A leak at the concealed gap between a frame and the rough opening is a different repair, usually involving foam backer rod or low-expansion window-and-door foam. Never caulk a joint that must open or close.
The right material depends on the leak’s location, gap size, movement, substrate, exposure and how much of the assembly you need to open. Diagnosing the path of the air before buying anything prevents a bead of caulk from binding a sash or a thicker strip from interfering with a latch.

Start with the moving-versus-stationary rule
Close the window or door and identify the exact edge where air enters. If the draft follows the edge that moves when the opening operates, weatherstripping is the usual approach. If air comes through a narrow, unmoving crack in trim or at a fixed joint, use a caulk suited to the materials and exposure. If the gap is hidden between the jamb and the wall framing, treat it as a rough-opening air-sealing job rather than an ordinary trim repair.
| Leak location | Likely approach | Key caution |
|---|---|---|
| Moving sash or door edge | Weatherstripping sized to the gap and opening | Do not obstruct latching or smooth operation; measure first. |
| Small fixed crack or trim seam | Caulk suited to the substrate and exposure | Keep caulk off the moving joint. ENERGY STAR’s trim procedure uses caulk for gaps no larger than 1/4 inch. |
| Larger gap at the jamb-to-rough-opening interface | Foam backer rod and/or low-expansion window-and-door foam; caulk may suit some gaps | Avoid bowing the frame and protect the window or door’s operation. |
This is not a contest in which one product always wins. A single opening can have more than one leak: weatherstripping may address the sash edge while caulk seals a separate trim seam, and the concealed rough-opening gap may require access behind the trim.

Find the leak before selecting a material
Look for the common signs
ENERGY STAR identifies drafts around closed windows or doors, visible gaps around trim, dust or pests entering through gaps, outdoor odors, and peeling paint near a frame as signs of air leakage. A cold surface or a moving curtain can suggest a problem, but the repair still depends on where the air is crossing the assembly.
Use a paper test at a closed opening
- Open the window or door, place a sheet of paper across the suspected contact area, and close the opening.
- Try to pull the paper out. If it slides easily, the closure may be loose, and thicker or otherwise correctly sized weatherstripping may improve the seal.
- Repeat at several points around the perimeter. A single tight spot does not prove that every other edge is sealed.
The paper test is a clue about compression at the moving edge, not a measurement for choosing a particular product. The strip must still allow the sash or door to latch and operate freely.
Trace air movement with incense
Hold an incense stick near a seam, sash edge or trim joint and watch for the smoke to bend. Movement indicates air flow and helps you map the leak. It does not, by itself, tell you whether weatherstripping, caulk or rough-opening work is appropriate; identify whether the joint moves and how large or concealed the gap is.
Separate a surface crack from a hidden gap
Examine the trim-to-wall line and the jamb-to-framing area independently. A visible, narrow crack at the trim is a caulk candidate. A broad or recessed void behind the casing can be the gap between the jamb and rough opening. ENERGY STAR describes removing interior trim to inspect this area when surface repairs do not resolve the draft.
When weatherstripping is the right choice
Use it on operable edges
Weatherstripping forms a seal while a door or window is closed and releases that seal when it opens. It belongs along the contact edges of an operable sash or door, not across a joint that must remain free to move. Select material sized for the actual gap and the way the opening closes; an oversized strip can prevent latching, while an undersized one leaves the air path open.
Measure a door systematically
The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 weatherization job aid directs installers to measure both sides of an exterior doorway and to measure the top or bottom when fitting weatherstripping or a sweep.

- Fit and fasten the weatherstripping securely according to its instructions.
- Close and open the door several times. Adjust the installation if the door rubs, fails to latch or no longer moves smoothly.
The job aid’s operating check matters as much as the initial seal. A door that is difficult to close can be forced out of alignment, and a window that cannot lock is not safely repaired.

Apply the same logic to windows
For a window, concentrate on the sash’s moving perimeter. Use the paper test at multiple points, then inspect whether the sash closes and locks normally after fitting the strip. Do not bridge the sash with caulk: the seal must release when the window is opened for ventilation or emergency egress.
If the draft remains
Do not keep stacking thicker strips on the moving edge. Recheck the trim and the area behind it. A failed weatherstripping repair often means the air is entering at a stationary seam or at the jamb-to-rough-opening interface, where a different method is needed.
When caulk is the right choice
Limit caulk to fixed cracks and seams
Caulk is appropriate for a small, stationary opening such as a trim seam. ENERGY STAR’s trim project specifies caulk for gaps 1/4 inch or less. Choose a product compatible with the surfaces and the exposure, and keep the bead on the fixed side of the assembly. If the line opens and closes with the sash or door, it is not a caulk joint.
Prepare and apply the bead
- Clean dust, loose paint and debris from the crack so the caulk can bond to sound surfaces.
- Apply a continuous bead with a caulk gun, filling the stationary gap without forcing material into the operating clearance.
- Smooth the bead with a finger or tool to press it into the seam and leave a neat transition.
- Allow the product to cure as directed before exposing it to movement or moisture.
Paintable caulk is a practical choice where the trim will be finished, but “paintable” does not make it suitable for a moving joint or a gap larger than the product and joint can support.

Know when trim work exceeds a simple repair
ENERGY STAR rates sealing behind trim as moderate-to-difficult do-it-yourself work. Complicated casing, fragile finishes or uncertain framing are good reasons to use a qualified contractor. If the home was built before 1978, disturbing painted trim can create lead dust; follow EPA lead-renovation guidance or hire a properly qualified professional.

