How to Choose FRP Composite Mesh: Sizes, Strength, and Compatibility

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose FRP composite mesh by the reinforcement system it must serve—not by opening size or a single tensile-strength number. First identify the substrate and application, then match the mesh geometry, directional design values, joints, detailing, durability evidence, and system approvals to the engineer’s design.

The examples below show why two products that both look like fiberglass grids may not be interchangeable. Product figures are attributed to the named manufacturers and should be checked against their current technical documentation before specification.

What FRP composite mesh is—and what it is not

FRP mesh is a grid of fiber-reinforced polymer bars or strands arranged in two directions. GFRP mesh uses glass fibers in the polymer reinforcement. It is supplied as sheets or rolls and embedded in a compatible concrete, mortar, resin, or strengthening system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Fiberglass mesh” is not a sufficient specification. Fine mesh used for plaster or EIFS, structural GFRP grid for concrete, and geogrids for soil reinforcement can look similar while having different bar sections, coatings, bond behavior, test methods, and design purposes. A product intended for one system is not automatically a substitute in another.

Start with the application and substrate

The first decision is where the mesh will be installed and what material will surround it. The substrate determines the load path, matrix, anchorage, cover, lap detail, and evidence you need from the supplier.

Concrete slabs, floors, pavements, foundations, and precast work

IMARA describes its IMC-MS GFRP mesh family for slabs, pavements, floors, foundations, and precast concrete. In these uses, the engineer must establish the required reinforcement in each direction, crack-control or flexural objectives, support conditions, cover, laps, openings, and construction-joint details. A mesh that is adequate for distributed crack control may not satisfy a primary flexural or punching-shear requirement.

Existing masonry strengthening

Gavazzi describes its GAVAGRID products as grids designed for reinforcement of existing masonry. Such a grid is part of a strengthening system: the masonry, connectors or anchors, mortar or grout, overlaps, corners, and load-transfer details all matter. A concrete slab mesh should not be substituted into a masonry strengthening design merely because its opening appears similar.

Composite reinforced mortar or CRM systems

A Fibre Net sheet copy describes FBMESH33X33T96AR FORCE as an alkali-resistant glass-fiber GFRP mesh for the RI-STRUTTURA FORCE CRM system. Because the available copy is hosted by a third party, obtain the current original manufacturer sheet before relying on its detailed values. The system designation, compatible mortar, anchorage, and installation sequence are part of the specification.

Other mortars, renders, or surface layers

Confirm that the mesh is a structural reinforcement product rather than a thin finishing mesh. Check the required embedment, alkalinity or chemical exposure, bond, minimum layer thickness, and whether the supplier approves the particular mortar or resin. “Alkali-resistant” describes a property of the named product; it does not by itself prove compatibility with every cementitious matrix.

How to read mesh size

Opening size is the clear distance between adjacent longitudinal and transverse bars. It affects bar count per metre, aggregate or mortar passage, crack distribution, lap length, detailing around openings, and the way loads are transferred into the grid. It is only one part of the geometry.

Bar diameter, strand section, and bars per metre

For a bar-based grid, record the outside diameter and, where supplied, the effective fiber or strand area. For a grid reported in force per unit width, record the number and section of strands in each direction. Two products with the same opening can have different reinforcement areas and capacities.

Sheet and roll format

Format affects handling, seams, waste, and the ability to keep the mesh in its designed position. Note the supplied width and length, whether the product arrives as rigid sheets or flexible rolls, how it is supported during placement, and whether the available length matches the planned laps. A convenient roll does not remove the need to detail edges, corners, supports, and construction joints.

Compare strength without mixing unlike units

Manufacturers report FRP mesh strength on different bases. IMARA gives a working transverse-bar tensile strength in MPa and a tensile modulus in MPa. Gavazzi gives warp and weft tensile strength in kN/m. EPSCement reports an average mesh tensile strength in kg/mm². These figures cannot be ranked directly without knowing the geometry, direction, test method, and design basis.

