Match the care method to the exact material, surface finish, and maker’s instructions. Natural stone, handmade Saltillo terracotta tile, and woven rugs do not share one safe cleaner or maintenance schedule: the wrong liquid, chemical, or tool can leave residue, scratch a surface, or damage a finish.
Identify the material and finish before cleaning
Start by finding the product name, material, finish, and any installation or care paperwork. A surface described as handmade clay may be a porous Saltillo tile, a sealed or top-coated tile, or an entirely different clay object. The guidance below for handmade clay applies specifically to Saltillo terracotta tile covered by Clay Imports’ care instructions; it should not be applied automatically to pottery or every clay finish.

“Woven finish” is not a precise material description either. A woven area rug, upholstered fabric, and woven wallcovering can have different fibers, dyes, backings, and finishes. This guide covers woven rugs only where the care label permits the method. If you cannot identify the item or find its instructions, ask the maker or a qualified cleaner before applying water or chemicals.
Before cleaning, look for more than a broad material label. For stone, composition affects how the surface responds to acids. For clay tile, porosity and any sealer or top coat affect cleaning and water absorption. For a rug, the label determines whether machine washing is allowed and specifies the appropriate temperature and detergent. A product name, installation paperwork, or care label is more useful than guessing from color or appearance.

| Surface | Routine approach supported by the maker or care authority | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Natural stone | Remove dry grit frequently; clean with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water; rinse and dry. (Natural Stone Institute) | Stone composition and finish matter. Acids can etch susceptible stone, and sealing does not make stone stain-proof. |
| Handmade Saltillo terracotta tile | Sweep, dust, or vacuum regularly; use gentle damp cleaning with warm water and a mild pH-neutral cleaner. (Clay Imports) | Instructions are specific to the maker’s cited tile products and do not establish care for every clay surface or sealer. |
| Woven area rug | Machine-wash only if the label says the rug is machine-washable, following its temperature and detergent directions. (Carpet and Rug Institute) | Imported or specialty rugs may require maker-directed or professional cleaning; guidance is not established for every fiber or woven object. |
When comparing care methods, use five questions: What is the material composition and porosity? What finish or sealer is present? Does the maker allow water, detergent, or machine washing? Are you dealing with grit, a spill, a stain, an etch, or a fiber-specific concern? Is this routine maintenance, or a repair that calls for a specialist? These distinctions matter more than choosing a cleaner based on a general label such as “natural,” “gentle,” or “for floors.”
Also separate preventive care from corrective work. Removing dry grit and cleaning a routine spill are maintenance. Refinishing etched stone is a repair. Deciding whether a Saltillo installation needs resealing depends on the particular product and sealer. Washing a rug is permitted only when its label says so. Treating all of these as ordinary cleaning can lead to a method that is unsuitable for the material.
How to clean natural stone without etching it
Remove grit before using water
Dust-mop frequently with a clean, non-treated dry mop. Grit is abrasive: leaving it underfoot or dragging it across the surface during wet cleaning can scratch stone. Start with dry removal before introducing a damp mop or cloth. This simple order matters because a wet cleaning pass can move loose particles around instead of removing them cleanly.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a mop that is clean and non-treated, rather than one carrying an unknown treatment or residue. The aim is to pick up dry soil before cleaning, not to polish the surface or add another product. How often to dust-mop depends on how quickly grit accumulates in the space; the Natural Stone Institute’s guidance is to do it frequently, not to follow a fixed interval for every home.
Use a mild cleaner, then rinse and dry
- Remove loose dust and grit with the dry mop.
- For routine cleaning, use warm water with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or mild liquid dishwashing detergent, as recommended by the Natural Stone Institute. Use only enough cleaner to do the job; excess product can leave film or streaks.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Change the rinse water when it becomes dirty so you do not spread soil or cleaner residue back over the stone.
- Dry the surface with a soft cloth.
Do not assume that a household cleaner is compatible because it is marketed as a floor cleaner. Check that its label permits use on the exact stone and finish. Avoid abrasive powders, which may scratch. A neutral cleaner is one supported option, not permission to use any product that happens to be described as mild. Stone composition and finish still need to be considered.
Rinsing is not an optional finishing touch. Cleaner left behind can make the surface look streaky or filmed, and using increasingly large amounts of product can make that problem worse. If the rinse water is visibly dirty, replace it instead of continuing with the same water. Then dry with a soft cloth rather than leaving a soapy or wet film in place.
Blot spills promptly
For a spill, blot it as soon as possible rather than wiping outward, which can spread the liquid. Then flush or rinse the area with water and mild soap and dry it. Use coasters and trivets where appropriate to reduce direct contact with items that could mark or damage the surface.

