How to Adjust a John Deere Electric PTO Clutch: Model-Specific Steps

The 0.41 mm PTO clutch adjustment applies to John Deere 130–185 lawn tractors covered by TM1351—not every Deere mower. Confirm the model and serial range before following the steps.

The documented adjustment procedure uses a 0.41 mm (0.016 in.) feeler gauge at three lock nuts, but it applies only to John Deere 130–185 lawn tractors covered by technical manual TM1351. Do not use that clearance on a different Deere model without checking its manual and serial range first.

First, confirm the model and manual

“John Deere electric PTO clutch” does not identify one universal adjustment setting. The detailed procedure below comes from John Deere technical manual TM1351 for 130–185 lawn tractors, marked 18 April 1990, in a reproduction hosted by StudyLib. It should not be treated as the specification for an X-series mower or another tractor.

Check the machine’s model and serial number, then use John Deere Manuals & Training to find the applicable manual and parts catalog. If your machine is not within the TM1351-covered 130–185 series and range, stop here and follow its own clutch specification.

Adjust the 130–185 clutch

What you need

  • A 0.41 mm (0.016 in.) feeler-gauge blade.
  • The correct machine manual confirming that the TM1351 procedure applies.

Procedure

  1. Switch the PTO off, disconnect the spark plug wire and remove the key before reaching toward the clutch.
  2. Insert the 0.41 mm (0.016 in.) feeler gauge through the slot in the clutch plate, between the clutch rotor and armature.
  3. Tighten one adjustment lock nut until the gauge begins to bind. Sweep the gauge while adjusting, and do not overtighten.
  4. Repeat the adjustment at each of the other two lock nuts.
  5. Reconnect the spark plug wire, start the engine and switch the PTO on to check engagement. Keep hands and tools clear of moving parts during this test.

This sequence and clearance are specified in TM1351, section 40-05-1. The manual’s instruction is: “Use a sweeping motion with feeler gauge while making this adjustment. DO NOT overtighten.” See the TM1351 technical manual reproduction.

If the PTO still will not engage

Do not keep tightening the nuts. TM1351 directs the reader to check electrical connections for continuity or disassemble the PTO for inspection and repair. Its inspection guidance includes checking bearings for wear or damage, springs for breaks, and rotor and armature contact surfaces for scoring or grooves; replace parts as needed.

A replacement clutch should be considered only after diagnosis, and compatibility must be checked against the exact machine model and serial range. A part listing alone is not confirmation that a clutch fits your tractor.
