Lavender is most likely to struggle in winter when its roots stay cold and wet. Give in-ground plants sun and fast-draining soil, protect them only when local conditions call for it, and wait until spring growth appears before removing winter damage. Potted lavender needs a separate plan because its roots experience bigger temperature swings and dry out faster than roots in the ground.

Start with the lavender type and your local winter

Winter hardiness depends on the lavender and the growing conditions, so a hardiness-zone recommendation is not a guarantee for every garden or microclimate. In its Iowa guidance, Iowa State University Extension identifies English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) as reliably winter hardy to USDA Zone 5 when planted in a protected location with well-drained soil. It lists Munstead, Hidcote, Blue Cushion, and Royal Velvet as relatively hardy compact cultivars. Those recommendations are specific to Iowa conditions; check local guidance and plant labels for your area. Iowa State University Extension

Spanish lavender (Lavandula stoechas) is not winter hardy in Iowa and is typically treated there as an annual or grown in a container that can be overwintered indoors. Lavandin is less cold-hardy than English lavender, although Iowa State notes that Phenomenal has improved cold and humidity tolerance compared with older cultivars. Illinois Extension also favors English lavender and lavandin for Midwest gardens and names Hidcote and Munstead as popular English cultivars. These regional recommendations should not be read as universal survival guarantees. Illinois Extension

Prepare in-ground lavender for winter

Prioritize sun and drainage

Choose a full-sun site with very well-drained soil. Illinois Extension identifies dampness, rather than cold alone, as a common cause of lavender losses. Heavy or poorly drained soil can lead to root rot and winter loss; if water tends to linger, move the plant or improve drainage with a raised bed or berm. Rock or pea-gravel mulch can help keep the crown dry. Illinois Extension and Iowa State University Extension

Use winter mulch selectively

In cold regions, a light layer of straw or evergreen boughs can help protect an in-ground plant, but timing and placement matter. Apply it only after the ground has frozen and the plant is dormant, and avoid heavy, moisture-holding material piled against the crown. Illinois Extension describes winter mulch for cold growing areas after the ground initially freezes; Iowa State likewise recommends a light layer rather than heavy mulch. Illinois Extension and Iowa State University Extension

Choose an overwintering plan for potted lavender

Container roots have less insulation than roots in the ground, face greater temperature swings, and dry out faster. There is no single outdoor-versus-sheltered rule that applies everywhere: local winter conditions, lavender type, pot size, and drainage all affect the choice. University of Maryland Extension

  • Keep the container draining: Make sure drainage holes are unobstructed and empty water from the saucer so roots are not left sitting in it. Pot feet or risers may help keep holes clear, but they do not provide frost protection. University of Maryland Extension
  • Use an unheated shelter where appropriate: Colorado State Extension guidance relayed by Ask Extension recommends moving container plants to an unheated garage or cold frame after several hard frosts. A straw-bale enclosure covered with sturdy row-cover fabric is another option. The same guidance suggests giving the pot a drink about once a month on a warm day to prevent excessive root drying. These are options for a cold-region setup, not a guarantee for every plant or climate. Ask Extension
  • Consider outdoor overwintering only in a suitable regional setup: A University of Arkansas Extension response says a sufficiently large, well-drained container may remain outdoors in its regional context, with a sheltered location as another option. That 2018 advice is not a universal recommendation for colder or wetter regions. University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service

Wait for spring growth before pruning

Do not cut lavender back aggressively in fall. Wait until new growth appears in spring, then remove dead or damaged portions cautiously. Lavender is a woody sub-shrub and may not regrow readily from old wood, so avoid cutting deeply into bare woody stems. The timing of spring growth varies by location; use the plant’s growth rather than a fixed calendar date as your cue.
