If you have a common moth orchid (Phalaenopsis), the advice below gives a practical starting point; other orchids can need different light, moisture, and temperature conditions.
Start by identifying your orchid
Orchids are a large, varied group, and their care requirements differ. If the plant came with a label, keep it; if not, compare its flowers and leaves with reliable plant references or ask an orchid specialist. The American Orchid Society emphasizes that knowing which orchid you grow is key to choosing suitable conditions (American Orchid Society orchid care).
Until you identify it, avoid applying one species’ care routine to every orchid. The Phalaenopsis guidance below is specifically for moth orchids, a common indoor type.
How often should you water an orchid?
Water when the growing medium is approaching dryness, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. The interval varies with the medium, pot, season, temperature, humidity, and light, so a fixed weekly schedule can leave one plant too wet and another too dry. The American Orchid Society warns that “More orchids are killed by incorrect watering than by any other reason” (American Orchid Society general orchid care).

- Upgraded 4-Ingredient Formula: Our orchid bark potting mix features an improved formula, replacing coco peat with pumice for better aeration and a more stable structure. Fine perlite has been replaced with chunky perlite to enhance drainage and reduce compaction. Ingredient ratios have been adjusted to create a well-balanced mix of forest moss, pine bark, pumice and chunky perlite for balanced moisture, better drainage and more airflow around orchid roots.
- Pre-Mixed & Ready To Use: DUSPRO orchid potting mix for repotting combines forest moss, pine bark, pumice and chunky perlite in one ready-to-use blend. No need to purchase, measure or mix separate ingredients. Available in 6 sizes: 1, 2, 4, 6, 10 and 20 Quarts dry volume for a single orchid, multiple pots or a larger collection. Any leftover mix can be stored for future repotting. Note: THE PRODUCT DOESN'T INCLUDE THE POT.
- Better Drainage & More Root Airflow: With a size range of 1–4 cm, pine bark mulch supports drainage and helps create open spaces within the mix. Pumice contributes to aeration and moisture balance, while chunky perlite, with its porous and airy structure, helps keep the mix well aerated. This orchid soil for repotting creates more space around the roots and is well suited for use in clear, slotted or ventilated orchid pots.
- Balanced Moisture: Forest moss helps maintain moisture within the mix. Orchid roots need an airy growing medium that also retains enough moisture, so balancing airflow and moisture is essential for an ideal orchid mix. The four ingredients work together to reduce the dense, water-holding conditions that can develop as older orchid media break down. All ingredients are fumigated and phytosanitary licensed before export to the USA, supporting a clean, prepared growing medium for orchid repotting.
- Versatile Use: DUSPRO orchid potting mix supports various orchid varieties, including Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Vanda, Miltonia, Dendrobium and Cymbidium, as well as other potted orchids that benefit from an airy bark-based mix.
Check the medium before watering
Assess the surface and interior of the medium, the pot’s weight, or a wooden stake or skewer inserted into it. These clues help you judge whether the roots are still surrounded by moisture. When the medium is nearing dryness, water copiously so it runs through the pot’s drainage holes.
For Phalaenopsis, treat “about once a week” as a starting point
The Royal Horticultural Society suggests light watering about once a week for moth orchids, but the plant’s actual drying rate should guide adjustments. Do not let Phalaenopsis roots dry completely or sit in water. Tip away water collected in a saucer, avoid splashing the leaves, and do not leave water standing in the crown (the center where the leaves meet) (RHS guide to growing Phalaenopsis).

- This orchid potting mix provides quick drainage for epiphytic Orchids, which require good air movement and drier conditions between waterings
- For use with indoor epiphytic Orchids, including Phalaenopsis (moth orchids), Cattleya, Epidendrum, and Dendrobium
- Simply add this ready-to-use potting medium to containers; this mix creates an ideal environment for orchids without mixing or amending
- Bundle includes 2 bags of Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix for Orchids; each 8-qt. bag fills five 6-inch containers (amount may vary by root ball size)
Choose a bright position suited to the orchid
Light affects growth and flowering, but the right exposure depends on the orchid. For Phalaenopsis, choose a bright spot away from direct sun. Too little light can inhibit flowering, while another orchid type may have different needs; do not assume that a position suitable for one genus will suit them all (RHS Phalaenopsis guidance; AOS general care guidance).
Use an airy medium and a pot that drains
Most orchids need a purpose-made growing medium rather than ordinary garden soil. Their roots can suffer if the medium stays wet for too long, so drainage and the medium’s drying behavior matter. Choose a mix that suits the orchid and your home conditions, as well as how often you can check and water it (American Orchid Society repotting guidance).

- MULTI-PURPOSE FORMULA FOR ALL EPIPHYTIC ORCHIDS: Specially developed for growing a wide range of orchids, including Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobiums, Paphiopedilums, and Oncidiums
- OPTIMAL ROOT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: A dynamic blend of western fir bark, hardwood charcoal, and sponge rock promotes healthy root growth; coarse perlite and bark nuggets provide the ideal environment for root development
- DRAINAGE AND AIR FLOW FOR THRIVING ORCHIDS: This mix ensures excellent drainage and airflow, mimicking orchids' natural habitat; sponge rock and coarse perlite aid in water retention while allowing for proper ventilation
- EASY REPOTTING WITH RESEALABLE BAG: Ideal mix for repotting your orchids every 12-18 months to support healthy growth; comes in a convenient resealable bag in two sizes, 8 Dry Quarts (8.8L) and 4 Dry Quarts (4.4L), for sustained health and growth
For Phalaenopsis, the RHS recommends bark-based orchid compost in a transparent container. A pot should fit the plant without being oversized: too much medium around the roots can remain wet longer than needed (RHS guide to growing Phalaenopsis).
When should you repot an orchid?
Repot when the growing medium has broken down or the plant has outgrown its container. AOS gives yearly or every-other-year repotting as a general pattern, not a rule for every plant; the RHS says moth orchids may need repotting when overgrown or after about two years in the same compost. Check the plant and medium rather than treating either interval as automatic (AOS repotting guidance; RHS Phalaenopsis guidance).

When repotting, use an appropriately sized container with drainage and fresh orchid medium suited to the plant. Avoid moving an orchid into a much larger pot simply to allow for future growth, since the extra medium may stay damp around the roots.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Feed lightly, and account for the orchid’s growth cycle
Fertilizer can support growth, but it is not a bloom switch. The appropriate product and schedule depend on the orchid and its growing medium. The AOS recommends diluted fertilizer and notes that some orchids rest in winter; reduce or pause feeding as appropriate for the plant’s type and growth cycle (AOS general orchid care guidance).

Its efficient aeration and humidity-regulating capabilities make it a multi-purpose growing medium for different plant needs
Balance humidity and airflow
Humidity needs differ among orchids, and a humidifier is not necessary for every home. Some types benefit from higher humidity, while moving air can help limit problems associated with stagnant, damp conditions. Consider the plant’s identity and the room’s conditions together rather than treating humidity as a single number or a universal equipment requirement (AOS orchid care overview; AOS general care guidance).
