Choose two full-size HomePods if you already have an Apple TV 4K, sit mainly in front of the television, and want a compact, music-friendly setup. Choose Sonos if movies and games are the priority, you need several source devices, or you want to add a subwoofer and physical rear speakers.
The comparison is not simply two speakers versus one soundbar. A HomePod stereo pair uses two front-positioned cabinets with computational spatial processing; a Sonos theater can combine a soundbar, subwoofer, and speakers behind the seating position. Decide based on your sources, room, seating, bass expectations, expansion plans, and complete cost.

What you are actually comparing
Two full-size HomePods
This setup uses two HomePod (2nd generation) speakers, an Apple TV 4K, and the speakers placed on either side of the television. Apple lists the HomePod at $349 per speaker in the United States, so a pair is $698 before tax. The price excludes an Apple TV 4K if you do not already own one. See the current Apple buying page.
The pair can become the Apple TV’s default audio output. There is no separate soundbar, matching Apple subwoofer, or official rear-speaker theater expansion.
#1 Best Overall
- Features a 4" high-excursion woofer and five beamforming tweeters for deep bass, clear vocals, and detailed room-filling audio.
- Room Sensing technology automatically adjusts sound based on where the speaker is placed.
- Built-in Siri enables voice control for music, reminders, messages, smart home devices, and more.
- Supports AirPlay, Spatial Audio, Thread, Matter smart home control, Bluetooth 5.0, and Wi-Fi 4.
- Pair two HomePod speakers for stereo sound or use multiple units for whole-home audio playback.
Sonos Beam starter system
The Beam (Gen 2) is a TV-connected soundbar listed at $499 in the United States. You can use it alone, then add a Sub Mini and two Era 100 speakers as your budget and room allow. A Sonos store promotion observed around August 16–18, 2026 listed Beam, Sub Mini, and two Era 100 speakers at $1,361. Promotions and regional prices change.
Sonos Arc Ultra system
Arc Ultra is Sonos’s larger-room soundbar, listed at $1,099 in the United States. Add a Sub 4 for dedicated low-frequency output and Era 100 or Era 300 speakers behind the seating position. Promotional prices observed around August 16–18, 2026 included $1,898 for Arc Ultra plus Sub 4, $2,311 for Arc Ultra, Sub 4, and two Era 100 speakers, and $2,806 with two Era 300 speakers. These are not equivalent-cost alternatives to a HomePod pair.
What two HomePods can—and cannot—do
Apple documents full-size HomePod stereo pairs supporting Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1, and Dolby Digital 5.1 with Apple TV 4K. The speakers receive and process those formats, but both cabinets remain at the front of the room. That is different from placing surround speakers behind the sofa. Room shape, speaker spacing, ceiling height, reflective surfaces, and seating position affect the perceived result.

Do not treat two minis as an equivalent home-theater purchase. See Apple’s HomePod home-theater guidance.
HomePod setup path
- Open the Home app and create a stereo pair from the two full-size HomePods.
- Assign the pair and Apple TV to the same room.
- On Apple TV, open Settings → Video and Audio → Audio Output.
- Select the HomePod stereo pair as the default audio output.
Apple TV 4K 2nd generation or later supports eARC for returning audio from a compatible television or HDMI device connected to the TV. Apple documents the capability, but actual results depend on the TV, source device, audio format, HDMI settings, and passthrough behavior. The HomePods themselves do not connect to the TV by HDMI; Apple TV is the routing hub. Details are in Apple’s Apple TV home-theater instructions.
What Sonos adds for movies and games
A dedicated front stage
A Beam or Arc Ultra connects directly to a compatible TV through HDMI ARC or eARC. It is designed around TV dialogue and front-channel projection rather than relying on Apple TV as the audio hub. Sonos says Arc Ultra supports Dolby Atmos home theater with a compatible TV and ARC/eARC connection. eARC is preferable for the broadest high-quality format compatibility.

A real subwoofer option
HomePod has no official matching subwoofer. Sonos offers Sub Mini for smaller systems and rooms, and Sub 4 for larger systems. Sonos lists Sub 4 compatibility with Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam, Era 300, and Era 100 in relevant configurations. A subwoofer is most valuable for action films, science fiction, games, orchestral scores, and large rooms; in an apartment it can also disturb neighbors.

