First identify the product: Charlotte Pipe warns that external heating can damage plumbing pipe and recommends fittings for changes in direction. For conduit, follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical requirements.
First, identify what kind of PVC you have
Rigid electrical conduit and plumbing pipe are not interchangeable for bending purposes. Westlake and IPEX provide heat-bending guidance for rigid conduit. Charlotte Pipe cautions that external heat may structurally damage PVC plumbing pipe and directs installers to use fittings for direction changes. Do not heat-bend plumbing pipe unless its manufacturer explicitly approves the method for that product.
For a plumbing run, choose an appropriate fitting—such as an elbow—rather than trying to soften and reshape the pipe. A conduit bender or bending blanket is not a plumbing-pipe solution.
How to bend rigid PVC conduit
Use the procedure only when the conduit maker’s instructions support the intended size and bend. The figures below come from Westlake and IPEX guidance for rigid conduit; they are not universal settings for every PVC formulation or wall thickness.

- Check the requirements. Confirm the conduit type, size, schedule, intended bend geometry, product instructions, and applicable local electrical requirements.
- Set up safely. Work on a flat, dry surface in a ventilated area, away from flammable materials. Use the appropriate power supply and GFCI protection when required by the bender manual, and wear heat-resistant gloves. Southwire specifies these precautions for its bender.
- Heat without a flame. Use a heat gun or another manufacturer-approved flameless source. Westlake states, “Do not use an open flame to heat the conduit”; IPEX also warns against open flames. The cited Westlake and IPEX instructions give approximately 260°F (127°C) as a bending temperature and call for heating an even length of about ten times the conduit’s nominal diameter. Treat these as product guidance, not a setting that automatically suits every conduit.
- Distribute heat evenly. Rotate the conduit as it warms and heat the full intended bend area. Uneven or insufficient heat can cause kinking. If using a dedicated bender, follow its manual for positioning and heating; Southwire notes that heating time depends on the tool and conditions, so its timing guidance should not be treated as universal.
- Form the bend gradually. Support the conduit as you shape it so the inside diameter and wall thickness remain intact. Avoid forcing a sharp bend into a section that is not uniformly pliable.
- Allow for spring-back and cool as directed. IPEX warns that cold air or water cooling can cause spring-back and advises allowing a few extra degrees of overbend. Westlake’s guide suggests about three extra degrees. Follow the conduit maker’s directions for cooling and geometry; do not assume the same allowance fits every product or bend.
How to avoid kinks and unsuitable bend radii
A kink or flattened section indicates the conduit did not retain its shape through the bend. Even heating, gradual forming, and support help protect the internal opening and wall, but the bend still has to suit the product and required geometry.
Do not combine different manufacturers’ radius figures into one universal rule. USESI says bends with an inside radius tighter than four pipe diameters are difficult to achieve without controlled manufacturing conditions. IPEX discusses a maximum-radius rule under Canadian and National Electrical Codes, while Westlake’s guide gives its own forming guidance. These are different measures and contexts. Check the applicable code and the conduit manufacturer’s requirements for the actual installation.

Tools for repeatable conduit bends
A dedicated PVC conduit bender is the direct tool match for field-forming rigid electrical conduit. Southwire describes its PVCB-02 as a Schedule 40/Schedule 80 PVC conduit bender and provides an operating manual. Select equipment only when its instructions cover your conduit size, schedule, and intended bend.
- Conduit bender: A purpose-built option for the conduit sizes and schedules listed by its maker. Follow that model’s manual, including setup, power, heating, and safety requirements.
- Bending blanket: Gardner Bender’s instructions cover particular blanket models and conduit dimensions, with different one-bend angle limits by model and size. Check those limits before use.
- Forming jig: For repeated bends, Southwire suggests a simple jig made from non-heat-conducting material. A jig can help reproduce a shape, but it does not replace the product’s bend limits or installation requirements.
For plumbing pipe, use fittings and the pipe manufacturer’s joining instructions instead of conduit-bending equipment.

When to stop and use another method
- The material is plumbing PVC and its manufacturer has not approved heat bending.
- The conduit maker’s instructions do not cover your product size, schedule, or required bend.
- The bend would be tighter than the product guidance or applicable code allows.
- The conduit begins to kink, flatten, or lose its internal opening while forming.
- You cannot heat and support the section evenly or meet the tool’s safety requirements.
