Adult moths are the warning light on the dashboard. The larvae are what ruin wool sweaters, chew through stored food, and keep the infestation going.
In most homes, the split is simple. Moths flying near cereal, flour, pet food, birdseed, nuts, dried fruit, or pantry shelving are usually pantry moths, often Indian meal moths. Small tan moths showing up around dark closets, wool rugs, stored blankets, natural-fiber upholstery, or textile storage are usually clothes moths.
On remodeling and repair jobs, we see the same pattern over and over: homeowners spray the visible moths, hang a few traps, and still miss the source. The fix is more practical than dramatic. Remove the food source, vacuum cracks and edges, wash or treat vulnerable items, store things in hard airtight containers, reduce humidity where it matters, and close the building gaps that give pests hidden pathways.
First, Identify the Type of Moth
Do not treat every moth the same. Pantry moths and clothes moths live in different places, eat different materials, and require different cleanup work.

Pantry moth signs
Pantry moths are commonly found around kitchens, pantries, laundry rooms where pet food is stored, garages with birdseed, and basement storage shelves. The larvae feed in dry stored foods. Common sources include cereal, flour, cornmeal, rice, pasta, beans, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, candy, spices, dry pet food, and birdseed.
Look for webbing inside packages, clumped flour or grain, small pale larvae, cast skins, or moths fluttering near shelves at night. Do not trust packaging just because it looks unopened. Pantry moth larvae can chew through plastic bags and thin cardboard, so a sealed-looking box can still be infested.
Clothes moth signs
Clothes moths are usually smaller, tan or golden, and more likely to stay in dark quiet areas than fly around bright windows. The larvae feed on keratin and soil found in wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, taxidermy, natural-fiber rugs, felt, pet hair, and lint.
Check wool coats, suits, stored blankets, wool rugs, upholstered furniture, felt piano pads, craft felt, yarn, taxidermy, feather decor, pet bedding, lint-heavy baseboards, and closet corners. Damage often appears as irregular holes, bare patches in rugs, loose fibers, or gritty larval cases in protected areas.
The Rule That Makes Moth Control Work
Killing flying adults alone will not solve a moth problem. You need to remove eggs, larvae, food dust, lint, hair, and the material they are feeding on. That is why vacuuming and source removal come before pesticides.
Pheromone traps are useful, but they are not a complete cure. They mainly attract adult males and help you confirm the pest type, find activity zones, and monitor whether the infestation is declining. If larvae are still feeding in a bag of birdseed, a wool rug, or lint under a baseboard, traps will not fix the underlying problem.
For a typical home, plan on one hard cleanup day and then 30 days of monitoring. If moth counts keep rising after the source is removed and the house is cleaned, that is when the problem may involve a hidden source, a larger spread, or a professional treatment need.
A 30-Day Plan for Pantry Moths
Pantry moth control is mostly inspection, disposal, cleaning, and better storage. Spraying pantry shelves without removing the infested food source is usually wasted effort and can create unnecessary chemical exposure around food storage.
Day 1: Empty and inspect every shelf
Start with the obvious pantry, then expand 10 to 20 feet if needed. Check kitchen cabinets, breakfast bars, basement storage, garage shelving, pet feeding stations, laundry rooms, and anywhere birdseed or dry pet food is stored.
Remove every dry food package from the affected zone. Inspect seams, corners, folds, box tops, and the underside of shelves. Open suspect packages outside or over a trash bag. Look for webbing, larvae, clumps, pinholes, shed skins, or fine grain dust stuck together.
Day 1: Discard or treat suspect items
Throw out infested food in a sealed trash bag and take it outside the house the same day. Do not leave it in the kitchen trash overnight.

