How to Choose a Safer Detour When an Interstate Is Backed Up

A navigation app’s detour is only a proposal. Check official 511 information, confirm the alternate’s status and suitability, and avoid uncertain remote roads.

Before leaving a backed-up interstate, check the official state or regional 511 service for the route’s current closures, conditions and travel time. Treat a navigation app’s detour as a suggestion, not proof that the road is open or suitable. If you cannot confirm an unfamiliar route, stay on a familiar state or major road, follow posted directions, or revise your trip rather than risk getting stranded.

Should you get off the interstate?

Not automatically. A detour may save time, but a route that looks shorter on a screen can lead onto an unfamiliar local or remote road with uncertain conditions. There is no universal rule that a local-road detour is safer than waiting on the interstate, and the available guidance does not establish comparative crash risk for the two choices.

Make the decision using information about the specific incident and roads ahead. If the interstate is closed, follow official instructions and posted detour signs. If traffic is merely slow or stopped, check current official information before leaving the route, then weigh confirmed road status, conditions, familiarity, travel time, weather and vehicle suitability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The key question is not simply, “Which line on the map is shorter?” It is, “Can I confirm enough about this alternate to make a reasonable decision for this location, these conditions and my vehicle?” A route may look direct while including roads you do not know or whose current status is unclear. If you cannot verify the basics, a time-saving estimate is not enough to make the route a sound choice.

Likewise, staying on the interstate is not a universal answer. An official closure or incident direction may require you to leave, while a slow-moving queue may not. The right action depends on the actual situation and the directions in place. This guide cannot certify any particular route as safer without knowing the location, vehicle, weather and closure details.

Check official traveler information first

Use the 511 service for the state or region where you are driving. Depending on the provider, it may show incidents, closures, construction, road conditions, camera views, alternate routes and estimated travel times. Coverage and features differ, so do not assume that every road or alert is included.

For example, Arizona’s traveler-information service is available at AZ 511, and California’s Bay Area service is at 511.org. Use the service relevant to your location; these examples do not cover every state or region. Check the incident and the proposed alternate where available, including closures, construction, reported conditions and camera views.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the event affecting the interstate: Is there a reported incident or closure, and does the service provide an alternate route or expected travel time? Then check the roads the navigation app wants you to take. An alert about the interstate alone does not establish that a suggested local road is open or suitable. If the 511 service provides camera views, they may help you inspect the reported scene or route, but features vary and a camera view does not necessarily cover every road you would use.

Pay attention to what the service does not show as well as what it reports. Some providers have broader coverage or more features than others. If your proposed route is not represented, treat its status as unconfirmed rather than reading the absence of an alert as proof that the road is clear. This is especially important when an app is routing you away from a familiar major road and onto a remote or unfamiliar one.

Federal rules in the 2023 edition of 23 CFR §511.311 set program requirements for certain real-time traveler information. They include a designed accuracy requirement of at least 85 percent and, for observed hazardous driving conditions and specified weather-caused roadway or lane closures or blockages, a 20-minute-or-less timeliness requirement measured from observation. These are program requirements, not a guarantee that an individual alert is correct, nor proof that every 511 service updates every road in real time. See the federal regulation.

Those numbers are not a score for an individual route and should not be used to calculate the odds that a particular alert is right. The accuracy figure is a designed accuracy requirement for qualifying real-time information programs. The 20-minute requirement applies to the specified information measured from observation; it does not mean every road, event or 511 provider refreshes every 20 minutes. Conditions can change, and the information available for one road may differ from what is available for another.

Evaluate the proposed detour

A navigation app can help identify options, but it may not have current information about a closure, road surface, weather hazard or vehicle restriction. Oregon Department of Transportation warns: “Be aware that the app on your phone or in your GPS device might not have the latest information — don’t follow it blindly!” Check an app’s proposed route against current official information before taking it.

ODOT’s advice is particularly relevant when the route leaves a major road: “If you are not familiar with an area and current road conditions, stay on state roads and don’t attempt detours onto roads you don’t know.” Read its GPS navigation guidance.

That does not mean an app is useless or that every unfamiliar road is closed. It means the route line is a proposal that needs checking. The app’s estimate may not settle whether the road is open, what its current condition is, or whether it is suitable for your vehicle. If official information does not answer those questions, do not fill the gaps with assumptions.

