You can spot warning signs, check posted information and ask the building’s owner or manager for inspection and maintenance records—but you cannot certify a lift’s mechanical safety by riding in it. Formal inspection, testing and repairs must be handled by professionals qualified under the rules where the building is located.
What you can check as a resident or lift user
Pay attention to changes in how the lift operates. Note what happened, when it happened and which lift was involved, then report recurring or worsening problems to the building’s responsible person or manager.

- Unusual or worsening sounds
- Jolting, uneven or inconsistent movement
- The car stopping above or below the floor level
- Doors that stick, fail to operate normally or appear damaged
- Repeated shutdowns or service interruptions
- Visible damage to the car or its doors
These are symptoms to report, not proof of a particular fault. Do not force doors, enter a lift shaft or machine room, or try to test brakes, doors or other safety devices yourself.

Note the lift identification, building contact details and emergency instructions. If inspection status or a certificate is displayed, record what it says and any relevant date. Display requirements differ by location, so the absence of a particular poster does not by itself establish that the lift is unsafe or unlawful.

Ask the building manager for records
Request the latest periodic inspection or examination report, including its date and result. If it lists defects, ask for the correction records and whether any restrictions or follow-up checks apply. You can also ask for recent maintenance visit records and the service provider’s identity and locally required qualifications or registration.
What to do when there is a problem
- Report recurring symptoms promptly. Give the manager the lift identification, what you observed and when it happened. Avoid presenting a symptom as a diagnosis.
- If someone is trapped or there is immediate danger, use the posted alarm or help route. Follow the building’s emergency procedure and contact local emergency services when appropriate.
- Do not attempt a rescue by forcing doors or entering the shaft. Such actions can expose the person trapped and others to further danger.
How owners and managers can verify oversight
The owner or responsible building person has a central role in arranging maintenance and inspection. A contractor may carry out the work, but the owner or manager should be able to show what was done and how reported defects were followed up.

Lift inspection rules depend on location
There is no single inspection interval or defect deadline that applies everywhere. Requirements can also depend on the lift type, local building rules, regulator directions and the safety classification of a defect. Check the current rules with the authority responsible for the building, and follow the actual inspection report.

Hong Kong’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department says a responsible person should engage a registered lift contractor for periodic maintenance at intervals not exceeding one month and check the lift’s operating condition and associated equipment daily before it begins operation. This is Hong Kong-specific guidance, not a global daily inspection requirement. See the EMSD daily lift operating-condition checklist.

Even where a responsible person carries out daily observations, those checks do not replace professional maintenance, formal examinations or testing. A rider’s observations may help bring a problem to attention; they cannot establish whether a lift’s ropes, brakes, controls, doors or other safety devices are sound.