- Trusted by Over 1 Million Households, Food Suppliers, and Pest Professionals: Our pantry moth traps with pheromones are Indian meal moth traps that lure and capture males, interrupting reproduction and reducing future hatches.
- Stops the Pantry Moth Breeding Cycle: This sticky pantry pest trap captures male pantry moths, reducing each new hatch until the infestation collapses. Built for kitchens, pantries, and food storage areas.
- Stronger Lure Than Standard Pheromone Traps: Our patented Blue Stripe formula features a double-concentrated pheromone stripe in the center of each trap, designed to attract male Indianmeal moths faster than basic moth pheromone traps.
- Safe to Use Around Food and People When Used as Directed: This pantry moth trap is built for indoor use. No sprays, fumes, or chemicals near food. These moth traps for house indoor placement last up to 3 months each as an ongoing moth prevention plan.
- 6 Pantry Moth Traps per Pack: Use 3 at a time in a triangle (one in the pantry, two around the kitchen) to keep moths away. Pair with Dr. Killigan's Six Feet Under moth spray for eggs and larvae. For clothing moths, use our Clothing Moth Traps.
For expensive or questionable dry goods that show no obvious infestation, freezing can be used as a practical control step. Many extension recommendations use several days of freezing for pantry items. A conservative household approach is 4 to 7 days in a freezer, especially for grains, nuts, seeds, and pet treats. Heating is another option for some dry goods, but it can affect food quality and must be done carefully. When in doubt, discard low-cost food and save the effort for high-value items.
Day 1: Vacuum cracks before wiping
Use a crevice tool on shelf pin holes, cabinet corners, shelf edges, toe kicks, drawer tracks, wall-floor joints, and gaps behind removable shelves. Then empty the vacuum canister or bag outside.
After vacuuming, wipe shelves with warm soapy water and let them dry fully. Avoid soaking particleboard cabinet shelves; swelling can damage the cabinet and create more gaps. If shelf paper is old, loose, or contaminated, replace it after the cabinet is clean and dry.
Days 2 to 30: Store and monitor
Move safe foods into hard airtight containers with gasketed lids. Glass, metal, and rigid plastic containers are much better than rolled bags, thin cardboard, or clipped plastic pouches. Pantry moths often return when one forgotten bag of rice, pet food, or birdseed stays in weak packaging.
Place pheromone traps according to the label, usually one or two in the affected pantry area. More is not always better. If traps are packed too densely, they can confuse monitoring. Check them weekly and write down the count. You want to see a steady drop after the food source is removed.
A Room-by-Room Plan for Clothes Moths
Clothes moth control takes more patience because the source may be a sweater, a rug edge under furniture, pet hair behind a baseboard, or an old bird nest in an attic or eave. Start with the highest-value and highest-risk textiles.
Closets and garment storage
Remove wool, silk, fur, feather-filled items, vintage clothing, felt hats, uniforms, and stored blankets. Inspect cuffs, collars, pocket folds, shoulder seams, hems, and the bottom of garment bags.
Dry cleaning kills all life stages on dry-clean-only garments. Washable items should be laundered before storage because sweat, body oils, food stains, and spills attract larvae. Store clean seasonal clothing in airtight bins or garment bags. For long-term storage, avoid loose cardboard boxes and open fabric bins.
Rugs, upholstery, and floor edges
Natural-fiber rugs are a common hidden source. Inspect under sofas, along baseboards, below beds, behind doors, and under rug pads. Moth larvae prefer quiet, dark, undisturbed areas where lint, hair, and fibers collect.
Vacuum both sides of small rugs if possible. For larger wool rugs, vacuum slowly along edges and under furniture. If damage is active or the rug is valuable, professional rug cleaning or treatment may cost more than a basic pest visit, but it can be the right move to protect the textile.
Storage rooms, basements, and attics
Check stored blankets, craft yarn, felt, costumes, heirlooms, taxidermy, feather decor, pet beds, and old upholstered furniture. In unfinished spaces, also look for bird nests, rodent nesting material, or animal remains. These can support fabric pests and other insects even when the living space looks clean.

Humidity matters. Low indoor humidity is less favorable for clothes moth development, so moisture control belongs in the prevention plan. Closets on exterior walls, basement storage rooms, and poorly ventilated laundry areas deserve extra attention. A practical indoor target for many homes is about 30% to 50% relative humidity, while avoiding levels that create condensation on windows, walls, or ducts.
What to Use: Cleaning, Heat, Cold, Traps, and Pesticides
The best moth control uses several modest steps instead of one big product. Start with physical removal. Then use heat, cold, dry cleaning, airtight storage, and monitoring. Reserve pesticides for targeted use when the source is known and the label fits the location.

