How to Choose and Install SDR-35 Pipe for Downspout Drainage

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SDR-35 PVC is a suitable buried, gravity-flow option for many downspout drainage systems, but it is not an automatic answer for every property. Choose the diameter, solid or perforated wall, fittings, slope, burial method and outlet for your roof runoff, run length, rainfall, soil, traffic loads and local rules. NDS lists 3-inch and 4-inch SDR-35 drain pipe for downspout systems and recommends smooth-interior SDR-35 sewer-and-drain pipe for landscape drainage.

What SDR-35 means in a downspout system

SDR-35 identifies a PVC pipe dimension ratio: the outside diameter is related to the wall thickness by a standard ratio. In residential drainage work, the important practical point is that SDR-35 is intended for non-pressure gravity drainage and sewer service. Westlake describes its gasketed SDR-35 product for non-pressure gravity sewer and drainage, so it belongs in a system that carries water by slope rather than by pump pressure.

A buried downspout line normally collects roof runoff at a basin or adapter and carries it to an approved discharge point. The pipe should remain open, supported and sloped continuously. It should not be treated like a pressurized water-supply line, and a downspout should not be tied into a sanitary sewer or a footing drain.

The designation alone does not determine whether a system will work. A pipe can be structurally appropriate yet undersized, badly connected, blocked by sediment or discharged where local rules prohibit it. The layout and outlet are as important as the pipe material.

When SDR-35 is a sensible choice

  • Buried gravity drainage: The line has a reliable fall and does not depend on a pump.
  • Smooth interior: A smooth wall generally offers less resistance to flowing water and is easier to flush than many ribbed interiors.
  • Consistent system components: NDS specifies 3-inch or 4-inch SDR-35 in its downspout materials and advises keeping component sizes consistent.
  • Accessible joints: Gasketed or compatible solvent-weld connections can be selected for the particular fittings and maintenance plan.
  • Known structural conditions: The trench, embedment and backfill can be prepared to protect the pipe from crushing or distortion.

These advantages do not prove that SDR-35 outperforms Schedule 40 PVC or corrugated drain pipe at every home. The appropriate choice depends on the design and site conditions rather than on a universal “best pipe” claim.

Choose the pipe size before digging

NDS’s low-capacity downspout layout uses either 3-inch or 4-inch SDR-35 drain pipe. Select one size for the connected components unless a designed transition is required. A larger pipe is not automatically better if the downspout adapter, basin outlet or emitter remains smaller.

Decision What the documented guidance supports What you still must determine
3-inch SDR-35 Listed by NDS as an option for its downspout system. Whether the connected downspout, fittings and expected runoff can pass the required flow.
4-inch SDR-35 Listed by NDS and commonly used with 4-inch downspout connectors and adapters. Whether the outlet, trench and local requirements support the selected diameter.
Different diameters in one run Requires a purpose-made transition and a design reason. Hydraulic effect, cleanout access and compatibility at every joint.

Roof area, local rainfall intensity, number of downspouts, run length and available fall control capacity. The supplied guidance does not provide a universal sizing equation or a design value for a particular roof. For a large roof, a long combined run, a steep site or a line near a foundation, have the layout checked by a qualified drainage professional or your local authority.

Decide between solid and perforated pipe

Solid-wall SDR-35 for conveying downspout water

Use solid pipe when the goal is to move collected roof water to a defined outlet without intentionally releasing it along the trench. Solid construction keeps water in the line and limits soil entering through the pipe wall.

Perforated pipe for planned infiltration or collection

Perforated pipe serves a different purpose: it allows water to enter or leave through openings. It may be appropriate in a designed dispersal or subsurface drainage arrangement, but it is not a substitute for a solid conveyance line from a downspout. Do not mix perforated sections into a downspout run unless the design identifies where infiltration is wanted and how sediment will be controlled.

Plan the route and outlet

Start at each downspout and mark the intended path, cleanout or catch basin locations, high points and final discharge. Keep the route far enough from the foundation to avoid returning water to the footing area. NDS’s low-capacity instructions place a Spee-D basin below the downspout elbow. The basin receives the drain pipe, provides a cleanout and surface-water inlet, and can accept a 6-inch SDR-35 riser to raise the grate.

