your intended floor or wall, then make sure the surface, setting materials and installation plan meet the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable ANSI and TCNA guidance. Size and appearance matter, but neither proves that a tile is suitable for a particular use or that a project is ready to install it.
Start with the intended use: floor, wall or both
Check the product data sheet for the exact tile you plan to buy and confirm that the manufacturer lists it for the intended application. Do not infer suitability from a tile’s appearance, dimensions or the fact that another product in the same collection is used on floors or walls. Color, thickness, backing and format can differ between products.

This check is especially important for gauged porcelain tile and panels. ANSI A137.3 addresses physical properties and grading, with criteria that vary by use and thickness category. The relevant specification is the one for the particular product—not a general claim about porcelain or the collection as a whole.

When comparing products, keep the selection specific. A product page for a collection may show several colors, sizes, thicknesses or backing options. If the exact variant you intend to order is not clearly identified in the technical information, ask the manufacturer or installer to verify it. Resolve that question before purchase rather than relying on an image, showroom display or a description for a related format.
Can large-format tile go on walls?
Some products are specified for walls, but large dimensions alone do not establish that a particular tile is appropriate there. Confirm the manufacturer’s listed use and installation instructions for the exact format and thickness. If the product information is unclear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer to verify the application before ordering.
The same principle applies when the tile is intended for a floor: do not assume that a wall-listed product is also a floor product. The criteria for gauged porcelain products vary by use and thickness category, so “porcelain,” “large format” or “part of a floor-and-wall collection” is not enough detail to settle the question. Look for the actual product documentation and the application it names.
What counts as a gauged panel or slab?
The cited ANSI description defines gauged porcelain panels or slabs as products with an area of one square meter or larger. It also covers particular thickness ranges and product criteria. That definition helps distinguish panels from other large tiles, but it does not tell you which product is right for your room. Check the product data sheet for its actual dimensions, thickness, grading and approved uses.
In practical terms, do not use a label as a substitute for the measurements and instructions. A large tile and a gauged panel may both be described as large format, yet the handling and installation plan needs to match the actual product. Confirm the size and thickness that will be delivered, especially if you are comparing a panel or slab with a smaller tile in the same collection.
Compare size, thickness and appearance in the room
Large-format tile ranges from large individual tiles to gauged panels and slabs. Compare the actual dimensions and thickness of the candidates rather than relying on the label “large format.” A panel may have different handling and installation demands from a tile that is large relative to standard formats, and the product information is the place to verify what you are considering.
- Size and layout: Consider how the tile’s scale works in the room and how the planned layout will meet edges, transitions and other fixed features. Have the proposed layout reviewed before committing to the format.
- Surface and finish: Compare the finish and the product’s documented characteristics for the intended application. The technical references cited here do not establish a universally best finish.
- Color, pattern and variation: Review samples and the manufacturer’s product information. The selected technical sources do not rank aesthetic choices or establish that one pattern or degree of variation is best.
- Thickness and backing: Verify the exact product details. Do not assume that another thickness, backing or color in the same collection has the same use or installation requirements.
A useful comparison starts with eligibility, then moves to design. Remove any option that is not documented for the intended use. For the remaining choices, compare actual dimensions, thickness and product details, and consider how the pattern, finish and variation look at the scale planned for the room. This keeps appearance decisions from obscuring a product-use mismatch.

Use samples to judge the tile’s appearance at the intended scale, and use product documentation—not appearance—to confirm suitability. A small sample can help with color and pattern comparisons, but it cannot establish the product’s approved use or tell you whether the installation conditions are ready. If the choice depends on a technical detail that is missing from the listing, obtain clarification before purchase.

