How to change the temperature setting
Models with Fridge and Freezer buttons
- Press Fridge to change the refrigerator setting or Freezer to change the freezer setting.
- Press the same button repeatedly until the desired value appears. On this style of control, each press moves the setting down by one degree or one temperature bar.

Family Hub and other display panels
Family Hub models can be adjusted digitally through SmartThings; older models may use the Fridge Manager app. Menus and available controls depend on the model. Other Samsung panels may use different layouts, including arrow buttons, so do not assume the button sequence above applies to every refrigerator. If the controls differ, identify your model and follow its manual.
What temperature should you set?

The two recommendations serve different purposes: Samsung’s figures are its typical settings for its appliances, while FoodSafety.gov’s figures are limits for safe food storage. A freezer setting of -2°F is colder than the 0°F food-safety ceiling; the ceiling does not mean every freezer must be set to exactly 0°F.

How to check the actual compartment temperature
The number on the refrigerator display is a setpoint, not a live reading of every shelf or food item. Samsung says the display represents an average; local temperatures can vary with location and when the door is opened. To check a compartment, use an appliance thermometer:
- Refrigerator: Put the thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment.
- Freezer: Place it between packages of frozen food.
FoodSafety.gov also recommends using an appliance thermometer to confirm temperatures. A measurement indicates conditions where the thermometer is placed; it does not establish that every area of the compartment is at the same temperature. Samsung does not provide one universal wait time after an adjustment in the guidance cited here, so consult your model’s manual if you need model-specific timing.

- Check the refrigerator’s model number and open the matching user manual rather than trying an assumed sequence.
