How to Bring Daylight Into a Home Without Overheating It

Plan windows, glazing, and shading together to bring in useful daylight while limiting unwanted solar heat.

Bring in daylight by planning windows and shading together: favor exposures that are easier to control, block unwanted sun outside the glass where practical, and choose glazing by comparing visible transmittance (VT) with solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). The right balance depends on climate, orientation, existing shade, room use, and whether winter solar heat is useful.

Start with orientation and the sun’s path

Window direction affects both daylight and heat. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Science Education guidance says, “Windows on the north and south side let in natural light, and it is easy to control glare and heat on these facades.” Read the DOE guidance on natural light and daylighting.

East- and west-facing windows can be harder to manage because low-angle sun can create glare and unwanted heat. ENERGY STAR advises limiting west-facing windows in new construction or major additions where possible. This is not a reason to eliminate those windows in every home; it is a reason to account for their exposure and provide effective shading if they are part of the design.

For a new home or major addition

Consider orientation and window area early, before the floor plan and elevations are fixed. Favor exposures that provide useful, controllable daylight, and be cautious about large east- or west-facing areas unless the design includes shading suited to low-angle sun. On south-facing windows, a properly designed horizontal overhang can block higher summer sun while allowing lower winter sun to enter where that seasonal heat is beneficial. The appropriate overhang depth depends on the home’s geometry, climate, and surroundings; there is no universal dimension.

For an existing home

Track which windows receive direct sun, at what times of day, and in which seasons. A west-facing room that is comfortable in the morning may overheat late in the day. This observation helps distinguish a shading problem from a general lack of daylight and guides where an exterior screen, sunscreen, or adjustable interior shade may help.

Choose glazing by comparing heat and light

Two ratings help explain what a window does:

  • Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC): indicates how much solar heat passes through the window. A lower SHGC means less solar heat transmission.
  • Visible transmittance (VT): indicates how much visible light passes through. A higher VT means more visible light.

Compare both ratings rather than selecting glass by how dark it looks. A dark tint may reduce solar heat, but it also reduces visible light and can affect clear views. The U.S. Department of Energy does not recommend tinting as a default residential solution. DOE explains window performance ratings.

Match SHGC to climate and orientation

In warm, cooling-dominated climates, DOE purchasing guidance recommends low-SHGC windows to limit unwanted solar heat. In colder climates, higher SHGC may be useful on south-facing windows to admit winter sun, while a low U-factor helps limit heat loss through the window. ENERGY STAR also provides climate- and orientation-specific advice; use the guidance for the relevant climate zone rather than assuming one specification is best everywhere. See ENERGY STAR’s residential windows guidance.

When replacing windows, compare NFRC-rated SHGC and VT alongside U-factor and the applicable climate zone. A replacement window is one option when an upgrade is warranted, not a prerequisite for improving daylight in a home.

Shade unwanted sun before it heats the glass

Exterior shading can intercept sunlight before it reaches the glazing. DOE guidance identifies overhangs, exterior screens and sunscreens, fixed shades, and louvers as ways to manage unwanted heat or glare. Choose the type and placement with the sun angle in mind: a horizontal overhang can suit high summer sun on a south-facing façade, while a screen or other vertical exterior shade may be more useful where low-angle sun is the concern. DOE describes window-covering options.

Interior blinds and shades offer flexible control, but when they are closed they also reduce daylight. Exterior and interior shading are therefore not interchangeable: exterior systems can stop sun before it warms the glass, while interior coverings let occupants adjust light and privacy from inside. Consider views, operation, maintenance, and how often the shading will be used as well as heat control.

Use roof daylighting selectively

Skylights and solar tubes can bring daylight into interior rooms that have little or no access to exterior windows. Their suitability depends on roof orientation, available shade, room use, and cooling needs. More roof glazing does not automatically mean better comfort: sloped or horizontal glazing can contribute to seasonal overheating and heat loss. DOE’s passive-solar guidance discusses these trade-offs and the stable principle of designing for seasonal sun angles, though it is older material rather than current product or code guidance. Read DOE guidance on passive solar home design.

Plan the solution around the actual home

Windows, shading, and roof daylighting address different parts of the problem. Before settling on a change, compare the options against the room and façade rather than treating them as substitutes.

  • Climate and orientation: Identify whether the room is exposed to useful winter sun, intense afternoon sun, or both.
  • Daylight and view: Consider how much visible light and outward view remain when shading is deployed.
  • Shading performance: Match the device to the sun angle and the window’s exposure; account for neighboring buildings and existing tree shade.
  • Room needs: A room used at a different time of day may need a different control strategy from one with the same orientation but different use.
  • Project constraints: Window area, building geometry, installation, maintenance, and local requirements affect what is practical.

For construction or renovation decisions involving window dimensions, overhang depth, or major glazing changes, apply the guidance to the home’s actual climate, orientation, and geometry. The DOE and ENERGY STAR guidance does not establish a single dimension or specification that works for every property.

What the national savings estimate does—and does not—mean

ENERGY STAR states that certified windows, doors, and skylights can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 13% on average nationwide compared with non-certified products. ENERGY STAR says this estimate is based on RESFEN 6.0 calculations performed by D&R International. It is a national estimate, not a predicted saving for a particular house or a guarantee that a replacement will solve overheating. ENERGY STAR provides the estimate and its basis.