Compare the real choices rather than relying on a route line or a single travel-time estimate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirmed status: Is the alternate open, and are there reported incidents, work zones or restrictions? If the available official source does not cover a road, note that you have not confirmed it rather than assuming it is clear.
  • Road conditions: Do official reports or available cameras show conditions relevant to the route? Consider whether the information applies to the actual roads in the proposed route, not just the interstate.
  • Familiarity and road type: Does the route remain on a state or major road you know, or lead onto an unfamiliar local or remote road? ODOT specifically advises staying on state roads when you are unfamiliar with an area and current conditions.
  • Time: What current delay or travel time is reported for each option? Treat estimates as information to consider, not a guarantee. A shorter estimate alone does not establish that an alternate is safer.
  • Weather and season: Could weather affect the alternate or make a remote road harder to travel? If current conditions on the route are not clear, avoid treating a navigation estimate as confirmation of passability.
  • Vehicle suitability: Is the road appropriate for your vehicle and the conditions? If you cannot establish that, do not assume it is. The sources do not provide a universal vehicle checklist or a route-specific suitability rating.

There is no evidence-based universal risk score for these factors. In particular, a shorter estimated trip does not by itself establish that a detour is safer.

These comparisons help identify what is known and what remains uncertain; they are not a mathematical formula. One route might have a reported closure, another might have no available condition information, and a third might stay on a state road you recognize but take longer. The available guidance does not establish how to assign a numerical weight to those tradeoffs, or which specific choice is safer in every circumstance.

Be careful not to compare unlike information. A travel-time estimate is not a road-condition report, and a map line is not confirmation that a route is open. Similarly, a camera view is useful only to the extent that it shows the relevant location and current conditions. Use official information to check the proposed route itself wherever the service provides it, and recognize when the available information is incomplete.

Use this decision sequence before leaving the interstate

  1. Check before departure from your lane or route. When safely stopped or before setting out, consult the relevant 511 service for the incident, closure, construction, road condition and travel time. Use camera views or alternate-route information if that service provides them. Do not try to read or operate a phone while driving.
  2. Verify the app’s route. Compare its suggested roads with official status and condition information. Treat the route as unverified if it leads somewhere unfamiliar and you cannot confirm that it is open and suitable. Check the proposed alternate, not only the interstate queue.
  3. Choose a route you can reasonably assess. Favor a confirmed, familiar state or major road over an uncertain remote-road shortcut. Consider reported weather, travel time and whether the route suits your vehicle. Do not assume that the fastest estimate is the best option.
  4. Follow official directions and signs. Do not use general detour advice as a reason to disregard posted closures, traffic-control devices or a designated incident detour. Federal traffic-control guidance addresses detours, but the correct route for a particular incident depends on the signs and directions at that location.
  5. If you cannot verify a safe option, pause or change the plan. Wait for official direction, pull over somewhere safe before checking information, consult a local source or map, or reconsider the trip. ODOT notes that an overnight stop can be preferable to becoming stranded on a remote road.

Use the sequence as a check on your decision, not as a promise that a particular outcome will be safe. For example, if an app offers a faster route but you cannot confirm the status of an unfamiliar road, the missing information matters. If an official closure or detour is in place, that direction matters more than a general preference for a familiar road. If the available information is not enough to assess an option, pause, seek current official direction or revise the plan instead of treating uncertainty as reassurance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sequence also gives you a practical stopping point: if you cannot verify the alternate, you do not have to keep searching while driving or choose it just because traffic is frustrating. You can remain on an appropriate familiar route, wait for official directions, safely stop to check, or change the trip. ODOT specifically notes that stopping overnight can be preferable to ending up stranded on a remote road.

Check information without using a phone while driving

Do not read or operate a phone while driving. Check the route before leaving, use a hands-free or voice option only where legal and appropriate, or pull over safely before consulting a screen. A 511 service is useful only if you can access it without creating a distraction or stopping in an unsafe place.

If you are already in traffic, do not attempt to compare route options on a phone while driving. Wait until you can check without driving, use an appropriate hands-free or voice option where legal, or pull over safely first. “Pull over” means choosing a safe place to stop; it does not mean stopping in a location that creates another hazard. If none of those options is available, do not let the need to inspect an app push you into using a phone at the wheel.

Planning before departure can make the decision simpler: know which official traveler-information service covers the road you will use and how to access it safely. The sources do not establish that every provider has the same interface or information, so learn what the relevant local service actually offers rather than assuming it will provide a particular alert or camera view.

