How to Choose a Public Boat Landing for Your Boat and Trailer

Choose a public boat landing by confirming current conditions with its managing agency and checking that the water approach, ramp, parking, and passenger facilities fit your boat, trailer, and trip date.

Choose a public boat landing by checking the managing agency’s current status and rules, then confirming that the water access, ramp, parking, and boarding facilities suit your specific boat, trailer, tow vehicle, passengers, and trip date. A map pin or general boat-size guideline cannot certify that a particular site is usable today. Verify the details with the agency responsible for that landing before you tow.

Start with the agency that manages the landing

Public access information is local, and different agencies may manage landings on the same waterbody. Start with the state, county, city, federal, or other public agency responsible for the site. Use its access listing to find candidate landings, then look for current condition reports, closures, posted restrictions, and launch rules. If the listing does not answer a question that affects your trip, contact the managing agency directly.

A state locator is useful within its scope, not a nationwide answer. For example, Minnesota DNR’s Lake Finder and public-access information can help locate Minnesota sites, but they do not establish whether a landing elsewhere is open or suitable. Minnesota has almost 3,000 public access sites; the Minnesota DNR says about half are administered by the DNR and the rest by local and federal agencies. The publication year for that count is not stated on the agency page, and the figure applies to Minnesota, not the United States.

That distribution is a practical reason to identify the actual manager instead of assuming the state agency controls every launch on a lake. If a state listing points you to an access managed by a county, city, or federal agency, use the managing agency’s information for site-specific rules and current conditions. A locator can help you find a candidate; the manager is the place to confirm details about that candidate.

Do not treat information about ordinary hours, fees, or a typical facility as confirmation for the specific access you intend to use. Minnesota DNR says its public accesses are generally open 24 hours unless posted otherwise and notes that fees can apply when an access is in a park requiring a vehicle permit. Those statements describe Minnesota guidance; check the site’s own current rules and any local notices.

Confirm before towing

  • Is the landing open on your planned date, and are there temporary closures or restrictions?
  • Are there posted hours, launch rules, or fees? If a fee applies, how is it paid?
  • Which agency manages the site, and where does it publish current conditions?
  • Does the listing describe the actual launch you plan to use, rather than a nearby access point on the same waterbody?

When you contact the manager, focus on details that could change your choice: whether the access is currently open, whether there are known low-water or ramp-end concerns, whether trailer parking is provided, and whether a boarding dock or pier is available. Ask about the specific landing and your intended trip date. If staff cannot confirm a detail, keep it on your list of unknowns rather than turning an unverified assumption into a yes.

Conditions can change with water level, weather, maintenance, or management decisions. If current status is not clear online, ask the manager rather than assuming an old listing or map pin is current.

Match the water approach to your boat and the day’s conditions

A ramp can be present and still be difficult to use if the water is too shallow at its end, the approach is exposed to waves, or the underwater transition is uneven. Minnesota DNR identifies shallow offshore water as a challenge during low-water conditions and notes that wave-prone locations can be difficult or unusable in windy conditions. These are reasons to check both site information and conditions near your trip date—not evidence that any particular landing is unsafe.

Think about the entire path from the ramp into navigable water, not just the visible paved or surfaced section. The relevant question is whether the approach and water depth will work for your boat at the expected level and conditions. A location that works in one season or at one water level may not work on another date.

Separate what you can see from what needs confirmation. A ramp surface may look usable from shore, but that does not tell you whether the water beyond it is deep enough for your craft or whether waves will make the exposed approach difficult on your trip day. If the manager’s listing does not describe water-level concerns, ask whether it has a current condition report rather than relying on an old photograph or a general description of the access.

Check the ramp end and underwater transition

At low water, the end of the ramp deserves particular attention. Michigan DNR warns that power loading—using engine power to move a boat onto a trailer—can erode material beyond the ramp, leaving a hole nearer the ramp and a mound farther out. Trailer tires can become caught in the hole, and a boat may ground on the mound. The agency recommends checking the ramp, using a winch, and avoiding high engine power.

  • Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure

When you arrive, inspect the ramp end and surrounding water for visible unevenness or hazards before committing the trailer. Do not assume that a smooth surface above water continues evenly below it. Follow posted procedures and local launch practices; if the transition appears unsuitable for your rig or conditions, do not try to overcome it with more engine power.

This warning is about a possible consequence of power loading, not a claim that every landing has a hole or mound. It explains why the underwater part of the launch matters even when the portion visible from the parking area appears intact. If you find a condition that makes the ramp end unsuitable, do not treat greater throttle as a substitute for a usable ramp and a winch-based approach.

Use design guidance as context, not as a current depth report

Ramp design recommendations can explain why a site behaves as it does, but they do not establish a given landing’s present condition. Illinois DNR recommends that the underwater portion of a ramp extend 2.5–3 feet below the lowest expected water level as a design recommendation for access development. That figure is not a measurement of any particular ramp today.