Handle a rough-opening gap as a separate air-sealing job
What the gap is
The rough opening is the framed opening in the wall around a window or door unit. The jamb can appear sealed from the room while a concealed channel remains between the jamb and the framing. Air moving through that channel will not be stopped reliably by adding material to the sash edge or by painting over the interior casing joint.
Materials that can fit the condition
DOE Building Science Education lists caulk, canned spray foam or foam backer rod for suitable rough-opening gaps. Where spray foam is used around an operating unit, choose low-expansion foam specifically designated for doors and windows. Backer rod can establish the correct depth for a sealant and fill a larger void without packing the joint solid.
Do not force backer rod so tightly that it bends or deflects the frame. A bowed jamb can change the fit of the sash or door and create a new operating problem. Follow the foam manufacturer’s directions for placement and expansion, and protect the opening while the material cures.
Fibrous insulation alone is not an air barrier. DOE Building Science Education states: “Do not rely on fibrous insulation alone to block airflow; it will not air seal.” Insulation can reduce heat transfer after the air path is sealed, but loose or batt fibers by themselves do not close a moving air channel.
Inspect behind the casing when necessary
- Remove interior trim carefully if the surface crack and moving-edge checks do not explain the draft.
- Look for a continuous void between the jamb and the wall framing, including corners and the head of the unit.
- Choose backer rod, an appropriate caulk or designated low-expansion window-and-door foam according to the gap and access.
- Keep the frame straight while installing the material.
- Reinstall the trim, then test the window or door for full travel, latching and locking.
Older double-hung windows may have counterweight cavities and pulley openings that connect to the wall. If you seal near a working pulley, preserve the pulley’s function; blocking it can disable the window even if the room feels less drafty.
A practical decision sequence
- Close the opening. Check for air at the sash or door edge, the trim seam and the frame perimeter.
- Confirm movement. If the leaking joint moves during operation, plan for correctly sized weatherstripping and verify that the opening can still latch.
- Measure a fixed crack. For a stationary trim gap no larger than 1/4 inch, clean and caulk the seam with a compatible product.
- Investigate concealed voids. If the leak is behind the casing or at the jamb-to-framing interface, plan a rough-opening repair with backer rod and/or designated low-expansion window-and-door foam.
- Retest. Repeat the paper and incense checks, then operate the window or door through its full range.
- Escalate when conditions warrant. Use a qualified professional for complicated trim, lead-paint risk, uncertain framing or combustion-safety concerns.
Troubleshoot the most common failed fixes
Caulk was applied to the sash or door edge
Remove the material without damaging the mating surfaces, restore the joint’s ability to move and reassess the leak. Weatherstripping belongs on the moving edge; caulk belongs on the stationary crack.

A new strip makes the door hard to close
The material may be too thick, misplaced or compressed unevenly. Recheck the measurements at both jambs and the head or threshold, refit the strip and confirm smooth operation before leaving it in service.

The opening is sealed but combustion equipment behaves differently
Air sealing can alter pressure relationships in a home. ENERGY STAR warns that, in some situations, sealing a home or ductwork can cause combustion appliances such as water heaters to backdraft. A tighter home may also need mechanical ventilation to maintain safe indoor air quality. Where fuel-burning equipment is present, have a home-energy professional inspect and test for combustion-related problems before extensive air sealing.

Sealing an accessible draft can improve comfort, but it may not be the highest-impact energy project. ENERGY STAR’s priority guidance places attic air sealing at the top of the usual savings opportunities, followed by basement or crawlspace work. Doors, windows and walls generally offer less energy-use impact, although they are often accessible do-it-yourself areas. Its leak-location guidance likewise notes that major hidden leaks are often in attics and basements.
ENERGY STAR estimates up to 10% savings on annual energy bills from sealing air leaks and adding insulation. The page does not state a year for that estimate, and it applies broadly to combined air-sealing and insulation work. It is not a promised result from caulking one trim seam or weatherstripping one door.

A DOE Building Science Education page reports an Oak Ridge National Laboratory Buildings Technology Center study in which a 3/4-inch window rough-opening gap had an equivalent leakage area of 28.2 cm²/m²; after sealing from the interior, the area was 0.5 cm²/m². The consulted DOE text does not state the study year. The figures illustrate how a concealed rough-opening gap can dominate leakage; they are not a prediction for every window or installation.
Safety, access and assistance
Combustion and ventilation
Do not treat combustion warnings as a reason to leave an obvious small draft untouched. Treat them as a reason to assess the whole house when it contains fuel-burning appliances, has been extensively tightened or shows signs of pressure imbalance. Professional inspection and testing can identify backdrafting risks and ventilation needs.
Older painted trim
For homes built before 1978, plan for lead-safe work before disturbing painted casing. Dust-control requirements can make a contractor the safer option, especially when trim must be removed to reach a rough-opening gap.

Checklist before you buy material
- Mark whether the leak is at a moving edge, a fixed seam or behind the trim.
- Use the paper test on closed sash or door contact points.
- Use incense to trace air movement, while recognizing that smoke does not select the material for you.
- Measure both sides of an exterior doorway and the top or bottom when fitting weatherstripping or a sweep.
- Reserve caulk for clean, stationary cracks; ENERGY STAR’s trim procedure covers gaps up to 1/4 inch.
- For a rough-opening void, plan backer rod and/or designated low-expansion window-and-door foam, and keep the frame from bending.
- After installation, verify smooth opening, latching, locking and—where relevant—pulley operation.
- Consider attic, basement and crawlspace leaks if a small repair does not materially improve comfort.
- Arrange professional assessment when combustion appliances, pre-1978 painted trim or complicated framing are involved.
Bottom line: match the seal to the joint
Weatherstripping is for the moving edge of a window sash or door. Caulk is for a small crack that stays still. A hidden jamb-to-rough-opening gap is a separate air-sealing repair, and fibrous insulation alone will not stop its airflow. Diagnose first, install the least intrusive material that fits the joint, and confirm that the opening still operates safely.
