To build a backyard greenhouse, first decide what you will grow and when, then choose a site and structure suited to your light, drainage, wind and snow exposure. Check local permits and structural requirements before buying materials. After that, prepare the site, build and anchor the frame to a complete plan, install the covering, and provide a way for hot air to escape and fresh air to enter.

1. Decide what the greenhouse needs to do

A greenhouse for starting seedlings has different needs from one intended to grow plants to maturity or support year-round production. Decide which plants you will grow, which months you will use the space, and whether you need benches, beds, water, electricity or climate equipment. NC State Extension notes that seed starting or growing plants to maturity generally calls for maximum sun exposure, while summer propagation may benefit from partial shade (NC State Extension’s small-backyard greenhouse guide).

Make a simple site sketch before settling on dimensions. Mark the available footprint, sunlight, drainage direction, access route, nearby buildings and trees, prevailing wind exposure, and water or power access. A level, well-drained location is a useful starting point, but local conditions and the chosen design determine what site preparation and foundation are appropriate.

2. Choose a shape, covering and scale

The shape affects usable space, light, headroom, ventilation and construction complexity. UF/IFAS Extension describes several common forms; these are trade-offs, not a universal ranking:

Form What to weigh
Lean-to Can fit against an existing building, but attachment, shade, ventilation and temperature control require careful consideration.
Quonset or hoop Curved form; sidewalls are lower, which can limit headroom near the edges.
Gothic Curved roof form with more sidewall headroom than a typical Quonset.
Gable Provides headroom, but uses more material than simpler forms.

Choose the covering together with the frame and fastening system. Polyethylene greenhouse film appears in NC State Extension’s example plan, while greenhouse suppliers also list rigid polycarbonate panels and shade cloth. These are product categories, not proof that one covering is best for every site. Check the product’s dimensions, installation requirements, light properties, expected service life and compatibility with the structure. The frame and fastening details must suit the selected covering and local weather exposure (GK Greenhouses covering and accessory listings).

Do not casually enlarge a published plan. Width changes can affect structural demands, and the member sizes, connections, bracing and foundation cannot be assumed to remain adequate. Cornell’s homeowner manual advises building-department approval for plans and explains that wind and snow loads can affect member sizing (Cornell/NRAES homeowner manual).

3. Check permits and weather requirements before construction

Before ordering materials or changing dimensions, contact your local building department about permits, setbacks, foundation rules and applicable code requirements. Ask what wind and snow criteria apply to your location and whether the proposed greenhouse needs a site-specific structural review. Loads vary with exposure, orientation, geometry, height, openings and construction details; a plan from another region is not a substitute for local requirements.

UConn Extension illustrates the scale of wind forces with a commercial example: an 80-mph wind acting on a 10-by-100-foot greenhouse sidewall would create 16,000 pounds of force. That 2024 illustration is not a backyard design value or a calculation for your structure (UConn Extension wind-load guidance).

NC State Extension’s older plan says its specific structure would support up to 4 inches of dry snow and advises temporary support for deeper or unusually wet snow. Do not apply that figure to another greenhouse: the plan is a legacy, regional example, and the actual design and local requirements govern (NC State Extension plan). Wind uplift, snow, heavy rain and power loss can also affect greenhouse operations; UConn’s storm-preparation material discusses these risks, but commercial-scale procedures should not be transferred to a backyard build without qualified assessment (UConn Extension greenhouse weather-event guidance).