Minnesota DNR gives a general boat-ramp design slope of 12–15% as a range that tends to work well; steeper or flatter slopes can create different difficulties. This is engineering guidance, not a survey of a landing you are considering. The agency also states: “The slope of the boat ramp should be steep enough to launch the boat without the vehicle entering the water.” A design principle cannot substitute for checking the actual ramp, water level, and fit with your vehicle and trailer.

These figures describe different design considerations: the Illinois recommendation concerns how far the underwater ramp portion extends below an expected low-water level, while Minnesota’s percentage concerns ramp slope. Neither number tells you the current water depth, actual slope, surface condition, or suitability of an individual access. Treat them as context for questions to ask, not as a pass/fail measurement for a site you have not inspected.

Check that the ramp and trailer combination are compatible

Assess the ramp as part of your complete boat-and-trailer setup. Consider the surface and slope, the transition from the approach onto the ramp, and whether the combination can be launched and retrieved safely under the expected conditions. A ramp that works for one trailer or tow vehicle may not be a good fit for another.

Minnesota DNR says 12–18 foot boats can be launched at most Minnesota ramps and that some sites can handle larger boats. This is a broad Minnesota-specific guideline, not a guarantee about a named landing, a maximum capacity, or a rule for other states. Boat length alone also does not answer every fit question: verify the particular site’s conditions against your boat, trailer, and tow vehicle.

Use the boat-size guidance as a starting point only if you are considering a Minnesota launch. “Most ramps” does not mean every ramp, and it does not establish that your trailer can be positioned or retrieved safely at a particular site. A longer boat may be accommodated at some locations, but the guidance does not identify which ones or establish a universal upper limit. Ask the manager about the particular access rather than treating a general range as site approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing, think through both directions of the launch: getting the boat off the trailer and retrieving it later. The official guidance identifies ramp surface, slope, and the approach as relevant design factors, while Michigan DNR’s warning highlights the ramp-end transition. If any of those details are unknown, make that uncertainty part of the decision rather than assuming that a successful launch at another ramp proves this one will work.

If the agency’s public listing does not give enough detail about the ramp, ask the manager what is known about its surface, slope, approach, and current condition. Do not infer a ramp’s suitability from its name, a photograph, or another boater’s experience at a different water level.

Verify trailer parking and room to maneuver

Confirm that the site has a place for both your tow vehicle and trailer, as well as enough room to turn, queue, and position your rig. A parking area that accommodates cars does not necessarily have spaces for vehicles towing trailers. Do not assume that a map symbol or a general statement that parking is available tells you the number, layout, or availability of trailer spaces.

Check the managing agency’s listing for parking details, and ask if it does not say whether trailer parking is provided or how the lot is arranged. Site-specific parking counts and maneuvering dimensions are not established by statewide design guidance for an arbitrary landing. If the lot is full or the approach leaves too little room to handle your rig, an otherwise suitable ramp may not work for that trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider parking and launching as connected parts of the trip. The ramp itself may fit your boat and trailer, but the landing is not a practical choice if you cannot leave the tow vehicle and trailer in an authorized place afterward or maneuver into position. Confirm where the trailer and tow vehicle may be parked, rather than assuming that the same parking arrangement applies at every public access.

Consider docks, boarding, and passenger needs

Check whether the landing has a boarding dock or pier and whether it suits the people using it and the way you plan to load passengers. A dock may be important for your group, but its presence, layout, and suitability need to be confirmed for the site. Do not assume every public launch has one.

The federal 2010 ADA Standards include provisions for boat-launch boarding piers, including an example involving changing water levels. That standard is a reference for applicable accessibility requirements; it is not proof that a particular facility complies or that the same provision answers every site-specific question. For compliance decisions, confirm which current requirements govern the facility. For trip planning, ask the managing agency about the boarding facility and assess it against the needs of your passengers.

Keep two questions distinct: whether a dock or pier exists, and whether it is appropriate for the passengers who will use it. A listing that mentions a boarding facility does not establish its current condition, layout, or suitability for your group. Ask the manager for site-specific information, especially if boarding access is essential to the trip.

Compare candidate landings with the same checklist

If more than one access could work, compare each using the same decision points rather than choosing the nearest map pin. Record what the agency confirms, what you can observe, and what remains unknown. This makes it easier to distinguish a verified fit from an assumption.

Decision point What to confirm Why it matters
Current status and rules Open or closed status, posted restrictions, hours, fees, and the manager’s latest condition information Access and rules can be site-specific and may change; general guidance is not a current site report.
Water access Expected water level and depth at the ramp end, exposure to wind and waves, and any known underwater hazards Shallow offshore water, wave exposure, or an uneven ramp end can make launching difficult.
Ramp and rig fit Surface, slope, approach transition, and suitability for your boat, trailer, and tow vehicle Design guidance describes general principles, not the condition or compatibility of an individual landing.
Trailer parking and maneuvering Whether trailer spaces exist, where the tow vehicle can go, and whether there is room to turn or queue Car parking does not establish trailer capacity or maneuvering space.
Boarding and passenger needs Whether a dock or pier is available and whether it fits the people using it Facility presence and accessibility are local questions that should be checked with the manager.

