To build a window garden, choose a bright window, match compact edible plants to its light, and set them in containers with drainage holes and quality potting mix. Water according to each plant’s needs rather than a fixed schedule. If natural light is inadequate, supplemental lighting is an option.
Choose the spot before choosing plants
Light is often the main constraint for growing edible plants indoors. Check how many hours of direct sunlight reach the windowsill or window box, and choose crops suited to those conditions. Penn State Extension says most herbs need about six hours of direct sunlight; the requirement varies by crop. See Penn State Extension’s indoor herb guidance.
Rotate containers periodically so plants receive light more evenly. If the window is too dim, a grow light can supplement natural light. Penn State Extension describes fluorescent lighting as an alternative for indoor herbs; follow the guidance for the specific crop and light setup.
Pick compact crops that fit the light and space
Herbs
Basil, chives, cilantro, parsley, and thyme are practical indoor options. Their growing conditions and watering needs differ, so check the seed packet or plant label before planting. A bright windowsill may suit one herb better than another.

Loose-leaf lettuce
Loose-leaf lettuce can also grow in a window-side container when its light, space, and watering needs are met. Illinois Extension offers examples of indoor herbs and lettuce in its indoor growing guidance.
Choose a container and growing medium
Use a pot or window box large enough for the plant’s roots, with drainage holes at the bottom. Excess water needs a way out: waterlogged growing medium can limit the oxygen available to roots. Penn State Extension explains this in its container vegetable gardening guidance.

Use quality potting mix made for containers, not garden soil. Illinois Extension recommends potting mix for container growing in its indoor herb and lettuce guidance. Set the container where excess water can drain without damaging the sill or surrounding surfaces.
Plant and care for the garden
- Prepare the container. Confirm that it has drainage holes, then fill it with quality potting mix.
- Sow seeds or add transplants. Follow the directions on the seed packet or plant label for planting depth and spacing.
- Place it in suitable light. Use the selected bright window, rotate the container periodically, and add supplemental lighting if natural light is insufficient.
- Check the mix before watering. Water when it begins to dry, adjusting for the crop and how quickly the container dries. Some herbs benefit from drying slightly between waterings, while basil should not dry out completely. Penn State Extension discusses these differences in its indoor herb guidance.
Choose soil or a contained hydroponic setup
A simple soil-based window garden uses pots or a window box, potting mix, and suitable natural or supplemental light. A countertop hydroponic system is a separate option: Illinois Extension describes contained units that include lighting and use water with nutrient solution. The choice depends on your available window or counter space, light, and whether you prefer potting mix or a system that supplies water and nutrients. Neither setup is established here as cheaper or more productive than the other.

A hydroponic unit is not required for a window garden. For a basic setup, a suitable draining container, potting mix, and plants matched to the available light are enough to get started.
