If you mean your neighbor’s music is disturbing you, start with a calm, specific request if you feel safe doing so. They may not realize the sound carries into your home. Describe when and where you hear it, explain the effect, and ask for a change that could work for both of you. There is no single quiet-hours rule that applies everywhere.
1. Decide whether direct contact feels safe
If the neighbor has been threatening or aggressive, do not approach them to discuss the noise. For immediate danger, use the appropriate emergency service where you live. For ordinary noise, the right complaint route depends on your location; it is often a local council or municipal noise service rather than police.
If you feel safe, an informal conversation is often a sensible first step. GOV.UK advises: “Before making a formal complaint or getting others involved, try to discuss the problem with your neighbour.” GOV.UK neighbor-dispute guidance notes that the neighbor may not know the noise is a problem.
2. Choose a calm moment
Raise the issue when neither of you is already upset, rather than confronting your neighbor in the middle of a loud evening. Keep the conversation brief and focused on the sound. Victoria Police recommends sticking to the key issue and considering the other person’s point of view. Victoria Police’s guidance on unreasonable neighbor noise also points out that the neighbor may not be aware the noise is disturbing you.

3. Describe the impact and make a specific request
Give a concrete example: when you hear the music, where it is audible in your home, and how it affects you. Then ask for an action your neighbor can take, such as lowering the volume, moving a speaker away from a shared wall, or keeping the music quieter during hours that matter to you both.
You could say: “Hi, could I ask you about the music? I can hear it clearly in my bedroom around [time], and it’s making it hard to [sleep/work]. Would you be able to turn it down a bit, especially after [time that works for both of us]?” Choose a reasonable time based on the impact and local rules; do not assume there is a universal curfew.

4. Use a note if a conversation feels uncomfortable
A short, factual note is a reasonable alternative if you would rather not speak face to face. GOV.UK advises people who are worried about approaching a neighbor to write a letter, explain the problem clearly, and stick to the facts. GOV.UK’s guidance offers that approach without requiring an accusatory tone.
For example: “Hi, I wanted to let you know the music has been carrying into my bedroom late in the evening. Could you lower it after [time] or move the speaker away from the shared wall? Thanks for considering it.” Include a real example and a clear request; avoid threats or claims about rules you have not checked.

5. Keep the exchange constructive if your neighbor objects
If your neighbor responds defensively, keep the conversation short. Restate the practical effect, listen to their perspective, and suggest discussing it later or continuing in writing. Avoid turning up your own music in retaliation, which can deepen the dispute instead of resolving it.
6. If the noise continues, keep a factual record
Note the dates, approximate start and end times, how long the music lasts, where you can hear it, and its practical effect—for example, interrupted sleep or difficulty working. A straightforward record can help you describe the issue consistently if you contact a landlord, building manager, mediator, or local authority. Check your lease or building rules and the local noise-reporting process before escalating.

7. Choose the next step that fits your situation
Routes vary by location and housing arrangement. The examples below are not interchangeable rules: check the relevant local process before making a formal report.

Official procedures differ across jurisdictions. For instance, GOV.UK’s neighbor-dispute guidance describes options including discussion, a neighbor’s landlord where relevant, mediation, council action, police for violence or harassment, and court action as a last resort. NYC311’s neighbor-noise guidance describes New York City complaint and mediation options. Outside those places, use your local authority’s instructions rather than assuming the same steps or legal thresholds apply.
