A tiny amount of thin-bodied cyanoacrylate (CA) instant glue may help firm up tapped holes in wood, MDF, or plywood when vibration wears the threads and lets fasteners move. The method is specific to tapped holes: apply CA, use accelerator as directed, then run the matching tap through the hardened glue to clear the threads. It is a contributor tip, not a tested guarantee or a universal repair for stripped screw holes.
When this technique applies
WOOD Magazine published the method on February 21, 2019, attributing it to Floyd Calderwood of Belfast, Maine. Calderwood described bolts, screws, and threaded inserts in tapped holes in wood, MDF, and plywood that vibrated, enlarged the threads, and began to move. His advice was to put a tiny drop of thin-bodied CA in each hole and spritz it with accelerator, then make another pass with the tap after the glue hardens to clean the threads. He also suggested putting a bit of thread locker on the fastener. Read the WOOD Magazine tip.
This is not the same as repairing a common coarse-thread wood screw in a stripped pilot hole. First identify whether you have tapped threads or a damaged screw hole; the appropriate repair depends on that difference.
How to use CA on a tapped hole
- Confirm the hole type. Use this approach for an existing tapped hole in wood, MDF, or plywood—not as an automatic fix for every loose screw.
- Choose a suitable adhesive. Select a thin-bodied CA product whose label permits the intended material and conditions. Follow its current directions, including instructions for accelerator compatibility.
- Apply sparingly. Calderwood’s tip calls for a tiny drop of CA in the hole, followed by accelerator. Use the adhesive and accelerator according to their labels.
- Let it harden, then clear the threads. Run the matching tap through the hole again to clean hardened glue from the threads. Do not force a tap that does not match the existing thread.
- Consider thread locker separately. The contributor also suggested thread locker on the fastener; use a product appropriate to the fastener and application.
Choose the adhesive for the conditions
“CA” does not mean every product has the same approved uses or moisture resistance. Check the exact formulation’s label and manufacturer guidance rather than assuming a woodworking CA is suitable outdoors or in damp conditions.

- 🧩 REACH HAIRLINE GAPS — When ordinary glue sits on top of a narrow seam, the crack stays dry inside and the repair can fail as soon as it is handled. ALECPEA Thin CA Glue uses a fast-wicking liquid formula that travels into close-fitting joints and tiny cracks, helping models, wood pieces, jewelry findings, and small assemblies bond from within instead of leaving a bulky bead on the surface.
- ⚡ FINISH WITHOUT THE LONG HOLD — Waiting while tiny parts shift out of place wastes time and can ruin alignment. This thin cyanoacrylate glue sets in 15 seconds under typical conditions, so you can position, press, and move on with less clamping. Allow 12 hours for a full cure before heavy handling, making it practical for model building, workshop assembly, toy repair, craft projects, and quick household fixes.
- 🎯 CONTROL EVERY DROP — Fast-flowing glue can flood a miniature joint, stain a finished surface, or glue nearby details together before you can react. The 20g bottle includes 3 precision droppers that extend reach and help dispense tiny amounts exactly where needed. Use the capillary flow along narrow seams, metal fittings, crystal accents, and jewelry components for cleaner work with less overflow and cleanup.
- 🔩 REPAIR MORE WITH ONE BOTTLE — Reaching for the wrong adhesive can leave loose parts, repeated repairs, and half-finished projects on your bench. ALECPEA CA Glue bonds close-fitting surfaces including wood, metal, ceramic, crystal, rubber, jewelry components, and many plastics. Its cured bond holds up to routine handling and minor bumps, supporting DIY repairs, craft production, model assembly, and small-shop work.
- ✨ KEEP THE FINISH CLEAN — A thick ridge or cloudy buildup can turn a careful repair into an obvious eyesore, especially on miniatures, crystal accents, and decorative pieces. This clear thin super glue forms a low-profile bond line when applied sparingly, helping preserve the original look. The compact 20g single bottle is easier to store with less leftover product; wipe the tip, cap tightly, and keep upright after use.
- Alteco CA 712: Its manufacturer lists wood as a compatible material and wood cracks and holes among its uses. Alteco says bond strength depends on the bonded area and materials, notes possible whitening around the bond, and recommends a preliminary test. These statements apply to CA 712, not all CA adhesives. See Alteco’s CA 712 information.
- Titebond Instant Bond Thin: Titebond identifies this product as ethyl cyanoacrylate and says it is not intended for exterior use or likely moisture exposure. Its product page gives a five-second assembly time and a three-second initial-cure claim for this formulation; those are manufacturer claims, not a test of the tapped-hole repair. See Titebond’s product information.
When a screw hole is stripped instead
A stripped screw hole is a different problem: the original screw threads have damaged or displaced material in the pilot hole. One documented alternative is to dip three or four toothpicks in glue and insert them into the hole, as described in WoodPro’s repair instructions. That fills the damaged area rather than hardening existing tapped threads. The available sources do not establish that this approach and the CA-and-tap method are equivalent or rank one as stronger. See WoodPro’s stripped-hole instructions.

Follow the chosen adhesive’s current label and safety data. Alteco warns users to avoid skin and eye contact and to keep CA off clothing; it recommends ventilation during and after use and warns that large amounts on cloth can generate heat. The manufacturer also notes that results can vary, so test where appropriate. Alteco’s product guidance.
