A safe, enjoyable sand pit starts with a sturdy frame, carefully chosen sand and a cover that keeps animals out. After play, rake the sand and let it dry fully if it gets wet before covering it. These steps reflect guidance from HealthyChildren.org, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Choose a safe place and a practical design
Pick a level spot where an adult can supervise play and reach the pit easily for cleaning. Shade and access to water are useful planning considerations; Kidsafe NSW includes both in its Australian sandpit guidance, which is not a U.S. regulation. Keep the design simple enough to cover, inspect and rake without difficulty.
A ground-level sandbox with no elevated play surface does not need protective surfacing under the CPSC’s home playground handbook. The handbook’s fall-protection recommendations for elevated playground equipment should not be used to decide how deep to fill the sandbox.
Build a sturdy frame
Use a sound frame with smooth edges and no protruding fasteners. The AAP’s “Safety in the Sandbox” advises against inexpensive railroad ties because they can splinter and may be saturated with creosote. It recommends nontoxic landscaping timbers or a non-wood container instead. Inspect the frame before filling and periodically afterward; repair loose parts or rough, damaged surfaces.

Choose sand carefully
The AAP article, last updated in 2012, recommends natural river or beach sand and advises avoiding crushed limestone, crushed marble, crushed crystalline silica and obviously dusty products. It also says the CPSC has no standards or labeling requirements for sand source or content. Treat that as the article’s dated guidance, not a guarantee about products currently on sale: a generic “play sand” label alone does not establish a product’s composition.
Before buying, read the current product documentation and check that it identifies the sand’s material and intended use. If those details are unclear, ask the seller or manufacturer rather than assuming the product is suitable. Do not rely on a product name to establish that sand is silica-free, tested or certified.

Cover and maintain the sand pit
Cover the pit whenever it is not in use and keep household pets out. The CDC advises covering sandboxes to help prevent cats from using them as litter boxes; a cover also helps keep debris and animals out.
- After play: Rake the sand regularly, removing debris, clumps and foreign material.
- If the sand gets wet: Let it dry thoroughly before covering it, as the AAP advises.
- Before play: Check the sand and frame for debris, damage or anything that should be removed before children use the pit.
- When choosing a cover: Select one that fits securely and that an adult can put on and remove without difficulty.
What to check when buying a ready-made sandbox
Compare options by how well they support safe construction and routine care, rather than by appearance alone.

What the safety figures do—and do not—say
The CPSC reports that more than 200,000 children go to U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year with injuries associated with playground equipment. Its checklist does not specify a year for that figure, and it is broad playground-equipment context—not a count of sandpit injuries. The cited guidance provides no sandpit-specific injury statistic.
