A successful museum extension meets the institution’s needs while keeping the historic building’s significance and identity legible. Start by documenting what must be protected, prove that new space is necessary, and compare locations and designs for their effects on historic fabric, views, scale, and setting. The new work can be contemporary; it should relate to the old building without copying it or overwhelming it.

There is no single style for a compatible museum extension

A modern addition does not have to imitate a historic building to belong beside it. The National Park Service (NPS) says an addition may be traditionalist, contemporary, or a simplified version of the existing building. The test is how well it balances compatibility with distinction: it should relate to the historic building in scale and character, remain identifiable as new, and avoid overwhelming the old building or erasing its identity. The NPS explains that there is no formula or prescription for designing a compatible addition.

That principle is useful across projects, but the cited guidance is U.S. federal guidance, not a universal design code or permission to build. Local heritage designations, planning controls, and consent processes vary. Use conservation guidance to frame the design problem, then establish the requirements that apply to the particular site.

The practical challenge is to deliver museum functions and visitor movement while retaining the original building’s significance, character-defining features, and setting. This requires more than choosing a façade material. The position, size, massing, connection, and effect on important spaces and views all matter.

Establish what gives the building and site their character

Before drawing an extension, identify the heritage values the project needs to protect. That assessment should cover the building and its setting: significant spaces, materials, architectural features, landscape elements, approach routes, and views. NPS says review begins with the effect on the historic building and can also consider the surrounding historic district. Ontario’s conservation guidance calls for decisions grounded in both historic documentation and physical evidence.

Build the record from available photographs, drawings, and other historic documents, alongside a careful examination of the building as it exists. Compare documentary evidence with physical evidence rather than assuming that a present-day feature is original or that an altered area has no significance. Ontario’s eight guiding principles, updated March 25, 2026, set out this evidence-based approach to conservation.

For a museum, the assessment should be clear enough to guide choices later: which spaces or materials are especially sensitive to alteration, which elevations are visible from important viewpoints, and what features make the building recognizable. A useful project record distinguishes those constraints from areas where change may be less harmful. It gives trustees, designers, and project managers a shared basis for discussing alternatives instead of relying on broad impressions such as “keep the old character.”

Prove the need for an addition before expanding the footprint

Translate the museum’s requirements into a space brief before selecting a site for new construction. Gallery, education, visitor, research, collection-storage, and building-service functions are possible categories to assess; they are not a checklist that every museum must include. Define what the institution needs, what relationships between functions matter, and which requirements cannot be met by adapting existing space.

The NPS recommends first considering whether required space can be found in secondary areas of the existing building. That makes alternatives part of the conservation case, not an afterthought. A smaller intervention in a less significant space may meet a need with less effect on historic fabric than a new wing, though the right answer depends on the building and brief.

Document the alternatives considered and why they do or do not work. This helps show that the extension responds to a real museum need rather than treating unused land or a convenient connection point as sufficient justification. It also clarifies which functions truly require new space and which might be accommodated through less harmful changes.

Choose a location by testing views, landscape, and prominence

Map the project’s visibility from the site and public realm. Consider important approaches, landscape features, views toward and away from the historic building, and the prominence of each elevation. NPS often recommends a rear or less conspicuous location, but a rear elevation is not automatically secondary: it may be prominent from an important viewpoint or define the building’s relationship to its setting.

Evaluate each plausible location in context rather than relying on a label such as “back of house.” A position that limits impact on one view could affect a significant landscape feature, approach route, or district setting. Conversely, an addition visible from some viewpoints may be less visually dominant if its placement and form preserve the historic building’s primacy. These effects need to be considered together.

Where appropriate, options such as setting the addition back, offsetting its footprint, or using a small recessed connector can reduce its perceived impact. They are design moves to test, not universal solutions. Their value depends on the building’s form, the views that matter, the connection required, and what fabric would be altered to make them work.

Set scale and massing so the original building remains primary

Compare the proposed volume with the historic building’s form, envelope, massing, size, scale, and architectural features. The goal is not necessarily to make the new work smaller in every dimension; it is to ensure that the addition’s overall presence does not displace the historic building’s identity or primacy.

A larger or taller volume may sometimes appear subordinate because of its location or articulation, but placing it behind the original structure does not by itself resolve the impact. Assess how much of the addition can be seen, how its mass reads against the old building, and whether its arrangement competes with or supports the existing form. The NPS guidance stresses preserving the historic building’s primacy and identity, rather than applying a single dimensional rule.

Use drawings and views that help decision-makers understand the relationship from relevant vantage points. Compare the addition against the building and its setting, not only as an isolated architectural object. The resulting discussion should explain what the scale achieves for the museum brief and why the historic structure still reads clearly.

Make the new work legible without copying or clashing

Visitors should be able to understand that the extension is new, while still seeing it as a considered addition to the historic place. Exact duplication can blur the distinction between periods; an intentionally stark contrast can make the new volume overwhelm the building it is meant to support. The design task is to relate the two without pretending they are the same.