Every buried line needs a legitimate outlet. Depending on the site and local code, that may be a storm drain, a pop-up emitter or daylight discharge away from the house. Fernco specifically warns against connecting a downspout to a sanitary sewer or footing drain. A daylight or storm connection may be restricted, so confirm permission with the local authority before excavation.

  1. Verify the design and permissions. Confirm the discharge point, pipe diameter, solid or perforated selection, expected flow, easements and local requirements. Check for buried utilities before digging.
  2. Lay out and dry-fit the parts. Position the downspout adapter or connector, basin, pipe, elbows, cleanouts and outlet components without permanent joining. Check that every connection matches the measured downspout profile and the buried pipe diameter.
  3. Establish continuous fall. For NDS’s low-capacity layout, slope the trench at least 1% away from the house. That equals a 1-unit drop for every 100 units of horizontal run. Avoid bellies that can retain water.
  4. Excavate a stable trench. Remove organic soil and loose spots. Provide enough width for the pipe and for proper embedment and compaction. Burial depth under driveways, walkways, traffic areas and frost-prone ground is site-specific and must follow local requirements.
  5. Prepare the bedding and embedment. Support the pipe uniformly, with no rocks or voids concentrated beneath the barrel or fittings. Westlake emphasizes trench preparation, embedment, careful handling and controlled backfill for its gasketed SDR-35 product.
  6. Install the basin beneath the elbow. Set the catch basin so the downspout enters cleanly and the grate or riser finishes at the planned surface elevation. Keep the basin accessible for cleaning.
  7. Join the pipe and fittings. Make watertight joints where the system calls for them, using waterproof silicone or the specified glue and procedure for the components. Do not improvise a solvent-weld joint on a fitting that is designed for a gasket, or force mismatched diameters together.
  8. Route to the discharge. Maintain the planned slope and connect the final elbow, storm connection, daylight outlet or pop-up emitter. If using the NDS arrangement, the pop-up emitter includes an elbow with a weep hole.
  9. Check emitter elevation. The NDS installation document states: “This system requires that the elevation of the Pop-Up Emitter be lower than the elevation of where stormwater enters the drainage system or the system will not drain.” Measure this relationship before covering the pipe.
  10. Test before backfilling. Run water through each downspout and inspect every joint, basin and outlet. Correct leaks, reverse slope, standing water or a blocked emitter while the trench is open.
  11. Backfill in controlled lifts. Protect the pipe from displacement and compact the specified embedment and backfill without dropping large rocks onto the pipe. Finish the surface so water does not pond against the foundation.

Match the connector to both ends

A downspout connection has two separate fit questions: the shape and dimensions of the above-ground downspout, and the diameter and material of the buried pipe. Measure the rectangular or round downspout rather than relying on its appearance.

Component example Documented fit Use the information correctly
Fernco 4-inch downspout connector Described as fitting Schedule 40 PVC, ABS, SDR-35 and corrugated drain pipe. Still verify the actual pipe outside diameter and clamp range before purchase.
Fernco DSC-43 Listed for a 3-by-2-inch rectangular downspout into 4-inch drain pipe. Use only when the measured downspout matches that profile.
Fernco DSC-534 Listed for a 5-by-3-inch downspout into 4-inch pipe. Do not substitute it for a smaller or differently shaped downspout.
Polylok PDB-DS adapter family Includes configurations for several downspout profiles and 4-inch or 6-inch SDR-35 connections. Match the measured profile and SDR-35 connection size to the specific adapter configuration.

Fernco describes its flexible connector as removable for inspection or flushing. It also states that the connector does not filter debris from the gutter, so a removable joint does not eliminate the need for clean gutters and basin maintenance.

Solid, smooth SDR-35 versus other pipe choices

Option Potential benefit Questions to resolve before choosing
Solid SDR-35 PVC Smooth-interior gravity pipe with documented use in downspout and landscape drainage systems. Will the diameter, joint system, burial support and outlet handle the site?
Schedule 40 PVC A rigid PVC option that may be selected where its fittings, availability or structural requirements suit the design. Does the pipe’s outside diameter match the planned adapters, and is pressure-rated construction actually needed?
Corrugated drain pipe Flexible and available in drainage configurations. Will the ribbed interior, joint style, crushing resistance and cleanout access be acceptable?
Perforated drainage pipe Can collect or disperse water through openings in a designed drainage field. Where should water enter or leave, and how will soil and sediment be controlled?