|---|---|---|---|
| Vacuuming and washing | Pantry shelves, closet edges, baseboards, rug edges | Mostly labor; replacement vacuum bags may cost a few dollars | Do this before any pesticide work. It removes larvae, eggs, lint, hair, and food dust. |
| Pheromone traps | Detecting and monitoring pantry or clothes moth activity | About $10 to $30 per pack | Useful for tracking, but traps alone usually do not eliminate an infestation. |
| Airtight food containers | Pantry prevention after cleanup | About $25 to $100+ for container sets | Use hard containers with gasketed lids. Thin bags and cardboard are weak points. |
| Garment bags and bins | Clean wool, silk, fur, blankets, and seasonal clothing | About $10 to $50+ each | Store only clean, dry textiles. Dirty clothing attracts larvae. |
| Dry cleaning | Wool coats, suits, delicate garments | Varies by garment and market | Kills clothes moth life stages on garments and removes attractive body oils. |
| Professional moth treatment | Multi-room, recurring, valuable textiles, hidden sources | Commonly about $200 to $370 per home; many pest visits run $150 to $500 | Cost depends on species, square footage, access, severity, and follow-up needs. |
Be careful with mothballs
Mothballs are regulated pesticides, not general air fresheners or casual repellents. They must be used exactly according to the label, typically in tightly sealed containers for listed pests and materials. Using mothballs in open rooms, attics, crawl spaces, vehicles, gardens, trash cans, or other off-label areas is unsafe and may be illegal.
Do not use mothballs as a whole-house treatment. If the odor is spreading through a room, the product is not being contained the way homeowners often assume it should be. For families with children, pets, asthma concerns, or sensitive occupants, this is a product category to handle very cautiously.
Cedar and lavender have limits
Cedar blocks, cedar closets, and lavender sachets may help discourage some moth activity when they are fresh and used with clean stored items. They should not be sold to yourself as extermination. They will not clean out larvae feeding inside a pantry package, under a wool rug, or in lint behind trim.
Building Details That Help Prevent Moths
This is where a construction mindset helps. Moth prevention is not only a storage issue. It is also sanitation, moisture control, and building maintenance.
Recommended Free Tools
On our job sites, we pay attention to the small openings and unfinished edges that homeowners stop seeing after a few years. Gaps at baseboards, loose toe kicks, unsealed pipe penetrations, damaged screens, and poorly fitted doors can all make cleaning harder and pest movement easier.
Seal the small gaps you can actually maintain
Start with simple repairs. Seal baseboard gaps where lint collects. Close pipe penetrations under sinks and behind appliances with appropriate sealant or escutcheon plates. Repair torn window and door screens. Install door sweeps where exterior doors show daylight at the threshold. Replace tired weatherstripping that no longer compresses evenly.
For many homes, a basic prevention repair kit includes paintable acrylic latex caulk for interior trim gaps, silicone or specialty sealant for wet areas, metal mesh or pest-rated backing for larger penetrations before sealant, replacement screen spline, and door sweeps sized to the door width. Keep repairs neat and accessible. Do not foam over areas that need future plumbing or electrical service without thinking through access.
Improve pantry and closet design
A pantry that is easy to clean is easier to keep pest-free. Adjustable shelves should be removable. Deep blind corners should not become long-term storage for forgotten flour, birdseed, or holiday baking supplies. Toe kicks and shelf edges should be tight enough that food dust does not disappear into inaccessible voids.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor closets, ventilation and visibility matter. A dark, packed closet with wool touching the floor is a better moth habitat than a clean, dry closet with breathing room. Use smooth bins, raised shelves, and garment storage that can be inspected. Avoid storing valuable wool directly against exterior masonry or damp basement walls.
Check attic and eave areas if moths keep returning
Repeated moth sightings after a clean pantry and treated textiles can point to less obvious sources. Bird nests in eaves, rodent nesting material in attic corners, or animal contamination in wall voids can support insects. If you see nesting evidence, droppings, damaged soffit screens, or gaps at roof returns, solve the wildlife and exclusion problem first.

Exterior prevention can include repairing soffit gaps, screening vents properly, sealing wall penetrations, correcting water entry, and replacing damaged trim. Use materials suited to the assembly. For example, vents still need airflow, so do not block them with solid material. Use appropriate screening that keeps pests out while preserving ventilation.

Most small pantry moth problems are reasonable DIY projects if you are willing to inspect every dry food item and clean thoroughly. Many small clothes moth problems are also DIY if the source is limited to a few garments or one storage area.