Ask for the proposed layout to be considered along with the selected size. The layout affects how the tile meets edges and transitions, and the installer should understand the planned design before confirming preparation and installation details. This is not a reason to reject a format based on appearance alone; it is a practical way to expose questions that need answers before material is ordered.
Check the room and installation plan before ordering
Large-format tile makes substrate preparation and lippage control especially important. An irregular surface can make unevenness more apparent, and the installation approach needs to account for the exact tile. Ask how the installer will assess and prepare the substrate, and what installation requirements will govern the work.
Do this review before committing to a format. A tile is not ready to install simply because it has been selected or delivered. The substrate, the product’s instructions and the planned materials all need to be considered together. If the installer has not yet assessed the surface, ask when and how that assessment will happen and what preparation may be needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSuccessful large-format installation depends on appropriate substrate preparation and correct mortar selection, according to TCNA’s technical discussion of the subject. The tile maker’s directions also matter. The preparation and material choices should be determined for the exact tile and project rather than selected from a generic rule about all large tiles.
Questions to ask the installer
- How will you check the substrate before installation, and what preparation does it need for this tile?
- Which manufacturer instructions and current ANSI or TCNA guidance apply to this product and location?
- How will the tile be handled, cut and laid out for the planned design?
- Which setting materials will you use, and how will you determine the appropriate mortar and contact for this product?
- How will you control lippage, and what role—if any—will a lippage-control system play?
- How will the grout joint be set using the tile’s tolerances and applicable installation guidance?
These questions help establish whether the project is ready and whether the installer’s plan is based on the exact product. They are not a substitute for the tile maker’s instructions or the applicable installation requirements. Ask for a clear answer about what will be checked, which documentation will guide the work and how unresolved product questions will be handled.
Handling and cutting deserve a place in that conversation because tile size affects the installation plan. Ask how the exact format will be moved, cut and laid out, rather than assuming a plan for a smaller tile automatically applies. The selected technical sources do not supply a universal handling method, so the installer’s plan should be product-specific and consistent with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not rely on a leveling system to correct the substrate
A lippage-control or leveling system can be considered as an installation aid, but it does not flatten an uneven substrate, ensure suitable mortar contact or replace trained installation. Ask how the surface will be prepared and how the chosen system fits the tile maker’s instructions rather than treating the accessory as a fix for a poor base.

If an installer proposes a system, clarify what it is intended to help control and what other steps are still required. A system is not a substitute for checking the surface, selecting suitable setting materials or following product directions. Verify that the specific system is appropriate for the tile thickness, joint layout and its own instructions; do not choose a tile simply because an accessory is available.

Verify substrate tolerances instead of assuming a universal number
The Tile Shop’s 2019 large-format installation guideline gives example substrate tolerances of no more than 1/8 inch in 10 feet and 1/16 inch in 24 inches. The same guideline says it does not supersede ANSI 108.5 or the TCNA Handbook. Treat those figures as that document’s guidance—not as a universal, current requirement for every product or project.
Before using any tolerance, confirm which current standard, tile instructions and project or jurisdiction specification apply. The relevant requirements depend on the product and installation conditions; the Tile Shop figures should not be quoted as a blanket rule without that confirmation.
If a contractor or product page cites a tolerance, ask what document it comes from and whether it governs this project. The two numbers above are examples from one retailer guideline published in 2019; they are not a replacement for checking current requirements. Standards and project specifications can be edition- and scope-sensitive, so the right answer is the one confirmed for the particular tile and installation.
Most importantly, do not mistake a leveling accessory for a tolerance check. The surface needs to be assessed and prepared in its own right. A system used during setting cannot establish that the substrate meets the applicable requirement or make a generic tolerance appropriate for every job.
Choose setting materials and grout joints from the product requirements
Do not generalize mortar choice or coverage from the fact that a tile is large. TCNA’s technical guidance identifies appropriate substrate preparation and correct mortar selection as important to successful large-format installation. Marazzi’s manufacturer guidance also emphasizes preparation, mortar contact and back-buttering, while directing readers to its installation instructions. These are useful reminders to consult product-specific directions, not a universal procedure or coverage promise for every tile.
Ask the installer to explain how the setting material and mortar contact will be determined for the exact product. A statement such as “we always use the same mortar” does not answer whether that material matches the tile maker’s instructions and the project conditions. Likewise, one manufacturer’s discussion of back-buttering should not be turned into a blanket instruction for every tile. Follow the applicable product guidance.
Grout-joint width also needs to be set from the tile’s tolerances and applicable installation guidance. A large or rectified tile does not automatically permit an arbitrarily narrow joint. Have the installer confirm the joint and layout against the exact product information and relevant requirements before work begins.

The product’s tolerances and the applicable installation guidance govern what is appropriate; the tile’s large size or a rectified edge alone does not establish a minimum joint. Use current standards and publications for the project
Standards and handbook editions can change. TCNA’s catalog lists a 2026 Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation and a 2025–2026 Handbook for Gauged Porcelain Tiles and Gauged Porcelain Tile Panels/Slabs Installation. Its catalog also lists ANSI A137.3/A108.19/A108.20 in an October 2025 edition. Check the current TCNA catalog when the project is specified rather than assuming an older reference is still the applicable edition.
The standards have different scopes: ANSI A137.3 addresses gauged porcelain product properties and grading; A108.19 addresses interior installation; and A108.20 addresses exterior installation. Which guidance is relevant depends on the material, intended use and project conditions. The ANSI / TCNA listing for the 2017 A137.3/A108.19 publication notes a later revision, another reason to verify the edition rather than rely on an old reference.
Use standards as part of a project-specific check, not as a substitute for product documentation. Confirm the tile’s use and details with the manufacturer, then identify the current installation guidance for that material and location. If an older specification, article or product sheet is being used, verify whether a later edition or revision applies. The catalog listings are version-sensitive, so recheck them when the project is specified.

