These are checks, not guarantees: flood and landslide conditions can change quickly, and a road marked open may become unsafe or impassable.
Check the exact route, not just the district
Before searching, write down the road and each connecting section you plan to use, including bridges, passes and river crossings. A district name alone may not reveal a blockage farther along the route. Identify an alternate route as well, but verify it separately rather than assuming it is usable.
Use the official Department of Roads blocked-locations page and highway traffic updates as your first checks. Look for the exact corridor and read the live entry for closures, restricted traffic or reopening information. The pages are official starting points; a page listing or embedded status view should not be treated as confirmation for a particular road unless you can inspect the relevant current entry.
Record what you found and when you checked it. A status without a check time is difficult to compare with a later update or a local report.

Cross-check road status and hazards
Use BIPAD’s road layer
Open the BIPAD real-time portal and inspect the planned corridor in its road layer. Its status labels are Open, Closed and Partially Open; the portal attributes road information to DoR. “Partially Open” does not, by itself, specify waiting times, vehicle limits or controlled-passage arrangements. Confirm those details with a route-specific authority or local source before proceeding.
Check rainfall, rivers and alerts
BIPAD also displays rainfall and river-monitoring layers attributed to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM). The DoR NAVIGATE dashboard offers routing, advisories, recently opened roads, incident reporting and road-safety alert layers for rainfall, floods and landslides. Use these to understand hazards affecting the corridor, not as proof that a road is safe. A road-status report is a snapshot; new rain, flooding or a landslide can change conditions afterward.

Confirm locally before departure
Close to departure, ask a local authority, district administration, transport provider or trusted local contact about the specific section you intend to travel. These contacts are practical route checks, not substitutes for official road information. The Australian Government’s Smartraveller Nepal advice recommends following local authorities and monitoring local media because conditions can change rapidly with little warning.
- Refresh the DoR blocked-road and highway updates for your corridor.
- Compare the result with BIPAD’s road status and relevant rain or river information.
- Check NAVIGATE alerts and recent incident information for the route.
- Ask a local source whether the specific road section is passable now, and whether restrictions or delays apply.
- If sources conflict, do not rely on the most favorable report. Contact local authorities and delay until the route status is clear.
Repeat the check before entering a remote stretch if weather or reports are changing. The sources do not establish a universal refresh interval. Do not rely on a route planner’s estimated time, an old social-media post or an earlier traveler’s account as a current closure check.

Know what the dated reports can—and cannot—tell you
Smartraveller’s Nepal advice was marked current on 4 October 2026 and updated on 8 September 2026. It said flooding and mudslides from 26 August continued to affect parts of Nepal, damaging roads and transport networks, with further flooding, landslides and debris flows possible. It also notes that remote places can be cut off for days and that Nepal’s monsoon period is generally June to September, though conditions are unpredictable.
On 25 September 2026, Radio Nepal reported that NDRRMA information from District Administration Offices showed main-road closures or traffic restrictions in 26 districts after continuous rainfall. That report is a dated snapshot, not a current closure list; it cannot establish which roads are open now.

The Smartraveller advice current on 4 October 2026 specifically urged reconsidering travel to flood-affected areas near the Bhote-Koshi and Trishuli rivers in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitawan, Tanahu, Nawalpur and Gorkha. Treat that as dated risk guidance, not a permanent restriction; check current local directions before traveling.

When to postpone and how to prepare
- Postpone nonessential travel into flood- or landslide-affected areas, and follow any local authority restriction even if an online map still shows a route.
- Avoid planning to drive vulnerable rural roads at night. Smartraveller warns that road travel is more dangerous at night, especially in rural areas; the Ministry of Home Affairs warning relayed by Radio Nepal on 25 September 2026 also advised against night driving on vulnerable sections.
- Leave enough flexibility to turn back or wait if weather or road status changes. Do not plan a remote arrival after dark if a delay could leave you stranded.
- Keep your phone charged and monitor local media. A power bank can help where electricity is unreliable, but it does not guarantee mobile signal or current road information.
- Keep emergency numbers accessible and verify locally that they are reachable: Nepal Police 100, ambulance 102 and fire and rescue 101 are listed by Smartraveller. Radio Nepal’s 25 September 2026 report also relayed 1234 for disaster emergencies or rescue, 1114 for the Armed Police Force and 1155 for weather information.