4. Gather materials for the chosen plan

There is no universal shopping list: the required sizes and quantities depend on your design, dimensions, foundation, covering and local structural criteria. NC State Extension’s PVC-and-film example lists these material categories:

Bamworld 3-Tier Wooden Greenhouse 54" Tall Portable Green House
  • 3-TIER WOODEN FRAME, 15.8" CLEARANCE PER SHELF: Stands 54" tall with a 23" x 17" footprint. Each shelf offers 15.8" of vertical clearance for nursery pots, seed trays, and small herbs. Lightweight eucalyptus wood(not bamboo) frame at 8.5 lbs — won't rust, easy to move.
  • ROLL-UP ZIPPER DOOR & 85% CLEAR PE COVER: The clear polyethylene cover transmits 75% of sunlight while trapping heat and blocking wind and light frost. Roll up the zipper door for watering and ventilation. For exposed, windy spots, anchor the frame with your own sandbags or ground stakes — hardware not included.
  • SEED STARTING 4-6 WEEKS EARLY: The enclosed cover creates a warm microclimate for germinating seeds, overwintering herbs, and protecting tender plants from cold snaps. Not a replacement for a heated greenhouse — think of it as a season extender, not a year-round grow room.
  • TOOL-FREE 15-MINUTE SETUP: Push-fit wooden frame assembles in about 15 minutes. Tap the connectors firmly with the palm of your hand (no hammer needed) to keep the shelf snug. Adjustable shelf heights fit plants of different sizes.
  • INDOOR & OUTDOOR VERSATILITY: Tucks onto a balcony, sunroom, or covered patio. Use it as a humidity dome with your own grow light, an herb garden, or a plant display shelf. Best for sheltered spots — not designed for direct exposure to heavy rain or sustained gusts.Wood may expand in humidity — adjust shelves if needed.
  1. Finalize the plan and approvals. Confirm the dimensions, covering, anchoring, ventilation, door access and intended growing season. Resolve local permit and load requirements before purchasing materials.
  2. Prepare the site and foundation. Make the base area level and address drainage as the design requires. Foundation and anchoring details must suit the structure and site; permanent installations may warrant professional design and local review.
  3. Assemble and anchor the frame. Follow the plan’s specified member sizes, connections, bracing and anchoring. In NC State Extension’s example, PVC ribs attach to treated lumber using EMT clamps, with EMT reinforcement in the ridge. These details belong to that plan and should not be assumed suitable for another span or location.
  4. Build the end walls and door. Fit openings to the chosen frame and covering system while preserving the specified bracing. Make sure the door provides practical access and does not conflict with ventilation openings.
  5. Install and secure the covering. Use the covering dimensions and fastening method designed for the frame, following the plan and product instructions. NC State’s example uses clear polyethylene film; other covering systems need compatible frame and fastening details.
  6. Fit ventilation, then finish the interior. Provide low-level air inlets and higher outlets where the design allows. Add benches, beds, water access and any climate equipment needed for your plants and conditions.

6. Plan ventilation before the greenhouse heats up

Sunlight can heat a greenhouse quickly, even when outside air feels cold. Ventilation works by letting warm air escape and cooler outside air enter when conditions permit. Low inlets and higher outlets can support cross-ventilation; doors, vents and roll-up sides may form part of the system. A fan can help move air, but it needs suitable inlets and must be selected for the actual greenhouse and growing conditions (WSU Extension greenhouse construction and management).

Manual doors and vents are simple options if you can monitor conditions and open or close them as needed. Optional equipment includes exhaust fans, thermostats and solar- or heat-activated vent openers. Shade cloth can reduce direct sun when appropriate for the plants, season and ventilation setup. Choose equipment for the structure rather than relying on a generic size or setting (SB Greenhouses climate-control categories).

Check the actual greenhouse temperature and watch how plants respond. There is no single temperature target that fits every crop and stage of growth.

7. A pre-build checklist

  • Purpose, crops and season of use are defined.
  • The site’s sun, drainage, wind exposure, access, water and power have been considered.
  • The shape, dimensions, covering and fastening system are selected as one compatible design.
  • Local permit, foundation, wind and snow requirements have been checked with the appropriate local authority.
  • The plan specifies frame members, connections, bracing and anchoring for the actual design and site.
  • Ventilation and any shade or powered climate equipment are included in the layout.
  • Material quantities come from the chosen plan, not from an unrelated example.
