A miter saw is accurate only when its mechanical geometry is accurate. Calibrate in this order: unplug the saw, align the fence to the blade at the 0° miter setting, reset the miter pointer, align the blade to the table at the 0° bevel setting, reset the bevel pointer, check any 45° or other bevel stops, and confirm the result with a scrap cut. The pointer or scale cannot correct a fence or blade that is physically out of square.

Adjustment screws, lock nuts, detents, and even the part that moves differ by model. Use the calibration section of your saw’s manual to identify the correct hardware; the procedures below explain the geometry and verification sequence without assuming a universal screw layout.

What “square,” “miter,” and “bevel” mean

Three related settings determine whether a cut matches the angle shown on the saw.

  • Square (0° miter and 0° bevel): The blade is perpendicular to the fence when viewed from above and perpendicular to the table when viewed from the side. This produces a nominal 90-degree crosscut through the workpiece.
  • Miter: The saw head or table rotates left or right in the horizontal plane. The 0° detent is the reference for a straight crosscut; settings such as 45° are used for plan-view corners.
  • Bevel: The blade tilts left or right relative to the table. The 0° bevel stop is the vertical reference; a 45° stop is a common compound-cut setting, although some models provide other stops.
  • Pointers and scales: These indicate a setting after the mechanical alignment is correct. Moving a pointer to zero does not make a blade, fence, or stop square.

A saw can read 0° on both indicators and still cut inaccurately if the fence is skewed, the blade is tilted, or a stop is misadjusted. That is why physical checks come before pointer adjustments.

Before you adjust: safety, preparation, and tools

Disconnect power and make the saw safe

  1. Unplug the saw from the receptacle. Manufacturer instructions for alignment procedures, including the Ryobi TSS101L and DEWALT DWS779 manuals, direct the operator to disconnect power before checking or adjusting.
  2. Remove or secure loose material from the table. Keep hands, clothing, and the square away from the blade’s teeth and pinch points.
  3. Follow your model’s instructions for lowering, locking, or supporting the saw head. Do not improvise a way to hold a spring-loaded head or defeat a guard.
  4. Read the calibration section for the exact model before loosening a fastener. Note the required wrench, lock or detent positions, adjustment order, and the hardware that the manufacturer identifies.

Use the right measuring tools

A combination square is the directly supported basic tool for this job. The Ryobi instructions call for one when checking blade-to-table alignment, and DEWALT instructions call for a square when adjusting blade squareness. An accurate square and a piece of flat-sided scrap are also useful for validating the finished cut.

Inspect the square before relying on it. A damaged or bent square can make a perfectly aligned saw appear faulty. Use a straight, flat reference edge on the workpiece; warped stock can hide or create an apparent angle error.

Calibration sequence at a glance

Order Physical check or adjustment What it establishes What it does not fix
1 Fence against blade at 0° miter and 0° bevel Horizontal alignment for square crosscuts A tilted blade or incorrect pointer
2 Miter pointer Accurate reading of the already aligned 0° position A skewed fence or mislocated detent
3 Blade against table at 0° bevel Vertical alignment for a square cut A pointer that is merely indicating the wrong number
4 Bevel pointer Accurate reading of the physical zero A blade that is not seated against the zero stop
5 Other bevel stops, such as 45° Repeatable bevel angles Errors in the 0° geometry if checked first
6 Scrap test cut Proof that the setup cuts accurately Future movement caused by impact, wear, or a changed setup

Step 1: inspect the saw and identify its adjustment hardware

Set the saw on a stable surface and examine the fence, miter table, bevel hinge, detents, pointers, and stops without power connected. Look for loose fasteners, packed dust at a contact surface, damage to the fence, or a blade that is not seated correctly. Do not start by turning every visible screw: some screws secure a scale or pointer, while others set a stop or clamp a structural part.

Open the manual for the exact model and record the prescribed sequence. One saw may correct a horizontal error by loosening fence fasteners; another may specify scale screws or a different alignment part. The location and function of a screw on one model are not evidence that an apparently similar screw on another model has the same job.

Step 2: square the fence to the blade at 0° miter

Set the reference positions

  1. Set the bevel to 0° and seat the head against the zero-bevel stop as directed by the manual.
  2. Set the miter table or head to its 0° detent. Engage the detent or lock so the assembly cannot drift while you measure.
  3. Lower and secure the head only if the manual directs you to do so. The blade must be stopped and the saw unplugged.

