You can influence the flower color of some hydrangeas by adjusting soil conditions—but this works chiefly with color-responsive bigleaf and mountain hydrangeas, and it is not guaranteed. Soil pH affects whether aluminum in the soil is available for the plant to take up. Identify your hydrangea and test the soil before choosing an amendment.

How do I change my hydrangea color naturally?

For eligible hydrangeas, manage the soil rather than treating the flowers: soil pH changes aluminum availability, and aluminum taken up by the plant contributes to blue coloration. Lower pH generally makes aluminum more available, favoring blue flowers; higher pH makes it less available, favoring pink. The result also depends on the plant’s cultivar and the soil’s existing aluminum and phosphorus.

University of Massachusetts Amherst Extension describes approximate conditions for most bigleaf hydrangeas: blue below pH 5.5, pink above pH 6.5, and purple or mixed colors between those levels. These are guidelines, not guarantees for every plant or garden. UMass Extension’s hydrangea color guidance was last updated July 14, 2026. The University of Arkansas Extension likewise describes very acidic soil around pH 5 to 5.5 as tending blue and soil around pH 6.5 as tending pink. Arkansas Extension’s bigleaf hydrangea profile does not state a publication year.

Which hydrangeas can change color?

The soil-and-aluminum color shift applies chiefly to color-capable bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) and mountain hydrangeas (Hydrangea serrata). Cultivar matters: some lean toward one color regardless of pH, and some bigleaf cultivars remain white. UMass Extension identifies these as the hydrangeas whose flowers turn blue through this soil mechanism.

Do not expect the same method to reliably switch smooth, panicle, oakleaf, or climbing hydrangeas between pink and blue. If you do not know the type, identify it before changing the soil.

How do I turn pink hydrangeas blue?

  1. Confirm the plant. Make sure it is a color-responsive bigleaf or mountain hydrangea. A cultivar’s genetics may limit the change.
  2. Test the soil. Use a soil test to find its current pH and get amendment guidance. UConn’s hydrangea guidance recommends testing, and UMass notes that the amount needed depends on current pH and soil type.
  3. Choose an amendment only if the test supports it. Acidifying amendments such as sulfur or aluminum sulfate can lower pH; aluminum sulfate also supplies aluminum. Follow the soil-test recommendations and product label rather than applying a generic dose.
  4. Allow for uncertainty. Soil adjustment is not an instant flower treatment. The eventual color depends on the cultivar and on soil pH, aluminum, and phosphorus as well as the amendment used.

How do I turn blue hydrangeas pink?

To favor pink in a responsive bigleaf or mountain hydrangea, the aim is generally to raise soil pH so aluminum becomes less available. Lime or limestone is used to raise pH, but test first and follow the soil-test recommendation and label directions. The required amount varies with soil conditions, so there is no reliable universal dose.

Too much lime can cause yellowing in new growth through iron deficiency, according to UMass Extension. Make measured changes based on test results rather than adding amendment repeatedly in pursuit of a particular shade.

Can I change a white hydrangea to blue?

Not reliably. Some bigleaf cultivars remain white, and white flowers do not necessarily respond to soil pH in the way color-capable pink or blue cultivars do. Check the cultivar before attempting a color change; soil amendments cannot override a genetic limit.

What soil pH do hydrangeas need to turn blue?

For most bigleaf hydrangeas, UMass Extension gives below pH 5.5 as an approximate condition for blue flowers. Arkansas Extension describes pH 5 to 5.5 as tending blue. These ranges are not a promise: cultivar, available aluminum, phosphorus, and the starting soil all affect the outcome.

Use a soil test to determine whether adjustment is appropriate. Aluminum sulfate can injure plants if overused, while excessive lime can trigger iron deficiency. Follow local test recommendations and the product label; do not infer a dose from pH alone.