Blotting and routine washing serve different purposes. Blot first to contain a fresh spill; after that, rinse the affected area and dry it. This sequence avoids spreading the liquid while still removing residue. Coasters and trivets are useful preventive measures in places where drinks, hot items, or other potentially damaging objects may contact stone.

Keep acids away from susceptible stone
Stone composition matters. The Natural Stone Institute distinguishes calcareous stone, which is acid-sensitive, from generally more acid-resistant siliceous stone. It still does not recommend acidic cleaners for siliceous stone. Do not use vinegar or lemon products on calcareous stone: acid can dull or etch the finish. Avoid treating a product as safe simply because it is described as natural.
An acidic spill can damage a susceptible finish even when it does not leave a stain. That is why a dull spot should not automatically be scrubbed harder or treated with a stain remover. The important first decision is whether the mark is soil or a change to the finish. If you do not know the stone’s composition, do not rely on a guess about acid resistance; ask the stone supplier.
Tell an etch from a stain
A stain is not the same as an etch. Some substances damage the finish without leaving a stain, so a discolored or dull area is not necessarily something that can be lifted with stain treatment. The Natural Stone Institute recommends contacting a stone dealer or professional restorer for refinishing or repolishing etched areas. There is no universal do-it-yourself abrasive or chemical treatment for every stone and finish.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This distinction helps prevent a second round of damage. A stain is a mark from material on or in the stone; an etch is damage to the finish. A cleaning product aimed at removing a stain may not restore an etched surface, and abrasive attempts to make it look even can scratch the stone. If the area looks dull after contact with an acidic material, describe what happened to a stone dealer or restorer rather than assuming a stronger cleaner is the answer.
What sealing does—and does not—do
Do not treat sealer as a guarantee against stains. The Natural Stone Institute says, “Sealing does not make the stone stain proof, rather it makes it more resistant to staining.” Some stones may not need sealing at all. Whether a particular stone should be sealed, which sealer is suitable, and how often to apply it are questions for the stone supplier and sealer maker, not a universal calendar.
For food-preparation areas, confirm that the sealer is identified as non-toxic and safe for that use. A sealer intended for a different surface or application should not be assumed suitable. Follow the product maker’s instructions and confirm compatibility with the particular stone and finish before applying anything.
Does handmade Saltillo tile need to be resealed?
Not on a fixed calendar established for every installation. Clay Imports describes its Saltillo terracotta as porous and notes that its surface appearance changes over time. Its guidance says resealing needs depend on traffic, environment, and the appearance the owner wants; it does not provide one universal interval. Follow the instructions for your particular tile and sealer rather than applying a generic annual or multi-year schedule.
That means two owners should not assume that their installations need attention at the same time simply because both are called Saltillo. The product, sealer, amount of traffic, environment, and preferred appearance all matter. A calendar interval without those details can prompt unnecessary resealing or fail to address the needs of a particular installation. Check the tile maker’s directions and the sealer’s label before deciding.

