There is no universal furnace replacement cord. Use a cord only if the installation manual for your exact furnace model permits a cord-and-plug connection and specifies compatible electrical requirements and installation parts. A generic appliance cord or extension cord is not a substitute.
Can you replace a furnace power cord?
Only if the furnace’s manufacturer instructions allow a power cord for that model and describe how it must be connected. The Carrier Series 100 59TP5A installation instructions cover a cord installed in the furnace junction box; they do not establish that every furnace is designed for plug-in operation. Check the furnace nameplate and the exact model’s installation manual before sourcing a replacement.
For the cited Carrier instructions, the cord must meet the furnace’s listed electrical requirements: “Power cords must be able to handle the electrical requirements listed in Table 11. Refer to power cord manufacturer’s listings.” Carrier Series 100 59TP5A Installation Instructions. Requirements in a manual are model-specific; do not apply one furnace’s voltage, current, or circuit specifications to another.
What to check before buying
- Identify the furnace. Record its full model number from the rating plate and find that model’s installation manual and parts documentation.
- Confirm a cord connection is permitted. Look for the manufacturer’s instructions for power-cord installation in the furnace junction box. If the manual does not clearly permit it, do not assume a cord can be fitted.
- Match the cord to the stated requirements. Check the electrical rating, cord type, listing, and any specified accessory or part number against the manual and the cord manufacturer’s listing.
- Verify the connector and installation method. The cited Carrier instructions require a strain-relief bushing or connector approved for the cord type, along with correct grounding and lead connections. Follow the wiring diagram for the exact furnace.
A search phrase such as “listed furnace power cord kit with strain relief” may help locate candidates, but it does not establish compatibility. No universal part number or specific verified marketplace listing is established here.

Why a generic cord or extension cord is not a safe shortcut
A cord that physically fits a plug or reaches an outlet may still fail to meet the furnace’s electrical rating, listing, connector, or grounding requirements. Furnace cord installation is not equivalent to swapping an ordinary appliance cord: the junction-box connection and strain relief must follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The cited Carrier manual also warns installers to replace the junction-box cover without pinching wires.
When to call a professional
Have a qualified HVAC technician or electrician handle the work if the cord is damaged, the correct replacement is unclear, the manual does not clearly describe a cord connection, or installation involves wiring changes. Consult model-specific parts documentation rather than guessing at a replacement part number. If you do not have the required electrical knowledge, do not open the junction box or attempt the wiring yourself.
