For healthy adults in temperate conditions, the U.S. National Academies’ reference intake is 3.7 liters of total water a day for men and 2.7 liters for women. Those figures include water in food and all beverages—not just plain water—and are population benchmarks, not personal prescriptions.
What counts as water intake?
“Total water” includes plain water, other beverages, and moisture in food. In U.S. dietary data reviewed by the National Academies, food supplied about 19% of total water intake. Its adult reference figures translate to about 3.0 liters a day from beverages for men and 2.2 liters for women; the rest generally comes from food. These are averages, not a requirement to drink that amount of plain water. National Academies, Dietary Reference Intakes for Water
Use the right reference for your life stage
The National Academies’ 2005 adequate-intake table gives these total-water reference values. Adequate intake is a population reference, not a minimum or individualized target.
| Group | Total water per day | What the figure includes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult men | 3.7 L | Food and all beverages; about 3.0 L from beverages |
| Adult women | 2.7 L | Food and all beverages; about 2.2 L from beverages |
| Adult women during pregnancy | 3.0 L | Total water |
| Adult women during lactation | 3.8 L | Total water |
| Children and adolescents | Varies by age and sex | Use the age-specific value in the National Academies table |

How to estimate what you need
- Start with the closest reference. If an age- or life-stage value applies, use it as a starting point—not as a precise personal calculation.
- Count beverages and food. Water, milk, and sugar-free drinks such as tea and coffee contribute to fluid intake, as do water-containing foods. NHS: Water, drinks and hydration
- Consider conditions that increase losses. Physical activity and hot conditions can raise water needs. Fever, vomiting, and diarrhea can also increase fluid needs, according to the CDC. Severe illness or being unable to keep fluids down may require medical assessment.
- Adjust sensibly rather than chasing a precise formula. The National Academies says variation in activity and environment prevents one intake level from ensuring adequate hydration for everyone. A bottle can make water easier to access during the day, but it does not calculate your needs.
When a general estimate is not appropriate
If a clinician has prescribed a fluid restriction, or you have a significant medical condition, follow your care team’s advice rather than using a population reference to set a target. The general references above do not provide disease-specific amounts.
Persistent, unexplained excessive thirst should not automatically be treated as a sign that you simply need to drink more. The NHS notes possible causes including diabetes, anaemia, and medicines; seek clinical advice if it continues. NHS: Excessive thirst

Why not drink as much as possible?
More water is not always safer. The National Academies report describes a maximal kidney water excretion rate of approximately 0.7–1.0 liters per hour and acute water toxicity after rapid consumption greatly exceeding that rate. This is not a recommended drinking pace; it is a warning against consuming very large amounts quickly. National Academies, water chapter