Routine cleaning for the cited Saltillo products
- Sweep, dust, or vacuum regularly to remove loose dirt.
- For damp cleaning, use warm water and a mild pH-neutral cleaner with a soft cloth or mop.
- Clean spills promptly and remove cleaner residue rather than leaving it on the tile.
For the products covered by Clay Imports’ guidance, avoid bleach, ammonia, acidic cleaners, and abrasive tools. These are maker-specific instructions, not a guarantee that the same method suits every terracotta tile, coating, or unsealed installation. Check both the tile and sealer instructions before selecting a cleaning product.
Keep routine cleaning gentle. The maker’s directions call for a soft cloth or mop, so do not substitute a scouring or abrasive tool to speed up the job. If cleaner remains on the surface, remove the residue rather than letting it dry there. If the instructions for your own tile differ, follow those instructions rather than generalizing from a similar-looking floor.
Use the maker’s absorption check as an indicator, not a schedule
Clay Imports describes a water-beading or absorption check as an indicator that resealing may be due. Treat that as a product-maker check for its tile, not a universal test for all clay floors. Confirm the result against your tile and sealer instructions before applying more sealer. A water response alone does not establish which product is compatible or how it should be applied.
The check can help prompt a closer look at the product guidance; it does not replace that guidance. Porosity, existing coating, and sealer instructions still matter. If you are unsure whether the test applies to your installation, contact the maker or sealer supplier before resealing. Do not infer from a single water response that every terracotta surface needs the same treatment.
Can you wash a woven rug at home?
Only when the rug’s own label says machine washing is allowed. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) advises washing a small rug only if it is labeled machine-washable and following the stated water-temperature and detergent directions. A rug’s size or woven construction by itself is not evidence that it can safely go in a washing machine.
Check the label before choosing a wash method, and follow its specific temperature and detergent directions rather than substituting a preferred product or cycle. The permission to machine-wash is conditional: it comes from the label, not from the fact that the item is a rug. If the label does not say it is machine-washable, the CRI guidance does not support putting it in the machine.
For imported or specialty rugs
CRI advises following the carpet maker’s specifications for imported rugs or using a professional cleaning service. Check the maker’s instructions before applying water, detergent, or another chemical. If the label does not authorize washing, do not soak the rug or improvise a cleaning recipe.

Do not transfer rug instructions to other woven objects
The available guidance does not establish fiber-specific methods for wool, cotton, jute, or sisal, nor instructions for woven upholstery or wallcoverings. Fiber, dye, backing, and finish can all affect what care is appropriate. For those objects, use the item’s label and maker’s directions; if they are missing or unclear, consult a cleaner who handles that specific type of textile.
In particular, “woven” is not enough information to prescribe water, detergent, or a cleaning chemical. A method permitted for one rug cannot automatically be transferred to another rug, upholstery, or a wallcovering. When an item has no readable label, pause before wet cleaning or applying chemicals and seek instructions from its maker or a qualified specialist.

A pH-neutral cleaner is supported for the cited Saltillo tile and is one of the neutral-cleaner options in Natural Stone Institute guidance. That does not make any one product automatically safe for every stone, tile, finish, or sealer. Read the cleaner label and verify compatibility with the exact surface and protective coating. The rug guidance does not establish that a stone or tile cleaner is suitable for woven materials.

A cleaner suited to the cited Saltillo products is not thereby approved for every clay installation. Likewise, a stone-care product is not a woven-rug detergent.
A soft cloth or mop is appropriate for the cited damp-cleaning methods, but the core requirement is the right tool and product for the surface, not a special purchase. For stone, avoid abrasive powders and remove grit before wet cleaning. For Saltillo tile covered by the maker’s instructions, avoid abrasive tools. For woven items, do not apply a cleaning chemical unless the item’s care directions permit it.
Good maintenance does not require buying a specialized tool for every material. A clean, non-treated dry mop helps remove stone grit; a soft cloth or mop suits the cited damp-cleaning guidance. The key is not to add a tool or product that conflicts with the surface instructions. When in doubt, use the label and supplier guidance rather than experimenting on the finish.
When to stop routine cleaning and get specialist help
- Stone looks dull after contact with an acidic substance: it may be an etch rather than a stain. Ask a stone dealer or professional restorer about refinishing or repolishing instead of trying a universal DIY treatment.
- Stone has a persistent spill mark: identify the stone and finish and seek advice from the stone supplier or a qualified professional if mild cleaning does not resolve it. Stain and finish damage are different problems.
- Saltillo tile appears to absorb water rather than bead: treat the maker’s check as a reason to consult the tile and sealer instructions, not as proof that a particular sealer or schedule is right.
- A rug has no readable care label, is imported, or is described as specialty: consult its maker or a professional rug cleaner before washing or applying chemicals.
- You cannot identify the material or finish: do not start with an all-purpose cleaner or a wet-cleaning experiment. Ask the supplier or maker to identify the surface and permitted care method.
Specialist help is most useful when the issue is no longer ordinary soil: an etched stone surface may need refinishing or repolishing, and an imported rug may need maker-directed or professional cleaning. Getting advice early can prevent a cleaning attempt from turning a repair into a larger finish problem.