Possible tools include contemporary form, carefully related proportions, a setback, a small hyphen or connector, and material qualities that respond to the existing building. NPS examples include aligning the rhythm of new openings with the historic building and drawing on a related color range while differentiating the new volume. These are ways to establish a relationship, not a recipe that every project should follow.

Ontario’s principles make the distinction explicit: “Buildings or structures should be recognized as products of their own time, and new additions should not blur the distinction between old and new.” Read that alongside the NPS advice: new work should be distinguishable, but it should also respect the historic building’s scale and character. The result can be contemporary without being arbitrary.

Treat the connection to the old building as a major conservation decision

The junction between old and new affects both the architecture and the amount of historic fabric that must be changed. Study whether an existing doorway, including a blocked opening, could provide a route before proposing a new opening. NPS notes that using existing doors or enlarging windows may help limit fabric removal. Historic England states that it starts with a presumption against the loss of historic fabric and that a strong case is needed for new openings.

Historic England’s guidance on additions and extensions concerns historic places of worship, not museums. Its emphasis on carefully investigating how an extension meets existing fabric is a relevant conservation consideration, but it does not establish museum-specific requirements or substitute for local advice.

Compare connection options by where circulation crosses between the buildings and how much material or significant space each option would alter. A direct opening may be convenient but harmful in a sensitive room; a connector may reduce intervention in one location while affecting the setting or requiring more construction. Assess the actual consequences rather than assuming one connection type is inherently best.

Coordinate circulation and accessibility with the significance of the spaces being changed. The appropriate route and alterations depend on the building and the applicable local requirements, which the project team should establish early. The conservation assessment should inform where movement can be accommodated with least harm; it should not be used to leave the project’s access requirements unresolved.

Plan for care, removal, and future adaptation

Think about what happens if the addition is altered or removed in the future. NPS guidance for Standard 10 says the historic property’s essential form and integrity should remain unimpaired if new work is removed. Ontario also identifies reversibility and maintenance as conservation principles.

For a design team, reversibility is an objective to investigate at the connection and material interfaces, not a promise that every intervention can be undone without consequence. Consider which parts of the historic building are affected, how new work meets existing fabric, and whether removal could leave the property’s essential form and integrity intact. Record the reasoning behind the chosen approach.

Maintenance belongs in the same conversation as initial design. Ontario’s principles include ongoing maintenance, so compare proposals not only by appearance at opening but also by the care their materials and interfaces will require over time. The available guidance does not prescribe a particular material or maintenance interval; those decisions need to be made for the site and project.

Compare schemes using the same heritage and museum criteria

If the project has more than one credible scheme, assess each against the same questions. This helps prevent a striking architectural image or a convenient floor plan from obscuring the scheme’s impact on historic fabric and the setting.

Decision criterion Questions to ask
Heritage impact What significant fabric, spaces, views, landscape features, or setting would be lost or altered?
Scale and subordination How do size, massing, height, and visibility affect the original building’s primacy?
Old/new legibility Can a visitor identify the addition as contemporary without it copying or clashing with the historic work?
Connection to historic fabric Where does circulation cross between old and new, and how much existing material must change?
Future care and adaptation Could the intervention be removed with limited harm, and does the proposal support continuing maintenance?
Museum function and review context Does the scheme meet the defined needs, and can it proceed through the applicable planning and heritage process?

The criteria reflect the concerns raised in NPS and Ontario guidance and, for the junction, Historic England’s advice. They are not a numerical scoring system. If the team uses scores, explain the evidence and trade-offs behind them; a single total should not disguise a severe effect on a particularly significant feature.

Establish the applicable review process early

Planning and heritage consent depend on the project’s location, designation, and scope. The NPS discusses a rehabilitation addition in relation to its effects on the historic building and, where relevant, the historic district. In England, Historic England’s Advice Note 2 addresses changes to heritage assets in the planning and heritage-consent context.

Neither source establishes a universal legal requirement for museums in every country. Confirm which authority and consent process apply to the site, and involve the appropriate heritage and design expertise while alternatives are still open. That makes it possible to test the project’s needs and conservation effects against the actual review context rather than assuming a foreign guidance document determines the outcome.

What museum projects can—and cannot—show

Tate Modern: a documented design intention

In its own account of the Tate Modern project, Herzog & de Meuron describes a design that moved from an early idea of stacked glass boxes toward a more closed form, with a trapezoidal footprint, square termination, and brick façade. The architects say the brickwork system develops a differentiated language that distinguishes the old and new while relating them. This is the architects’ account of their design intention; it should not be presented as an independent evaluation of the finished result or as a template to copy.

British Museum Western Range: distinguish plans from completed work

The British Museum’s Western Range project page says Lina Ghotmeh’s team won the contract in February 2025. It describes aims that include contemporary galleries and modern research and collection-storage facilities, and said the winning concept would be developed toward a final design approach expected in mid-2026. That expected milestone is now past; the information stated here does not establish whether it was met. Treat the page as a description of an evolving project, not evidence of a completed design outcome.

Together, these examples illustrate why project status and attribution matter. An architect’s explanation is evidence of design intention; a museum’s project page can describe aims and a development stage. Neither should be turned into a claim about long-term performance or a universal solution for another historic building.