MPa, kN/m, and kg/mm² are not interchangeable headlines

MPa describes stress, or force divided by area. kN/m describes tensile force carried per metre of grid width. A force-per-width value already incorporates the amount and spacing of reinforcement in the grid; a bar stress value does not. kg/mm² may also be reported on an average, rather than characteristic or design, basis. Do not convert one headline number and declare equivalence without the product geometry, test method, safety factors, and design rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direction matters

Warp and weft are the two grid directions. Their capacities can differ substantially, as the GAVAGRID values show. Lay out the stronger direction where the design requires it, and verify orientation on drawings and installation instructions. If the design needs equal capacity in both directions, a unidirectional or strongly asymmetric grid may not satisfy it.

Working, characteristic, average, and design values

Ask whether each published number is an average test result, a characteristic value, a declared working value, or a factored design resistance. Ask what test standard, specimen conditioning, gauge length, and failure mode produced it. The engineer should use the value permitted by the governing design method, not the largest number in a brochure.

Check the complete compatibility chain

Compatibility means more than chemical resistance. The mesh must transfer load into the surrounding material and remain serviceable under the project’s exposure and deformation demands.

Substrate and matrix

  • Identify the concrete, masonry, mortar, grout, resin, or other matrix and its strength, thickness, curing, and surface condition.
  • Confirm the supplier’s approved matrix and whether primer, coating, connector, or anchorage requirements apply.
  • Check that aggregate size and workability allow the matrix to pass through and fully surround the mesh.
  • Verify cover, embedment, and tolerance so the grid stays in the designed plane during placement.

Bond and load transfer

Where the design relies on bond, node behavior, shear transfer, pull-off, or anchorage, request the relevant test evidence. IMARA specifically identifies joint shear or pull-off checks when relevant. A high tensile value for a straight bar does not prove that intersections, coatings, laps, or the mesh-to-matrix interface can transfer the required force.

Durability and exposure

Confirm environmental qualification for the actual moisture, alkalinity, temperature, chemicals, freeze-thaw exposure, and fire or service conditions. Do not turn a generic corrosion-resistance statement into a universal service-life claim. Require product-specific evidence and installation limits.

Joints and discontinuities

Detail laps, supports, edges, corners, penetrations, openings, movement or construction joints, and changes in thickness. Around an opening, simply cutting the grid can interrupt the intended load path; the engineer may need additional framing or anchorage. Keep the specified direction and lap length through each transition.

A step-by-step method for selecting a mesh

  1. Define the structural task. State whether the grid is for a slab, pavement, floor, foundation, precast element, masonry strengthening, CRM layer, crack control, or another documented system. Record the substrate and surrounding matrix.
  2. Identify the governing design requirements. Give the responsible engineer the jurisdiction, load cases, exposure, fire or durability requirements, serviceability limits, and applicable design standard. Do not select from a catalog before these constraints are known.
  3. Set the required reinforcement in each direction. Establish the required force, strain, stiffness, crack width, deflection, and anchorage performance in warp and weft. Use design values, not an unqualified average tensile number.
  4. Choose candidate geometry. Compare opening, bar diameter or strand section, reinforcement per metre, thickness, coating, and orientation. Check whether the opening admits the specified aggregate or mortar and whether the grid can be placed at the required cover.
  5. Check joints and load transfer. Review node, lap, bond, pull-off, shear, connector, and anchorage data wherever those mechanisms are part of the design. Obtain test reports for the exact product and system.
  6. Check detailing and constructability. Draw laps, edges, corners, openings, supports, construction joints, penetrations, and transitions. Confirm sheet or roll dimensions, cutting rules, fixing method, and support during the pour or render installation.
  7. Check durability and matrix compatibility. Match the product’s environmental qualification and approved mortar, grout, concrete, or resin to the project exposure. Confirm curing and installation limits.
  8. Verify approvals and identity. Obtain the current technical data sheet, declaration or assessment, certification, test methods, product code, revision date, and production traceability. Make sure the delivered label matches the approved submittal.
  9. Have the responsible engineer approve substitution. IMARA states that mesh substitution is governed by bar diameter, cell size, tensile capacity, joint performance, and structural design. Treat any change from the specified mesh as an engineered substitution, not a purchasing equivalent.
  10. Inspect delivery and installation. Check dimensions, damage, contamination, direction markings, batch or lot identity, overlap, cover, supports, and embedment before the matrix is placed. Record deviations and obtain approval before concealing them.