Care depends on what is actually installed
For everyday upkeep, the most reliable sequence is to identify the exact surface, remove loose grit where appropriate, use only a maker-approved mild method, and stop before a cleaning task becomes a finish repair. Natural stone needs protection from abrasion and acid-sensitive cleaners; the cited Saltillo instructions call for gentle damp care and product-specific sealer guidance; woven rugs require label-led washing decisions. When the material, finish, or permission to use water is uncertain, confirm it before cleaning.

Think of the three categories as different care decisions rather than variations on one household cleaning routine. Stone needs frequent dry grit removal, careful mild cleaning, rinsing, and drying; a dull acid-damaged patch may be an etch. The Saltillo advice applies to the specific handmade terracotta products and directs owners to their tile and sealer instructions. A rug belongs in a washing machine only when its label permits it. These limits are part of safe care, not exceptions to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean natural stone without etching it?
Remove grit first with a clean, non-treated dry mop. Clean with warm water and a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or mild liquid dishwashing detergent; use only enough cleaner to do the job, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid acidic products such as vinegar or lemon on calcareous stone, and do not use abrasive powders.
Is a dull mark on stone a stain or an etch?
It may be an etch, especially if the stone became dull after contact with an acidic substance. Some materials damage the finish without leaving a stain. A stone dealer or professional restorer can advise on refinishing or repolishing; there is no universal DIY abrasive or chemical treatment.
Does sealing make natural stone stain-proof?
No. The Natural Stone Institute says sealing makes stone more resistant to staining, not stain-proof. Some stones may not need sealing. Ask the stone supplier and sealer maker whether your stone should be sealed and how often; for food-preparation areas, use only a sealer identified as non-toxic and safe for that use.
Does handmade Saltillo tile need to be resealed?
There is no universal resealing calendar. Clay Imports says timing depends on traffic, environment, and desired appearance, and describes a water-beading or absorption check as an indicator for its tile. Confirm the result and next steps with your specific tile and sealer instructions.
Can I use vinegar or lemon to clean stone?
Do not use them on calcareous stone: acids can dull or etch its finish. The Natural Stone Institute also does not recommend acidic cleaners for siliceous stone, even though it is generally more acid-resistant. Use a compatible neutral cleaner or mild cleaning method instead.
Can I wash a woven rug at home?
Only machine-wash a small rug if its own label says it is machine-washable, and follow the label’s temperature and detergent directions. For imported or specialty rugs, follow the carpet maker’s specifications or use a professional cleaning service. Do not assume the same care applies to upholstery or wallcoverings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat if I cannot identify the finish or find a care label?
Pause before applying water, detergent, or chemicals. Ask the maker or supplier for the permitted method. For a rug, especially an imported or specialty one, consult its maker or a professional cleaner rather than improvising.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact material, finish, and care instructions before cleaning. Remove stone grit dry, use mild compatible cleaning and rinse well; keep acids away from susceptible stone. For the cited Saltillo tile, follow the tile and sealer maker’s directions rather than a fixed resealing calendar. Machine-wash a woven rug only when its label permits it.
