A third-rack dishwasher can make room for flatware and cooking utensils, but the rack designs vary: some are shallow trays, while others have adjustable sections for small bowls and cups. The right choice depends on what you load, the space needed on the middle rack, and the exact model’s specifications—not the rack count alone.
What a third rack adds—and what it does not guarantee
A third rack is a sliding loading level above the usual two racks, commonly used for flatware and utensils. Some designs also accommodate small dishes, cups, or glasses. It can free space in the lower flatware basket, but it does not automatically increase usable capacity for every load: the rack’s depth and shape may affect clearance below.
For example, Bosch says its standard third-rack models offer “30% more loading area” than Bosch dishwashers with two racks. That is a manufacturer comparison limited to those configurations, not a general capacity result across brands or a guarantee that every household can load 30% more dishes. Compare the rack design with what you actually wash
Shallow tray for flatware and utensils
A relatively shallow tray can hold cutlery and larger utensils while leaving more room for taller items on the middle rack. Bosch describes its standard rack as V-shaped to help preserve space for items such as stemware below. Check the shape and available clearance in the exact model; a brand-level description is not a fit guarantee.

Deeper, adjustable rack for small dishes
A deeper rack may suit ramekins, measuring cups, or other bulky small items. Bosch says its flexible rack has expandable wings and adjustable tines; those adjustments can increase flexibility but do not mean every item will fit alongside a full load. Measure or test against the dishes you use most often.
Rack adjustment and middle-rack clearance
Check whether the third rack itself adjusts and whether the middle rack can be repositioned. Then consider the combined arrangement: a rack that fits bowls above may leave too little room for stemware or tall plates below. Look for clearance guidance in the exact model’s manual or specifications, and compare it with your tallest regularly loaded items.

Compare exact models, not brand reputations
Features such as noise rating, drying system, wash jets, rack adjustability, and ENERGY STAR certification vary by model. Manufacturer specifications describe what a model offers; they do not establish comparative cleaning or drying performance. The examples below illustrate how to evaluate listings, not a tested ranking.

Check fit, installation, drying, and efficiency
Confirm the appliance fits the kitchen
- Measure the opening and check the exact model’s dimensions and installation requirements.
- Verify that the door, hoses, water and electrical connections, and nearby cabinetry will work with the installation plan.
- Check rack clearances with your tallest plates, stemware, and frequently used utensils. Feature pages cannot establish fit in your individual kitchen.
Choose drying and wash features for your needs
Compare the named drying system and available options, especially if you frequently wash plastics or want a particular level of convenience. KitchenAid describes ProDry on the KDTS424SPS as combining a heating element, water-repellent technology, and natural ventilation. Treat that as the manufacturer’s description, not independent evidence that it outperforms another system. Likewise, sensors, spray jets, and cycles are features to compare—not proof of better cleaning.

Check noise and energy information model by model
Use the dBA figure listed for the exact model, but do not assume that ratings from different brands are directly comparable test results without a common test basis. Confirm current ENERGY STAR status and energy-use figures for the exact model rather than inferring them from the brand or product family.

- List your usual load. Note whether you mostly need a place for flatware and utensils or want to fit ramekins, cups, and small bowls on the top level.
- Compare rack geometry. Check usable depth, adjustable wings or tines, and how the rack affects middle-rack clearance.
- Match the rest of the specifications. Compare the exact model’s drying system, noise listing, wash features, dimensions, and current energy information.
- Verify availability and installation. Check that the model is currently sold, review seller and service terms, and confirm the appliance and racks fit your kitchen and dishes.
Without independent comparative tests, manufacturer pages alone cannot identify a universally “best,” quietest, most reliable, or best-cleaning third-rack dishwasher. They can help narrow the choice by rack layout and listed features; the final decision should turn on exact-model fit and the specifications that matter in your home.
