Choose cargo straps by matching the restraint method, rated capacity, length, fittings and anchor points to the load—not by choosing the strap with the biggest advertised number. The full system is only as strong as its weakest rated component, and the rules for commercial vehicle securement are not a universal formula for every private or construction use.
Start with the load and how it must be restrained
Before buying, identify what you are securing, where it will travel, and how the strap will hold it. A strap used over a load to prevent movement is not necessarily interchangeable with one used for direct lashing or frictional lashing. Cargo shape, weight, likely movement, vehicle or trailer layout, and available anchor points all affect the choice.
- Load: Know its weight and whether its shape or surface creates sharp edges or abrasion points.
- Restraint method: Decide whether the strap will pass over the load, connect directly between load and anchor points, or provide frictional restraint.
- Anchor points: Confirm the vehicle or trailer has suitable attachment points in the locations your method requires.
- Rules: Check requirements for the jurisdiction, vehicle and cargo. Requirements for U.S. commercial motor vehicles are not automatically the rules for a private trailer or another country.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) describes tiedowns as one option among several for securing cargo and requires cargo in covered contexts to be secured against movement. Cargo-specific rules may add requirements. See the FMCSA cargo-securement rules.
Compare ratings across the whole system
Use the working rating, not breaking strength alone
Working load limit (WLL) and breaking strength are different figures. Breaking strength describes the force at which equipment fails under specified conditions; it is not the allowable working capacity to use as a securement rating. Check the strap’s marked WLL or the rating applicable to your jurisdiction and lashing method.

Check every link, including the anchor
Under 49 CFR § 393.108, for covered U.S. commercial motor-vehicle securement, a tiedown, connector or attachment mechanism is limited by the lowest-rated component or anchor point, whichever is lower. A high-rated strap cannot raise the capacity of a weaker ratchet, hook, connector or anchor.
For the covered U.S. cargo-securement rules, the aggregate WLL must be at least one-half the cargo weight. That is a regulatory calculation, not a consumer shortcut: the contribution of tiedowns depends on their routing and attachment, and other requirements can apply. Consult the FMCSA rules for your situation rather than dividing cargo weight by an advertised breaking-strength number.

Match strap length, fittings and ratchet to the job
Length and end fittings
Measure the route the strap will actually take, including the distance to the anchor points and the path around or over the load. Choose a length that reaches without improvised extensions or awkward connections. Match hooks or other end fittings to the anchor points; a fitting that does not seat securely can undermine the system even when the webbing has a suitable rating.
Ratchet operation
Check that the ratchet can be positioned, operated and secured in the space available, and that it is compatible with the strap assembly. For UK goods-vehicle guidance, the Department for Transport says to lock the ratchet once the correct tension has been applied. Do not assume that tightening as hard as possible is appropriate; use the tension required by the restraint method and applicable guidance.

Read the label for the applicable rating and method
Labels use terms that vary by jurisdiction and lashing method. UK Department for Transport guidance identifies lashing capacity (LC) for direct lashing and standard tension force (STF) for frictional lashing. It also says straps should carry manufacturing information and indicate manufacture to BS EN 12195-2. These terms should not be treated as interchangeable with U.S. WLL rules. Check the label and use the rating that applies to your method and location.
The UK guidance also notes that the number of straps needed for frictional lashing depends on factors including load restraint, friction and strap angle. A label rating by itself does not tell you how many straps a particular load requires. Read the Department for Transport’s guidance on securing loads.

Protect contact points and inspect equipment
Webbing that bears against a sharp or abrasive cargo edge can be cut or worn. Use suitable edge protection wherever contact could damage the strap; the FMCSA rules call for protection when a tiedown could be cut or abraded at a contact point. Make sure the protector stays in position and does not create a new slipping or fitting problem.
Before use, check the webbing, stitching, ratchet, hooks and other fittings. FMCSA rules require securement equipment in covered use to be in proper working order and free of damage or weakening that could adversely affect performance. Do not use a strap assembly if damage could compromise it.

Buying checklist
- Identify the load, route, restraint method and applicable rules.
- Choose a marked WLL or lashing rating appropriate to that method and jurisdiction; do not substitute breaking strength.
- Check the ratings of the strap, ratchet, connectors, hooks and anchor points as a complete system.
- Measure the strap path and match its length and end fittings to the cargo and anchors.
- Confirm the ratchet can be tensioned and secured correctly for the setup.
- Plan for edge protection and reject equipment with damage or weakening that could impair performance.
