How to Build a Tiered Container Garden with Reclaimed Materials

A practical guide to building a stable tiered container garden from reclaimed materials, with clear precautions for vegetables, drainage, potting mix, and pallet wood.

Build a tiered container garden by choosing reclaimed containers that suit the plants, making a stable support, adding drainage and a way to retain potting mix, then filling and planting each tier. Decide first whether you are growing ornamentals or food: for vegetables and herbs, use materials with a known, clean history. An unknown container or pallet is not made safe for food simply by washing it.

How do I build a tiered container garden?

Think of the project as two parts: the containers that hold the growing medium and plants, and the structure that holds those containers at different heights. Reclaimed drawers, buckets, tubs, watering cans, baskets, crates, wagons, and sturdy furniture may all be candidates, provided they are sound and suitable for their intended use. A pallet garden is one option, not the only way to create tiers.

  1. Decide what to grow. Separate food production from ornamental use before selecting materials. For edible crops, favor clean containers with a known history and enough room for mature roots. Avoid anything that held toxic products.
  2. Inspect and clean the materials. Check for instability, sharp edges, cracks, rot, old coatings, residues, and a practical drainage route. Wash used containers with soapy water. Illinois Extension describes disinfecting with one part chlorine bleach to nine parts water, but cleaning does not establish safety if a container previously held hazardous chemicals (Illinois Extension).
  3. Choose the tiers and arrange them before filling. Put larger or heavier containers low where practical, leave room for plant canopies, and make sure every tier is reachable for watering and harvesting. Most plants need at least 6 to 8 inches of container depth, although crop requirements vary (Virginia Cooperative Extension).
  4. Build and place a stable support. Set crates, blocks, furniture, or containers on a firm, level surface and check for wobble. With a pallet, reinforce loose boards and pre-drill old wood when needed to help prevent splitting. The University of Saskatchewan describes leaning or mounting a pallet against a sturdy wall, shed, or fence; a freestanding version needs proper structural supports (University of Saskatchewan). The extension guidance does not supply load calculations for improvised structures, so do not assume a particular height or weight is safe without assessing the actual support and site.
  5. Put the garden near its final position. A pallet garden may be too heavy to move once filled and watered. A planted, moist 20-inch-diameter container can weigh up to 100 pounds, according to North Carolina State University Extension; that is an example, not a general weight for every planter (NC State Extension). If it must move, plan for a dolly or appropriately load-rated casters before filling.
  6. Provide drainage and retain the growing mix. Cover the back and bottom of a pallet with landscape fabric or burlap to help hold mix and plants in place, while preserving a path for excess water to escape. For wire or open-sided containers, liners such as moss, wood fiber, coir, or plastic can retain mix (University of Saskatchewan; Illinois Extension). Add holes to a container without drainage only if doing so will not weaken it or create a safety problem.
  7. Fill with container mix and plant. Use a soilless container mix rather than ordinary garden soil. For a pallet garden, moisten the mix until it feels like a wrung-out sponge; the University of Saskatchewan method fills the pallet rows while it is flat, then allows transplants to root and settle before raising it.
  8. Match plants to light and water access. Group plants with similar light, water, and nutrient needs. Leave every tier accessible, and check exposed upper tiers often because shallow or small containers can dry quickly.

What reclaimed containers are safe to use for vegetables?

For food crops, choose a container large enough for mature roots, able to hold its contents and drain adequately, with no history of holding substances toxic to plants or people. Virginia Cooperative Extension advises against wood treated with creosote or pentachlorophenol and discusses waterborne treated-wood alternatives (Virginia Cooperative Extension). A clean-looking surface cannot establish what a reclaimed item previously contained.

Reclaimed pallet guidance differs. The University of Saskatchewan recommends pallets marked “HT” (heat treated) for food production, warns against chemically treated pallets, and says to avoid unmarked, suspicious, or “MB”-marked pallets. A stamp identifies a treatment marking; it does not prove the pallet’s full use history. In contrast, UF/IFAS advises against secondhand lumber such as pallets for edible gardens (UF/IFAS Extension). If you cannot establish the wood’s history, the cautious choice is to reserve it for ornamentals or use it only as an outer support around a separate container made from known-suitable material. That arrangement is a risk-reduction approach, not a guarantee that a liner removes every possible risk.

Do planters need drainage holes?

Yes. Soil-filled containers need drainage so roots do not remain standing in water. If an item has no drainage, add holes where that can be done without compromising its strength or safety. For open-sided or pallet designs, a liner should retain the growing mix without sealing the planter into a waterlogged box. Check that water can escape after watering, including from containers nested inside a tier.

Can I use pallet wood for a vegetable planter?

Possibly, but the recommendations are not uniform. The University of Saskatchewan accepts identifiable HT-marked pallets while advising against chemically treated, unmarked, suspicious, or MB-marked pallets. UF/IFAS takes the more cautious position of advising against secondhand lumber for edible gardens. If the pallet’s history is unknown or the markings are unclear, do not treat it as suitable for vegetables; use it for ornamentals or as a support for a separate, known-suitable growing container instead.

For a pallet planter, the University of Saskatchewan guide describes covering the back and bottom with landscape fabric or burlap, filling it while flat, and waiting for transplants to root and stabilize before raising it. Secure it to a sturdy wall, shed, or fence, or provide proper supports if freestanding. Locate it near a water source: shallow pallet rows can dry quickly, and drip irrigation is an optional way to direct water to roots.

What soil should I put in a container garden?

Use a commercially available soilless potting mix, following its label, rather than filling pots with garden soil. NC State Extension cautions that garden soil can bring weed seeds, insects, or diseases and may drain poorly. Its suggested homemade alternative is equal parts compost, perlite, vermiculite, or coarse builder’s sand, and potting soil (NC State Extension).

Adjust the mix to the crop rather than assuming one recipe suits every plant. NC State notes that a mix can be adjusted to hold more water for thirsty crops, while herbs that prefer drier conditions benefit from perlite. Container materials also affect watering: wood and unglazed ceramic lose moisture faster than less porous materials, and small or dark containers tend to dry faster. Porous materials wick water, dark pots can heat in strong sun, and metal containers may experience larger temperature swings. NC State reports that metal-container media can fluctuate by as much as 30°F between day and night; this is a possible reported fluctuation, not a prediction for every metal pot (Illinois Extension; NC State Extension).

How should I choose plants and place the tiers?

Use local planting calendars for sowing and transplant dates; this project has no single schedule that works across regions. As general light guidance, NC State says most warm-season vegetables and fruits do best with six to eight hours of sun, while many herbs and cool-season crops tolerate partial shade. Virginia Cooperative Extension says fruiting vegetables generally need at least six hours of direct sun and perform better with eight to ten hours. Local climate, cultivar, season, and reflected heat affect the result.