What to request from a supplier

Ask for a product-specific package rather than a generic declaration that the mesh is “stronger than steel” or “corrosion proof.” The package should include:

  • Exact product name, code, mesh opening, bar or strand dimensions, and reinforcement per metre in both directions.
  • Warp and weft tensile properties, modulus, strain, and the distinction between average, characteristic, working, and design values.
  • Test standards, specimen conditioning, failure mode, and date or revision of each report.
  • Node, lap, bond, pull-off, shear, connector, or anchorage data where the system relies on them.
  • Approved matrix, substrate preparation, cover, overlap, fixing, curing, cutting, and handling instructions.
  • Environmental, durability, fire, and temperature limitations relevant to the project.
  • Current declaration, assessment or certification, conformity documentation, and traceability information.

Standards and certifications mentioned in product literature

The cited product literature mentions EAD 260023-00-0301, EAD 340392-00-0104, and ISO 10406-1. Those references do not establish that every FRP mesh, country, application, or structural design is covered. Ask which document applies to the exact product and intended use, obtain the current assessment or test report, and have the responsible engineer confirm the governing jurisdictional requirements.

Calling a substitution equivalent to steel without a design check

Problem: A marketing comparison is treated as a code-approved replacement.

Correction: Have the responsible engineer check strength, stiffness, serviceability, durability, detailing, fire requirements, and load transfer for the actual project.

How the choice changes by project type

Concrete floor or slab

Begin with the slab’s structural role, support layout, loads, crack-width and deflection limits, cover, openings, and joints. Compare candidate grids by reinforcement per metre and directional design resistance, then verify that the selected format can be supported at the specified level during the pour. IMARA’s listed 50, 100, 150, and 200 mm openings and 2.0–6.0 mm bar diameters are catalog options, not a universal slab schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Masonry strengthening

Start with the masonry condition, wall geometry, existing cracks, connectors, mortar or grout, and the strengthening scheme. A GAVAGRID variant may be documented for this system, but its warp and weft values still need to be checked against the engineer’s required force, anchorage, laps, corners, and substrate preparation.

CRM or reinforced-mortar layer

Specify the complete system, including mesh, mortar, connectors, anchors, overlaps, surface preparation, curing, and installation sequence. For the FBMESH33X33T96AR FORCE description, confirm the current Fibre Net documentation and the RI-STRUTTURA FORCE requirements rather than treating the 33 × 33 mm opening as a stand-alone product specification.

Procurement and site checklist

  • Product code and manufacturer match the approved submittal.
  • Opening, bar or strand dimensions, width, length, and roll or sheet format are correct.
  • Warp and weft are identified and installed in the specified orientation.
  • Batch, revision, declaration, and certification documents are retained.
  • Mesh is clean, undamaged, and free of unauthorized cuts or kinks.
  • Laps, supports, cover, edges, corners, openings, and joints match the drawings.
  • Compatible matrix, embedment, curing, and temperature limits are observed.
  • Any proposed change is submitted to and approved by the responsible engineer before installation.

Bottom line

The right FRP composite mesh is the one whose complete, documented system satisfies the project’s application, substrate, directional design demands, joints, detailing, durability, and governing requirements. Use opening size to narrow the field, not to make the final choice. Keep MPa, kN/m, and kg/mm² in their proper context; verify current manufacturer documentation; and obtain project-specific engineering approval before replacing a specified mesh or steel reinforcement.