What a paper map can—and cannot—tell you

A road atlas or paper map can help you understand how roads connect and whether an app is proposing a route through an unfamiliar area. ODOT recommends consulting a map when a navigation suggestion is uncertain. A map is static, however: it cannot verify current closures, weather, road condition or passability. Pair it with current official traveler information rather than treating it as a live status source. A regional map or road atlas is useful as an orientation backup, not a substitute for current alerts.

A paper map may give you broader route context than a small screen, such as showing how the proposed road fits into the surrounding network. That can help you recognize that an app is suggesting a route away from roads you know. It still cannot answer the time-sensitive questions that matter during an incident: whether a road is currently closed, what weather is doing there, or whether the road is passable now. Use a map to understand geography, then use current official information to check status.

If you keep an atlas or map for travel, regard it as a backup for orientation rather than a live navigation product. A paper map can provide modest practical route context, but no affiliate offer or particular product has been verified. Official 511 services are public traveler-information resources; their features differ by provider.

When the answer is to stay put or change plans

If official information does not confirm the alternate, or the route depends on roads whose condition and suitability you cannot assess, do not let an app’s time savings make the decision for you. Stay on a familiar route when appropriate, wait for official instructions, or stop somewhere safe and reassess. If conditions make continuing uncertain, revising the trip—including delaying travel or stopping overnight—can be a more prudent choice than taking a remote road with unknown status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Stay put” here does not mean ignoring an official instruction to leave a closed road or take a designated detour. Follow posted signs and official directions for the incident. It means that you need not take an unverified shortcut solely to escape a queue. If you do not have enough information to judge the alternate, waiting for clearer official information or changing your plans remains an option.

Likewise, asking locally or consulting a paper map can help with context, but neither is a replacement for current status information. A map cannot tell you whether a road is closed today, and an informal suggestion may not tell you what the official incident route is. Keep the distinction clear: use current official sources for closures and conditions where available, use maps for route context, and follow signs and directions at the scene.

This guidance is U.S.-focused and draws on state and regional examples; 511 availability, road coverage and features vary. Conditions can change quickly, so use the latest official information for the road you are actually on. The federal figures cited above come from the 2023 edition of the regulation and describe program requirements, not outcomes for a particular state or route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get off the interstate when traffic is stopped?

Not automatically. Check the relevant state or regional 511 service for the incident, closures and conditions before choosing an alternate. If the interstate is officially closed, follow posted signs and official directions. If traffic is slow or stopped without a closure, compare confirmed route status, familiarity, travel time, weather and vehicle suitability; there is no universal rule that a local detour is safer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a GPS or navigation-app detour safe to follow?

Treat it as a proposal, not confirmation. An app may not have the latest closure, road-condition or weather information. Verify its suggested roads with current official traveler information where available. If it sends you onto an unfamiliar or remote road whose status and suitability you cannot confirm, do not follow it blindly.

What should I check on 511 before taking an alternate route?

Check the incident and proposed alternate for closures, construction, reported road conditions and travel times. Use camera views or alternate-route details if the local service offers them. Features and coverage vary, so an unlisted road is not necessarily confirmed clear.

What if I cannot confirm the detour’s conditions?

Do not assume the route is open or suitable. Stay on a familiar state or major road when appropriate, wait for official direction, pull over safely before checking more information, consult a map for route context, ask locally, or revise the trip. ODOT notes that an overnight stop can be preferable to getting stranded on a remote road.

Can a paper map tell me whether a detour is open?

No. A map or road atlas can help you understand how roads connect and provide route context, but it cannot verify current closures, weather, road conditions or passability. Pair it with current official traveler information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do the federal 85 percent and 20-minute figures guarantee that a 511 alert is correct and current?

No. In the 2023 edition of 23 CFR §511.311, at least 85 percent is a designed accuracy requirement for certain real-time information programs. The 20-minute-or-less timeliness requirement applies to specified observed hazardous driving conditions and weather-caused roadway or lane closures or blockages, measured from observation. Neither figure guarantees an individual alert or means every road and service updates in real time.

Can I check my phone while waiting in traffic?

Do not read or operate a phone while driving. Check before setting out, use an appropriate hands-free or voice option where legal, or pull over safely before consulting a screen. Do not stop somewhere unsafe just to check a route.

The Bottom Line

Before leaving a backed-up interstate, check the relevant official 511 service and verify the proposed alternate’s status, conditions and suitability where information is available. A navigation app is a proposal, not proof that a road is open or safe for your vehicle. Follow official directions and signs; if you cannot confirm an unfamiliar route, choose a familiar option when appropriate, wait safely, or revise the trip.
