The least expensive antenna tower that is safe for your site is usually the smallest complete, manufacturer-designed support system that meets your antenna’s height and loading needs—not a tower assembled from mismatched parts. Before buying anything, check local rules, identify the site constraints, and compare a properly rated mast with a complete guyed-tower system. The right choice depends on the antenna, wind exposure, soil, available space, and installation requirements.
Start with the antenna and site, not a shopping list
A tower’s suitability depends on the loads and conditions it was designed for. A general materials list cannot establish that a particular structure, foundation, or set of anchors is adequate. ROHN’s Guyed Towers – 45G guide, for example, documents assumptions about terrain and the placement of lines and antennas; its specifications should not be transferred to a different configuration or site. ROHN directs installers to use the assembly drawings supplied for the tower and says installation should be handled by qualified, experienced personnel.

Before comparing products, determine what the installation actually needs:
- Height: Identify the antenna height needed for your intended use. More height can mean greater structural, foundation, installation, and approval demands; do not assume that the tallest option is the best value.
- Load: Identify the antenna and mount, their projected area, and where they sit on the support. Give these details to the manufacturer and the qualified engineer assessing the installation.
- Exposure and ground: Record the site’s terrain and wind exposure, available soil and foundation information, and any slope or other condition that may affect the design.
- Space and access: Check property boundaries, power lines, erection access, and whether there is room for guys and their anchors if the selected system requires them.
- Rules and restrictions: Check local requirements and any applicable deed or community restrictions before committing to a design or purchase.
Compare a rated mast with a complete guyed tower
Two options described in ARRL’s Antenna and Tower Safety guidance are a telescoping TV antenna mast for a modest load and a purpose-designed guyed tower. The mast’s stated height range is not a rating for your antenna or site; suitability must be confirmed for the specific product and conditions. The sources do not establish comparable prices, so neither option can be called the cheapest without current, like-for-like quotations.

| Height information in ARRL guidance | 20–50 feet; ARRL describes this as a type of inexpensive support, not a rating for a particular product or installation. | Not stated as a general range in the cited guidance; select a model and configuration for the required height and site. |
| Suitable load | Not established for a specific antenna; verify the mast’s rating and site suitability. | Depends on the tower model, configuration, and its design assumptions; confirm against the manufacturer’s current documents and the project design. |
| Ground support | Product- and site-specific; do not assume the mast can be installed without suitable support. | Foundation, guys, and anchors are part of the structural system and must match the design and actual ground conditions. |
| Space | Depends on the product and installation. | Guy wires and anchors need room. ARRL gives 60%–80% of tower height as a planning rule of thumb for anchor distance from the base, not an engineered layout. |
| Price comparison | Not stated in the cited guidance. | Not stated in the cited guidance. |
Compare complete proposals on allowable antenna load and projected area, height, wind and terrain assumptions, foundation and anchor design, footprint, erection method, safety provisions, approvals, and maintenance. A lower equipment price does not show that the system is suitable or cheaper once installation and site work are included.

Local requirements
Ask the local building and zoning officials what applies to your property, including permits, height limits, setbacks, location, and structural-safety requirements. ARRL’s discussion of PRB-1 explains that local regulation of amateur antenna structures may address matters such as height, placement, setbacks, and safety. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so do not rely on another town’s approval or assume that a tower is exempt.

Federal aviation and FCC rules
For U.S. amateur-radio installations, 47 CFR §97.15 says that certain structures more than 200 feet above ground at the site, or located near or at a public-use airport, must notify the FAA and register with the FCC under Part 17. Whether a specific site or structure meets a trigger requires checking the exact circumstances and current rules. ARRL’s summary of FAA tower rules also discusses possible requirements for some structures below 200 feet near airport or heliport glide slopes. Verify current FAA requirements for the proposed location rather than treating the 200-foot figure as a universal exemption.
Budget for the whole installation
Request a like-for-like quote for a complete system after the design and approval path are clear. Ask what is included and what remains the property owner’s responsibility. The project budget may need to account for:

- The support, matched connections, guy materials, anchors, and foundation components specified for the chosen design.
- Site investigation and engineering needed to confirm the design for local soil, terrain, wind exposure, antenna, and mounting position.
- Permits, required reviews, site preparation, erection equipment, and qualified installation labor.
- Grounding, inspection, and future maintenance as specified by the manufacturer and design professionals.
ROHN’s 45G guide illustrates why a tower should be treated as a system: its configuration and design assumptions govern the associated components and installation. Do not reduce the price by mixing tower sections, substituting materials, or omitting guys, anchors, or foundation work unless the manufacturer and qualified engineer approve the change for the exact design.
Use a safe, site-specific installation process
- Confirm the design and approvals. Give the manufacturer and qualified engineer the antenna, mount, required height, and site information. Obtain the current model-specific assembly and foundation documents, and resolve local and applicable federal requirements before construction.
- Lay out the site from the approved design. Confirm the tower location, foundation, anchor positions, utilities, property limits, access, and clearances. ARRL’s 60%–80% anchor-distance guidance is a rule of thumb for planning only; the final layout must come from the project design.
- Build and erect to the drawings. Follow the manufacturer’s and engineer’s specifications for the foundation, tower assembly, guying, anchors, and erection method. Do not improvise a lifting or climbing procedure.
- Use qualified help and appropriate protection. ARRL’s safety guidance calls for appropriate personal protective equipment, including fall protection, and keeping towers and masts twice the installation height away from power lines. Treat that clearance as safety guidance, not permission to work near a line; contact the utility or a qualified professional if there is any doubt.
- Inspect and maintain as specified. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and maintenance instructions and arrange any required inspections. Tower, foundation, guy, and anchor condition are all relevant to continued safe use.
