One documented approach suspends shaped treated-wood battens from smooth high-tensile wire or light cable. It is a site-dependent flood gate—not a guarantee against flood damage, blocked flow, or livestock loss.
How a flood gate for a farm fence works
The BC Ministry of Agriculture describes a suspended-batten gate as a self-cleaning device: it blocks animal movement at low water while allowing water to pass at peak flows. In this arrangement, treated-wood panels or battens are shaped to the watercourse and suspended from a double wrap of high-tensile smooth fence wire or light cable. The BC guidance says wide gates need the two line posts braced. It also describes an electric-fence option: woven wire attached with a flexible spring connector, electrified only during low water. These are distinct arrangements; the source does not specify a universal set of dimensions or structural ratings.
Choose a design that suits the watercourse
Before choosing a gate, consider how high and fast water rises, what debris moves through the channel, how stable the banks and bed are, the span, and the livestock and fence type. The USDA Wisconsin engineering guidance identifies channel size, flow volume and velocity, soil type, bed and bank stability, materials, maintenance, repair or replacement, simplicity, economics, and permits as relevant factors. Do not assume a conventional hinged cattle gate is flood-safe. The USDA guidance warns that debris may catch on a fixed support frame and calls for periodic inspection, including after high-water events.
Plan the build around the site, not a generic specification
The available guidance supports a construction concept, not a ready-to-build plan. It does not establish a standard span, wire gauge, post size, embedment depth, load rating, or performance in a particular flood. Those details depend on the site, including the watercourse, bank and bed conditions, expected flow, fence layout, and livestock.

- Check the crossing: Assess channel size, flow volume and velocity, the likely high-water elevation, soil, and bank and bed stability.
- Plan for debris: Consider whether the gate or its supports could collect branches or other material, how it can be cleared, and how the crossing will be inspected safely.
- Match the fence to the stock: Account for the animals and the existing or planned wire, electric, or wood fence. Consider whether stock could push through, open, or pass under the assembly.
- Check support and maintenance: Wide suspended gates need braced line posts in the BC design. Consider repair or replacement, regular inspection, and who will handle post-flood cleanup.
- Confirm approvals: Check applicable local, state, or federal permit requirements before work begins. The cited guidance does not establish requirements beyond its own jurisdictions.
High-tensile smooth fence wire is one source-listed material to investigate, not a universal purchase specification; the guidance gives no one-size-fits-all gauge or rating. For a site with uncertain flow or bank stability, ask a local fencing supplier, agricultural fencing contractor, or qualified professional to assess the installation.
Inspect and operate the gate safely
Plan for routine inspection and a check after high water. Look for damage, loosened supports, displaced battens, caught debris, or anything that could let cattle through or restrict flow. Do not clear an obstructed gate while floodwater is moving; use a safe approach after conditions allow.

After floodwater recedes, assess possible contamination before returning livestock to affected areas. UK government guidance identifies faecal waste, agrochemicals, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and debris as possible post-flood hazards.
