Start with the required output in pounds or kilograms per hour—not a residential room-area rating—and compare equipment only on a consistent rating basis. There is no universally best technology or model for every facility.
How to size a commercial or industrial humidifier
Commercial and industrial humidifiers are generally specified by moisture output per hour, such as pounds per hour or kilograms per hour. Residential products are more commonly rated in gallons per day, so those figures are not directly interchangeable. ASHRAE also cautions that manufacturers’ published evaporation rates and test criteria may differ; confirm the rating conditions and test method before comparing capacities. Its 2024 Handbook identifies AHRI Standard 640 as the commercial/industrial humidifier standard. Verify the current edition and whether a proposed model is listed or tested under it before making a certification claim. ASHRAE Handbook
Establish the design moisture load from the facility’s actual operating conditions and humidity objectives, then have the system designer account for the air-handling arrangement, distribution, operating schedule, and control response. Nominal room area alone is not an engineering sizing method. ASHRAE’s 2024 guidance is the basis for using hourly output and scrutinizing rating conditions; it does not establish a capacity-per-square-foot rule.
Information to assemble before requesting proposals
- Required moisture output and the conditions used to calculate it.
- Current and target relative humidity, operating temperatures, and expected load variation.
- Whether the humidifier will serve a duct, air handler, or space, and the available installation and distribution area.
- Available steam, electrical power, fuel, drainage, and water-treatment capabilities.
- Required controls, humidity sensors, high-limit protection, interlocks, redundancy, and response or turndown needs.
- Who will perform cleaning, water treatment, inspection, and service—and how much downtime the process can tolerate.
Steam or adiabatic: choose for the air and utilities
The core choice is between steam (isothermal) humidification and adiabatic humidification. Steam systems add external energy to create vapor before it enters the airstream, so air temperature remains nearly constant. Adiabatic systems put water in direct contact with the air; evaporation humidifies the air while lowering its temperature. These are different operating effects, not a universal ranking. ASHRAE describes both principles in its 2024 Handbook.

| Option | Moisture delivery and air effect | Utilities and installation considerations | Water and service considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam humidification | Produces vapor before injection; air temperature is near constant. | Needs a steam source or onboard generator, appropriate power or fuel, steam distribution, condensate provisions, and space for correctly routed lines and distributors. | Some designs accumulate minerals and require drainage, flushing or blowdown, and cleaning; follow the equipment-specific water and service requirements. |
| Adiabatic atomizing or misting | Evaporates water in the airstream and cools the air as it humidifies. | Suitability depends on air-handling integration, distribution, drainage, controls, and protection against wetting or condensation. | May require RO or DI water to limit mineral fallout; wetted materials must tolerate the selected water. Reservoir hygiene and cleaning are important. |
| Ultrasonic humidification | A form of water atomization; actual output and distribution depend on the equipment and installation. | Check the manufacturer’s rated conditions, power, controls, placement, and how moisture will be distributed through the facility. | Confirm feedwater treatment, mineral-control strategy, reservoir cleaning, and service intervals for the specific model. |
ASHRAE’s 2020 Handbook excerpt explains that atomizing systems may need reverse osmosis (RO) or deionized (DI) water to control mineral fallout, and that wetted materials must be compatible with treated water. Requirements vary by humidifier design and source-water conditions. Steam equipment is not automatically maintenance-free: mineral accumulation can require drains, flushing or blowdown, and cleaning. What the industrial ultrasonic category can—and cannot—tell you
Antair’s product page lists industrial ultrasonic humidifiers with nominal outputs from 3 to 60 kg/h, including a 24 kg/h model described by the manufacturer as heavy-duty. The company identifies factories, warehouses, greenhouses, printing, and textile settings as applications and asks customers to provide room dimensions, current and target RH, operating temperature, power supply, and application for selection. These are manufacturer statements, not independent performance findings; publication year is not stated on the page. Antair industrial ultrasonic humidifier

This product range shows that industrial ultrasonic equipment exists, but it does not prove suitability for a particular facility, establish comparative performance, or mean a standalone unit can meet a central HVAC or facility-wide load. Treat the quoted output as a starting point for a project-specific evaluation, not as a substitute for sizing and distribution design.
Make steam distribution part of the specification
A steam humidifier’s rated output cannot compensate for poor distributor or steam-line design. ASHRAE states: “Correct selection and installation of both the steam distributors and the steam lines from the humidifier are essential for proper performance of the humidification system.” The guidance also makes clear that line diameter, routing, drainage, material, and insulation affect performance and condensate handling. For atmospheric steam lines, ASHRAE’s 2020 excerpt calls for manufacturer-guided sizing, short routing, adequate slope and support, condensate drainage, and insulation. Poor sizing or routing can restrict flow or increase condensate losses. The equipment manufacturer’s instructions and the application-specific design govern; avoid treating a generic pipe arrangement as a design. ASHRAE, 2020 Handbook excerpt

Humidifiers need a documented cleaning and water-management plan. ASHRAE’s 2020 Handbook excerpt says periodic cleaning and draining are required to deter microorganism propagation. It specifically warns that water-atomizing systems may spread bacteria if reservoirs become contaminated and advises following the manufacturer’s hygiene instructions. This is a maintenance consideration, not a finding that every humidifier is unsafe. ASHRAE Handbook

- Get the manufacturer’s cleaning, draining, disinfection, and inspection instructions before selection.
- Confirm whether the design requires scale removal, flushing or blowdown, replacement parts, or treated-water monitoring.
- Check that service access and drainage are practical at the proposed installation location.
- Assign responsibility for routine service and keep the maintenance interval aligned with the manufacturer’s instructions and site conditions.
Use a project-specific shortlist, not a universal ranking
Compare proposed systems against the facility’s requirements rather than shopping by a “heavy duty” label. ASHRAE is the primary technical reference for capacity, technology, water, and distribution considerations. Armstrong International’s 2022 vendor literature also compares technology categories and says recommendations depend on available utilities; treat that as vendor guidance, not neutral consensus. Armstrong International resources
- Capacity: Does the stated output meet the calculated load, and are the rating conditions and test method disclosed?
- Air effect: Can the process accommodate near-constant air temperature from steam, or is evaporative cooling from adiabatic humidification appropriate?
- Utilities and integration: Are steam, power or fuel, drainage, duct access, line routing, and commissioning needs feasible?
- Water and materials: Is the source water acceptable, or is RO/DI treatment needed? Are wetted materials suitable?
- Controls and risk: Are RH sensing, high-limit controls, interlocks, turndown, redundancy, and protection against condensation or wetting addressed?
- Lifecycle fit: Compare installed cost, energy and water use, maintenance labor, replacement parts, and downtime on a project-specific basis. The sources cited here do not establish a general cost winner.
Large systems are often selected and installed as engineered equipment. Ask vendors and the project engineer to document the design basis, rating conditions, water requirements, distribution plan, controls, maintenance tasks, and commissioning criteria. Neither the available technical guidance nor the manufacturer example establishes a universally best model or independent comparative ranking.