The standards do not make every tile suitable for every location. Product selection and the installation plan still depend on the exact material and conditions.
A practical selection checklist
- Identify the location. Decide whether the tile is for a floor, wall, or another application, and whether the installation is interior or exterior.
- Confirm the exact product. Check the manufacturer’s listed use, dimensions, thickness, backing and product documentation for the selected color and format.
- Review the design at full scale. Use samples and a proposed layout to assess finish, pattern, variation and how the tile’s size works in the room.
- Have the substrate and installation plan assessed. Discuss preparation, handling, cutting, setting materials, mortar contact, lippage control and grout-joint layout with the installer.
- Confirm governing instructions and editions. Use the tile maker’s directions and the current applicable ANSI, TCNA and project requirements. Do not apply a retailer’s example tolerance as a universal specification.
- Resolve open questions before purchase. If the product’s approved use or installation requirements are unclear, get confirmation before ordering or scheduling the work.
For a more deliberate order of operations, begin with the product documents, not the sample board. Confirm the exact product and its approved use; compare its dimensions, thickness, backing and design; then review the room’s planned layout and substrate with the installer. Once the project plan is clear, confirm the setting materials, grout joint, lippage-control approach and current guidance that will govern installation.
This sequence helps avoid a common selection pitfall: choosing a format for its look, then discovering that the exact product variant or installation conditions have not been verified. It also makes conversations with the installer more precise. Rather than asking whether “large tile” will work, ask whether this product, in this format and thickness, is documented for this location and can be installed under the applicable instructions.
A suitable choice is one whose documented use matches the room and whose installation requirements can be met by the project. If either condition is uncertain, resolve it before committing to the tile.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose large-format tile for a floor or wall?
Start by confirming that the manufacturer lists the exact product, color, format and thickness for the intended use. Then compare dimensions, appearance and product details, and have the substrate and installation plan reviewed before ordering. Follow the tile maker’s instructions and current applicable ANSI and TCNA guidance.

Can large-format tile go on walls?
Some large-format products are specified for walls, but size alone does not prove that a particular tile is suitable. Check the product data sheet and installation instructions for the exact format and thickness. If the listed use is unclear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer before purchase.
What should I check before installing large-format tile?
Ask how the substrate will be checked and prepared, which current guidance applies, and how the installer will address handling, cutting, setting materials, mortar contact, lippage and grout-joint layout. Confirm that the plan follows the tile maker’s instructions for the exact product.
Does a leveling system make an uneven floor suitable for large-format tile?
No. A lippage-control system may be an installation aid, but it does not flatten the substrate, ensure suitable mortar contact or replace trained installation. The substrate must be assessed and prepared separately according to applicable project and product requirements.
What substrate tolerance should I use for large-format tile?
Do not assume one number applies to every project. The Tile Shop’s 2019 guideline gives examples of 1/8 inch in 10 feet and 1/16 inch in 24 inches, while stating that it does not supersede ANSI 108.5 or the TCNA Handbook. Confirm the current applicable standard, product instructions and project or jurisdiction specifications before applying a tolerance.
Can I use a very narrow grout joint with large or rectified tile?
Not automatically. Set the grout joint using the exact tile’s tolerances and applicable installation guidance. Large size or a rectified edge does not by itself justify an arbitrarily narrow joint, so confirm the layout before work begins.
Which ANSI or TCNA references are relevant to gauged porcelain tile?
ANSI A137.3 addresses gauged porcelain product properties and grading. ANSI A108.19 addresses interior installation, and A108.20 addresses exterior installation. The relevant guidance depends on the product and project; check current TCNA catalog listings because editions and revisions can change.
The Bottom Line
Choose by documented use first, then confirm the exact tile’s dimensions and details, the substrate preparation, setting and grout-joint plan, and current applicable guidance. Large format is a design choice as well as an installation commitment: do not order until the product and project requirements are clear.
