Arrange a closet around what you own and how often you use it: clear and sort the contents, measure the space, then assign hanging, folded, shoe, and seasonal storage to specific zones. This measurement-led approach works for reach-in and walk-in closets without assuming one layout fits every home.
1. Empty the closet and sort what belongs there
Take everything out so you can see the available space and make decisions without working around piles. Sort belongings into keep, seasonal, donate, and discard groups, and move anything that does not belong in the closet to its proper home. The Container Store suggests considering a one-year purge rule; treat that as the retailer’s guideline, not a universal standard.
Before putting items back, group the keep pile by type: long garments, shorter hanging clothes, folded pieces, shoes, accessories, and seasonal belongings. This inventory will determine the layout.
2. Measure the closet before choosing storage
Record the closet’s height, width, and depth. Note features that affect what will fit, including sloped ceilings, recesses, pipes, radiators, and the opening direction of hinged doors. Check that drawers can extend and doors can open without blocking access. IKEA Canada recommends measuring before selecting a closet system; its guide is a planning resource, not a guarantee that a particular component will fit every home.
#1 Best Overall
- Simply Modern, Seamless Fit: The CUSTOS Collection pairs crisp right‑angled lines with handy open storage to create a minimalist look that fits easily into your home. Complete your space with matching storage furniture for a cohesive look
- Customize Your Walk-In Closet: The closet system expands from 4' to 9.6' wide to fit small to extra‑wide closets. Four 26"–49" telescoping hanging rods and a 6‑height adjustable shelf let you customize the layout and build your dream reach-in closet
- Spacious Layout: 5 hanging zones maximize vertical space, keeping dresses, shirts, pants, and jackets wrinkle-free and easy to access. 4 shelving storage areas hold hats and bags, including a bottom section for shoes, and a top shelf holds storage bins
- Flexible Installation: Set up the adjustable rods on one side or both to fit your space, or just use the middle tower alone. If you need a different rod height, you can drill new holes to fit your clothes and storage needs
- Built to Last, Easy to Clean: Made from particleboard with classic white finish and quality hardware, this closet organizer starter kit is sturdy and durable while giving a clean, modern, and timeless look. The smooth surface wipes clean in seconds
Use the wardrobe inventory and measurements together. A layout that looks efficient on paper can be awkward if it puts a drawer behind a door or leaves too little clearance for a long coat.
3. Assign space to the clothes you actually own
Long garments
Give coats, long dresses, and other full-length pieces an uninterrupted hanging section. Measure from the rod to the floor or shelf below, allowing the garment to hang without dragging or bunching.

- RODS OPTIONAL: Utilize the storage tower and closet shelving without attaching hang rods for alternative purposes or organization in spots where space is limited; Hang rods can be attached on both sides or along one single side as needed
Short-hanging garments
Use a separate zone for shirts, blouses, jackets, and other items that fit in a shorter span. If most of your wardrobe is short-hanging, a second rod may create another useful hanging area, provided the closet’s height and access allow it.
Folded clothes and accessories
Put folded categories on shelves or in drawers, organized so you can see and retrieve them. Shelves make contents visible; drawers conceal them and can help contain smaller items. Choose between them according to your access needs and the space available.

Shoes
Keep shoes in an accessible area, such as a shoe rack or organizer. Leave extra room for boots rather than planning around the space needed for a low shoe.
Seasonal and infrequently used items
Use an upper shelf or labeled, stackable bins for seasonal belongings you do not need every day. Reserve easy-to-reach zones for items you use frequently, so accessing everyday clothes does not require moving storage containers.

4. Use planning figures as a starting point, not a fit guarantee
IKEA Canada’s closet-planning guide offers these rough space examples. They are illustrative figures from that guide, not universal standards or independent measurements; actual clearance depends on the garments, hangers, and closet configuration.
| Item or category | Guide’s example |
|---|---|
| Storage boxes | 19 cm |
| Coats | 100 cm |
| Shirts and blouses | 80 cm |
| Short dresses | 120 cm |
| Very long clothes | 190 cm |
| Shoe rack | 33 cm; boots need more room |
| Ten folded T-shirts | 25 cm |
| Ten folded sweaters | 30 cm |
| Hanging trousers | 60–70 cm |
Use these examples to sketch possible zones, then verify the fit against your own clothes and the measured space. The figures do not predict how much capacity a particular closet will gain.

- 【Reinforced Stackable Closet Storage】Create more usable vertical space with these closet organizers and storage bins. Each bin measures approximately 16"D x 13"W x 7"H.
5. Add organizers only when they solve a real problem
Start with the closet’s existing rod and shelves where they work. Add components to address a specific shortfall, such as clothes crowding a rod, shoes becoming hard to find, or small accessories lacking a home.
- Slim-profile hangers: can help when bulky hangers consume too much rod space.
- An extra rod: may add a second hanging zone for shorter garments if the closet’s height and layout permit it.
- Hooks: can provide a place for accessories or items that are awkward to fold.
- Hanging organizers or shoe storage: can use vertical space when shelves or floor space are limited.
- Stackable bins: can contain seasonal items on an upper shelf; labels make categories easier to identify.
- A modular closet system: may suit a measured space that the existing configuration cannot organize well. IKEA describes open, closed, and mixed storage options; compare them against your wardrobe, access needs, and door clearance.
For a full custom installation, a closet designer or installer is one relevant service option. The Association of Closet and Storage Professionals describes a community that includes designers, installers, manufacturers, suppliers, and related businesses: ACSP.
6. Check the layout in daily use
After putting items away, check whether you can reach everyday clothes, see what is stored, and open doors or drawers without obstruction. If a category is difficult to retrieve, move it to a more accessible zone or change how it is stored. Revisit the arrangement after using it and adjust categories that are not working; the sources offer practical organizing advice, not controlled evidence comparing maintenance methods.