The reviewed documentation does not establish a performance test proving SDR-35 is superior to Schedule 40 or corrugated pipe for every residential installation. Select the system that can be correctly sized, supported, joined, cleaned and legally discharged.

Structural handling and burial details

SDR-35 is not a license to bury pipe without preparation. Westlake reports a minimum pipe-stiffness value of 46 psi for its gasketed SDR-35 product; that figure applies to the product configuration described on its page, not to every SDR-35 pipe or class. Soil support and installation quality affect the buried system’s behavior.

  • Do not drag pipe over sharp rock or drop fittings into the trench.
  • Keep the barrel continuously supported and prevent point loading at couplings.
  • Compact embedment around the pipe before placing heavy backfill.
  • Use greater care beneath vehicle areas; required cover and structural design are local and site-specific.
  • Account for frost, expansive soil, groundwater and erosion where those conditions occur.

Outlet elevation and pop-up emitter checks

A pop-up emitter can provide a visible, distributed discharge, but it works only when the line can drain to it. In the NDS arrangement, the emitter must be below the elevation where stormwater enters. A high outlet, an undetected hump in the trench or a blocked weep hole can leave water standing in the pipe.

At the outlet, check that the discharge cannot undermine a slope, cross a property boundary or flow toward the foundation. If the local authority requires a storm-drain connection or prohibits surface discharge, follow that requirement instead of copying a generic layout.

Maintenance and troubleshooting

Water backs up at the downspout

  • Inspect the gutter and downspout for leaves and sediment.
  • Open the basin or cleanout and check for debris at the adapter.
  • Confirm that the pipe was not installed with reverse slope or a belly.
  • Flush toward the approved outlet and inspect the removable connector if fitted.

The pop-up emitter never opens

  • Check that the emitter is lower than the system entry elevation.
  • Look for a blocked outlet, buried grate or clogged weep hole.
  • Verify that the pipe has not been crushed or displaced during backfill.

Joints leak or separate

  • Confirm that the fitting is intended for SDR-35 and for the selected joint method.
  • Recheck outside diameters and gasket seating; do not force a mismatched adapter.
  • Replace damaged pipe or fittings rather than sealing a structural crack with surface caulk.

Water appears at the foundation

  • Inspect the route and outlet for a disconnected or perforated section where solid conveyance was intended.
  • Check the final discharge for erosion or backflow toward the house.
  • Have a professional review the layout if groundwater, footing drains or a high water table are involved.

Availability and purchasing notes

“4-inch SDR-35 PVC drain pipe” is a useful search phrase, but a particular seller or stock-keeping unit may not be available. A Ferguson listing for 4-inch-by-10-foot SDR-35 PVC solvent-weld drainage pipe showed no availability and required certification to purchase at the time observed. Confirm current stock, pipe length, wall construction and joint type before planning a trench around a specific listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the pipe, adapters, basin, cleanouts and emitter as a compatible system. A low-priced pipe is not a saving if its outside diameter does not fit the connector or if the outlet requires a different fitting.

Pre-backfill checklist

  • Pipe diameter is consistent from the downspout adapter through the planned run, or every transition is intentional and compatible.
  • The downspout profile was measured and matched to the connector or adapter.
  • Solid and perforated sections are used only where the design calls for them.
  • The trench has the required continuous fall; NDS’s low-capacity layout uses at least 1% away from the house.
  • The basin, cleanout and grate remain accessible.
  • Joints use the specified gasket, silicone or solvent-weld method.
  • The outlet is legal, stable and directed away from the foundation.
  • The pop-up emitter, if used, is below the stormwater entry elevation.
  • Water was run through the system and the pipe was inspected before burial.
  • Embedment and backfill are suitable for the soil and any traffic above the line.

Bottom line: use SDR-35 as a designed system, not a slogan

For many residential downspout projects, smooth-interior SDR-35 PVC provides a sound buried gravity-drainage path. NDS documents 3-inch and 4-inch options, a 1% minimum slope for its low-capacity layout and a basin-to-emitter arrangement with specific elevation requirements. The right installation still depends on measured downspouts, compatible fittings, proper trench support, a legal outlet and site-specific runoff and soil conditions. If those conditions cannot be verified, pause before digging and obtain local code guidance or a drainage professional’s design.