Place the square correctly

Put the stock of the combination square against the fence and bring the square’s blade against the flat body of the saw blade. Ryobi’s TSS101L operator manual gives the essential warning: “Make sure that the square contacts the flat part of the saw blade, not the blade teeth.” Teeth are offset and sharpened, so touching them can produce a false reading or damage the square.

Keep the square clear of the gullets and teeth. If the design permits and the manual allows it, check at more than one blade position by rotating the blade by hand only with the saw unplugged. This helps distinguish a fence error from a blade that is not seated or is damaged. Never use the trigger or reconnect power to rotate the blade for a measurement.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

Interpret the gap

With the square held lightly against both references, look for light or a gap along the blade body. Check several points rather than judging one corner. A consistent gap indicates that the fence and blade are not at 90 degrees in the horizontal plane. If the gap changes as the blade is rotated, inspect blade seating, arbor cleanliness, and blade condition before moving the fence.

Adjust the fence, not the pointer

If the manual identifies fence fasteners for this correction, loosen them just enough for the fence to move, bring the fence into contact with the square, and retighten in the specified order. Some models instead direct the operator to adjust scale screws or another alignment component. Use only the procedure and hardware named for your saw. Tighten securely without shifting the fence, then repeat the square check.

Recheck after tightening. A fence can move as clamping pressure changes, so the final measurement must be taken with all required locks engaged. If the saw has a split or sliding fence, check each section in the position used for your work; one section can be aligned while another is not.

Step 3: set the miter pointer after the fence is square

Once the fence-to-blade geometry is correct, leave the miter assembly in its physical 0° detent. Locate the miter pointer screw identified by the manual, loosen it, move the pointer so it aligns with 0° on the scale, and tighten the screw without letting the pointer move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an indication adjustment only. If the fence is still out of square, moving the pointer merely makes the incorrect setting look like zero. Check the square first whenever the saw has been dropped, transported, or altered.

Step 4: square the blade to the table at 0° bevel

Seat the zero-bevel stop

  1. Set the miter to 0° so the table and blade are in the normal square-cut reference position.
  2. Release the bevel lock and bring the head to the 0° bevel stop. Ensure the stop is fully seated rather than held slightly away by the lock mechanism.
  3. Keep the saw unplugged and follow the manual’s instruction for supporting or lowering the head.

Measure against the table

Place the square on the miter table and bring its vertical edge against the flat body of the blade. Do not use the teeth as the reference. Check more than one location on the blade if the manual permits, and watch for debris between the square and table.

A gap means the blade is not perpendicular to the table at the zero-bevel stop. This is a vertical error: a cut can appear correct against the fence from above yet still have a beveled edge.

Adjust the zero-bevel stop specified for your model

Use the prescribed 0° bevel stop adjuster, lock nut, or equivalent mechanism. DEWALT’s DWS779 instructions identify a 0° bevel adjustment screw. Harbor Freight Item 57839 documentation describes a zero-stop screw and lock nut. These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable instructions.

Make a small adjustment, reseat the head against the stop, and measure again. Hold the blade firmly in the prescribed position while tightening the lock nut or fastener; otherwise the stop can move as it is secured. Continue until the blade body and table agree, then engage the bevel lock and repeat the check to confirm that clamping does not introduce tilt.

Step 5: set the bevel pointer and check the other bevel stops

Reset the bevel pointer

With the blade physically vertical and seated against the corrected 0° stop, loosen the bevel-pointer screw, align the pointer with 0°, and tighten it. The pointer should now describe the geometry you have already measured.

Check a 45° stop or other marked stops

After zero bevel is accurate, check the 45° stop if your saw provides one, plus any other stop that you use regularly. Set the head to the marked angle, engage the stop, and use the measuring method specified in the manual. A stop that is independently adjustable may have its own screw or lock; do not alter the zero stop to correct a 45° error unless the manual explicitly directs that procedure.

The Harbor Freight Item 57839 manual describes checking its 0° cut with an accurate square and adjusting its 45° stop. A separate setup and operation manual also distinguishes bevel-stop adjustment from indicator adjustment. Those instructions apply to their respective saw designs, so use them as examples of the sequence rather than as a universal hardware map.

Step 6: verify the settings with a scrap cut

Make a controlled test piece

  1. Choose flat-sided scrap similar in thickness and material to the work you plan to cut. Support long stock so it cannot tip or close on the blade.
  2. With the saw unplugged, confirm the fence, miter lock, bevel lock, and blade are clear. Reconnect power only for the cut, following normal operating and guarding procedures.
  3. Make a clean 0° miter, 0° bevel crosscut. Let the blade reach normal speed, feed smoothly, and wait for it to stop before raising the head.
  4. Disconnect power again before handling the cut pieces or making another adjustment.