For each candidate, mark a point as confirmed only when the agency’s current information or direct confirmation supports it. If water depth, closure status, trailer parking, or a passenger’s boarding needs remain uncertain, resolve that uncertainty before choosing the site. A site should not be called the best option solely because it is closest or appears suitable on a map.

You can compare the candidates without inventing a numerical score. First identify requirements that are essential for your trip, such as current access, a workable water approach, room for your trailer, or a needed boarding facility. Set aside any candidate that fails a confirmed essential requirement. Then compare the remaining options on details that matter to your group, and give unresolved facts less weight than information confirmed by the manager.

A simple record helps keep that comparison useful: write down the landing name, managing agency, date you checked, what the agency confirmed, and what is still unknown. This is especially helpful when a locator lists several nearby accesses or when one site’s general description is more detailed than another’s. More descriptive wording is not automatically proof that the site is the better fit; compare the same points for each option.

Make the final choice for the trip date

  1. Identify the manager. Find the agency responsible for each candidate landing and use its official access information.
  2. Check current status and rules. Confirm closures, restrictions, hours, fees, and any condition reports for your planned date.
  3. Check water and ramp conditions. Ask about low-water concerns, the ramp end, and exposure to waves if the listing does not answer your questions.
  4. Match the site to your rig. Consider the boat, trailer, tow vehicle, ramp surface and slope, approach, and your ability to launch and retrieve without relying on high engine power.
  5. Confirm parking and passenger facilities. Verify trailer parking, maneuvering room, and any boarding dock or pier your group needs.
  6. Recheck close to departure. Use the manager’s latest information because a prior visit or old listing cannot verify conditions on the day you travel.

If a landing fails any essential requirement—such as current access, usable water depth, a safe fit for your rig, or necessary passenger access—choose another verified option. If a critical detail cannot be confirmed, treat it as unknown rather than assuming it will be fine.

Use the same standard for every candidate. Do not let a convenient location make you overlook an unconfirmed closure, and do not let a general design recommendation stand in for current water or ramp information. The final choice should be a landing whose current status is checked and whose known facilities match the actual boat, trailer, tow vehicle, and passengers for that date.

What statewide guidance can and cannot tell you

Official state and federal materials offer useful context on how ramps and public access are managed, but they are not independent inspections of individual landings. Minnesota’s boat-size, hours, slope, and access-count guidance applies to its own context. Michigan’s power-loading warning explains a possible kind of ramp-end damage, not the condition of a site in another state. Illinois’ underwater-extension recommendation is design guidance, not a live depth reading. The federal 2010 ADA Standards are a regulatory reference whose applicability must be checked for a compliance decision.

Without the state, waterbody, trip date, boat and trailer dimensions, tow vehicle, and passenger needs, no particular landing can be ranked or certified. The managing agency’s site-level information is the deciding source for current status and local details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a public boat landing and check whether it is usable?

Start with the agency responsible for the waterbody or access. Use its official listing to identify candidate launches, then check current status, closures, posted rules, condition reports, water-level concerns, and site details. If the information is incomplete, contact the manager before towing. A locator or map pin does not confirm that a landing is usable on your trip date.

Can a 12–18 foot boat use any public ramp?

No. Minnesota DNR says boats 12–18 feet long can be launched at most of its ramps, and that some sites can handle larger boats. This is Minnesota-specific general guidance, not a guarantee for every Minnesota access or a rule for other states. Confirm the particular ramp’s conditions and fit with your boat, trailer, and tow vehicle.

Does a ramp design specification tell me the ramp’s current depth?

No. Illinois DNR’s recommendation that the underwater ramp portion extend 2.5–3 feet below the lowest expected water level is design guidance, not a measurement of a particular ramp today. Likewise, Minnesota DNR’s 12–15% general design slope guidance does not establish an individual site’s actual slope or current condition.

Why should I inspect the end of a ramp at low water?

Michigan DNR warns that power loading can erode material beyond a ramp, creating a hole and a farther-out mound. Trailer tires can catch in the hole, and a boat can ground on the mound. Check the ramp end, follow local practices, use a winch, and avoid high engine power. The warning describes a possible hazard, not a condition present at every landing.

Are public boat landings always open 24 hours, and are they free?

No universal rule can be assumed. Minnesota DNR says its public accesses are generally open 24 hours unless posted otherwise, and fees can apply at accesses in parks that require a vehicle permit. Those are Minnesota-specific statements; check the chosen site’s current hours, fees, and rules with its managing agency.

Does a public boat landing have to include an accessible boarding pier?

Do not assume a particular landing has a dock or pier, or that a listed facility meets your group’s needs. The federal 2010 ADA Standards include provisions for boat-launch boarding piers, but their applicability and compliance at a specific facility require checking the governing requirements. Ask the managing agency about the site.

The Bottom Line

Choose a public boat landing only after checking its current status with the managing agency and confirming that the water approach, ramp, trailer parking, maneuvering space, and any needed boarding facilities fit your boat, trailer, tow vehicle, passengers, and trip date. Treat statewide guidance as context—not a site-specific guarantee—and resolve critical unknowns before towing.