Era 100 is the less expensive surround choice at $219 each in the United States; Era 300 is the larger spatial-audio model at $479 each. Sonos positions Era 300 for spatial audio, while Era 100 offers a more compact route. Both require power near their positions. Sonos’s speaker range shows current models and prices.
Head-to-head decision factors
Sources and television compatibility
HomePods are simplest when every show, film, and game runs through Apple TV. If you use built-in TV apps, a console, cable box, or disc player, verify that the TV has eARC and passes the required formats back to Apple TV. Check the eARC-designated HDMI port, enable eARC and HDMI-CEC, and set digital audio output to pass-through or the manufacturer’s equivalent. Labels vary by brand and firmware.
Sonos soundbars connect to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port and are generally easier for mixed-source households. ARC/eARC does not guarantee Atmos: the TV must support the format and pass it through, and the source must deliver a compatible signal. Optical output may work with some Sonos products or adapters but can reduce format and control capabilities.
Music and smart-home use
HomePod combines Siri, Apple Music, AirPlay, stereo pairing, multiroom audio, and smart-home hub functions in a minimal setup. Its room sensing, computational audio, woofer, and beamforming tweeters are described in Apple’s technical specifications.

- Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.
- Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
- Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
- Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
- Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.
Placement and seating
A HomePod pair produces its strongest stereo image for a listener centered between the speakers. That is a practical consequence of two front positions, not a manufacturer room-size measurement. If several seats are far off-axis or the room is wide and open, a soundbar plus rear speakers is more likely to provide consistent coverage.
Sound and bass expectations
Two HomePods can deliver substantial bass and a wide stereo presentation from two cabinets, particularly in a small or medium room. A Beam alone offers conventional TV integration and an upgrade path. Once a Sonos system includes a subwoofer and rear speakers, it has separate hardware for low frequencies and sounds arriving from behind; that is a different class of theater rather than an automatic proof that every Sonos product sounds better.
Control and maintenance
HomePod has less hardware and no soundbar under the TV, but troubleshooting can involve Apple TV, the Home app, the network, the TV, and eARC. Sonos requires its app for setup and management and adds components, power outlets, and placement decisions. Its benefit is that you can replace or add a soundbar, subwoofer, or surround pair independently.

Use this compatibility checklist before buying
- Identify the exact Apple TV 4K generation, especially if you need eARC.
- Check whether the TV has HDMI ARC or eARC and which port carries that label.
- List every source: Apple TV, built-in apps, consoles, cable, disc players, and switches.
- Confirm the TV supports Dolby Atmos passthrough if that feature matters.
- Measure the room and note whether seats are centered, spread out, or behind the planned speaker line.
- Check for power outlets where rear speakers would stand.
- Decide whether neighbors or building construction make a subwoofer impractical.
- Include Apple TV in the HomePod budget if you do not already own one.
Recommendations by household
Apple-focused, music-first household
Buy two full-size HomePods when you already own Apple TV 4K, use Apple Music and AirPlay, sit in front of the TV, and do not require rear effects or a subwoofer.
Movie-first household
Choose Sonos. Start with Beam for a smaller room, or Arc Ultra for a large TV and room; add the appropriate subwoofer and surrounds when impact and immersion justify the cost.
Rank #4
- Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.

Gamer or multi-source household
Sonos is usually the safer architecture because the soundbar connects to the television. Confirm the TV’s ARC/eARC passthrough behavior before purchase.
Apartment dweller
Two HomePods or Beam alone may be sufficient. If you choose Sonos, consider Sub Mini rather than Sub 4 and adjust bass for neighbors and room size.
Large open-plan room
Arc Ultra with Sub 4 and rear speakers is the more plausible Sonos comparison. Two HomePods may work for centered listening but offer less physical coverage and no official theater expansion path.
Renter or frequent mover
Two HomePods minimize hardware. Sonos remains portable, but rear speakers need outlets and each additional component adds packing, placement, and setup work.
Starting from zero
Compare the complete system, not just speaker prices. HomePod requires Apple TV for its theater role; Sonos starts with a TV soundbar. The cheaper initial purchase may not be the cheaper finished system.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not call two front-positioned HomePods “true 5.1” or “true 7.1.” They support those formats through processing, but they are not physically placed rear channels.
- Do not compare a $698 HomePod pair with an Arc Ultra, Sub 4, and rear-speaker package as if they were equal systems.
- Do not assume any HDMI-equipped TV supports eARC or Atmos passthrough.
- Do not assume HomePod mini has the same surround-format support as full-size HomePod.
- Do not plan to use arbitrary Sonos speakers as the TV’s front left and right channels; Sonos’s normal architecture uses a compatible soundbar or home-theater product as the TV-connected front unit.
- Do not buy a subwoofer solely because it is available; room size, building construction, and listening habits matter.