Hire a pest-control professional when moths continue after source removal, when several rooms are involved, when valuable rugs or textiles are at risk, when the source may be in an attic or wall void, or when regulated pesticides are needed. Also bring in help if the infestation is tied to bird or rodent contamination. That work may require pest control, exclusion repair, cleaning, and sometimes insulation or trim repair.
For 2026 budgeting, professional moth extermination is commonly reported around $200 to $370 per home. Many general pest-control visits fall in the $150 to $500 range depending on the pest, treatment method, square footage, and area treated. Limited local service may be closer to $80 to $150, while whole-house service often lands around $200 to $350. Severe cases can reach about $500, especially with follow-up visits or difficult access.
Recurring general pest plans are often priced around $40 to $150 per treatment, or roughly $44 to $55 per month when annualized, depending on the visit schedule and contract terms. Read the service agreement carefully. You want to know what pest is covered, how follow-up visits work, whether pantry or textile preparation is required, and what areas are excluded.
Safety Notes Homeowners Should Not Skip
Keep pesticides away from food contact surfaces unless the label specifically allows that use. In pantries, sanitation and source removal should carry most of the load. If a product is used, remove food, follow the label, ventilate as directed, and let treated areas dry before restocking.

Do not improvise with mothballs, outdoor pesticides, agricultural products, or anything sold without proper labeling. More chemical does not mean better control, especially when the real source is still sitting in a bag, rug, or wall void.
If you live in a rental, condo, or multi-family building, report recurring moth activity early. Shared walls, common storage rooms, trash areas, and building-wide pest pathways can turn a small problem into a repeated one. Building management may need to coordinate inspection, treatment, or repairs.
For construction repairs, permits are usually not needed for minor caulking, weatherstripping, door sweeps, screen repair, or cabinet gap sealing. Larger work can be different. Electrical, plumbing, structural framing, exterior envelope changes, insulation removal, ventilation changes, and moisture remediation may trigger code requirements or licensed trade work depending on your city and state.
What Top Moth Advice Often Misses
The target is the larva, not the adult moth. Adults tell you there is a problem, but larvae create the damage and keep the cycle alive.

Traps are monitors. They help identify the pest and track progress, but they do not replace cleaning, disposal, laundering, dry cleaning, or treating the source.
Mothballs are pesticides. They are not safe for open-room use and should never be used casually in attics, crawl spaces, vehicles, gardens, or trash cans.
Pantry moths can get through weak packaging. Thin cardboard, paper, and plastic bags are not long-term pest-proof storage.
Construction gaps matter. Baseboard cracks, pipe chases, damaged screens, attic nests, eave gaps, and cabinet voids can create hidden harborage or make cleaning incomplete.
Prevention is part storage, part sanitation, part building maintenance. A clean pantry with poor containers can fail. A beautiful closet with high humidity and dirty wool storage can fail. A sealed container system in a house with an attic nest may still see repeat pests until the exterior source is fixed.
The Bottom Line
To get rid of moths, identify the type, remove the larval food source, clean the cracks and edges, treat vulnerable items with washing, dry cleaning, heat, or freezing where appropriate, and use pheromone traps to monitor progress. Then prevent the next cycle with airtight storage, clean textiles, lower-risk humidity levels, better pantry and closet organization, and sealed building gaps.
Moth control alone is not a reason to remodel. But if you are already planning pantry cabinets, closet upgrades, flooring work, exterior repairs, or moisture corrections, build pest prevention into the details. Smooth cleanable shelves, gasketed storage zones, ventilated closets, tight trim, repaired screens, door sweeps, sealed penetrations, and corrected attic or eave problems make the home easier to maintain long after the moths are gone.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of moths are in my house: pantry moths or clothes moths?
Moths around dry foods, pet food, birdseed, cereal, flour, nuts, or pantry shelves are usually pantry moths. Small tan moths in dark closets, wool rugs, stored blankets, or textile storage are more likely clothes moths.
What kills moth eggs and larvae?
For clothes moths, dry cleaning, laundering, careful heat or cold treatment, vacuuming, and airtight storage are common controls. For pantry moths, discard infested food, freeze questionable dry goods for several days when appropriate, vacuum shelf cracks, and transfer safe food to hard airtight containers.
Do mothballs work, and are they safe indoors?
Mothballs are EPA-regulated pesticides and must be used only according to the label, typically in tightly sealed containers. They should not be used in open rooms, attics, crawl spaces, vehicles, gardens, or trash cans.
How much does professional moth extermination cost in 2026?
Common 2026 national figures put professional moth extermination around $200 to $370 per home. Many general pest visits range from $150 to $500, with limited local treatments sometimes around $80 to $150 and severe cases reaching about $500.
Can pantry moths get into sealed packages?
Yes. Pantry moth larvae can chew through plastic bags and thin cardboard, so unopened-looking food packages may still be infested. Hard containers with gasketed lids are much better for prevention.