Inspect the cut

Check the cut face with an accurate square. For a 0° bevel test, the Harbor Freight manual also describes turning one cut piece 180 degrees and holding the cut ends together. A visible gap or an angle between the pieces reveals remaining error. The exact appearance depends on the stock and cut quality, so use a clean, flat cut rather than a torn or burned edge as your reference.

If the test fails, change one adjustment at a time and repeat the test. Altering the fence, zero bevel stop, and pointer together makes it impossible to tell which change helped. Verify the physical square checks again before touching a pointer.

Model differences you must not assume away

Manual or example Alignment or stop information Pointer instruction Verification described
Ryobi TSS101L operator manual Uses a square for blade-to-table alignment and emphasizes contacting the flat blade body rather than the teeth. Follow the model’s specified indicator procedure after physical alignment. Square-based alignment check.
DEWALT DWS779 instruction manual Identifies a 0° bevel adjustment screw and provides blade-squareness guidance. Loosen and reset the miter pointer after the miter geometry is correct. Square-based blade alignment.
Harbor Freight Item 57839 manual Describes a zero-stop screw with lock nut and a separate 45° stop adjustment. Adjust the indicator after the stop is set. Accurate-square check and a turned-piece test for a 0° cut.
Separate setup and operation manual Corroborates the distinction between fence, bevel-stop, and scale adjustments; its hardware is model-specific. Indicator is set after the physical stops. Stop checks followed by a test cut.

The comparison shows why a generic “turn this screw” diagram can be unsafe or ineffective. Before adjusting, identify whether your manual calls for fence movement, scale movement, a stop screw, a lock nut, or another part.

Troubleshooting: diagnose the type of error

The pointer reads zero but the cut is not square

  • Return to the physical fence-to-blade check at 0° miter. The pointer may be correct while the fence or detent is not.
  • Repeat the blade-to-table check at 0° bevel. A vertical error will remain even when the miter reading is accurate.
  • Inspect whether the blade is seated correctly and whether debris is trapped at the fence, table, arbor, or stop.

The square agrees in one place but not another

  • Rotate the blade by hand only when unplugged and only if the manual permits. A changing gap can indicate blade runout, poor seating, or a damaged blade.
  • Check that the square is contacting the flat blade body, not a tooth or gullet.
  • Examine the square and the stock for damage or warping before changing the saw.

The alignment changes when a lock is tightened

  • Loosen and repeat the adjustment with the lock or clamp engaged only as the manual specifies.
  • Support the fence or head so tightening pressure cannot pull it out of position.
  • Make smaller adjustments, tighten gradually, and measure after final tightening.

The 0° cut is accurate but a 45° bevel is not

  • Leave the verified 0° stop alone and inspect the dedicated 45° or other bevel-stop adjustment.
  • Set the angle against its stop, measure with the recommended method, and retest with scrap.
  • Reset the bevel pointer only after the stop itself is physically accurate.

The two-piece test shows a gap after apparently square measurements

  • Remake the test with flat, stable scrap and a clean cut; a rough edge can mimic an angle error.
  • Check for movement in the fence, miter lock, bevel lock, or work support during the cut.
  • Recheck both horizontal and vertical geometry, changing only one adjustment between tests.

How often to recheck calibration

Recheck the saw whenever it is dropped, transported, subjected to a hard impact, or begins producing visible gaps in joints. It is also sensible to verify the 0° settings before work where a small angle error will compound, such as wide frames or repeated miters. A quick square check and one scrap cut are more reliable than trusting a pointer that has not been inspected since the last setup.

Keep the manual with the saw or record the model number and adjustment sequence in your shop notes. If a future check finds the pointer off but the geometry correct, reset the pointer. If the geometry is wrong, correct the prescribed fence or stop first.

Practical checklist

  • Power disconnected before measuring or adjusting.
  • Exact model manual reviewed; adjustment hardware identified.
  • Square verified and placed against the flat blade body, never the teeth.
  • Bevel at 0° stop and miter at 0° detent for the initial checks.
  • Fence-to-blade alignment corrected before the miter pointer.
  • Blade-to-table alignment corrected before the bevel pointer.
  • 45° and other bevel stops checked only after 0° bevel is accurate.
  • Fasteners retightened and measurements repeated after tightening.
  • Clean, flat scrap cut and checked with an accurate square.
  • Only one adjustment changed between verification cuts.
