The mobile bridge carries two lanes of traffic; instead of closing or diverting those lanes for the active work area, crews work underneath. The arrangement can keep daytime maintenance moving, but installation and relocation still require traffic controls.
How the rolling bridge works
The Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) describes the ASTRA Bridge as a mobile bridge designed for motorway maintenance. In practical terms, it separates the two activities vertically: vehicles cross on the elevated roadway, while road crews work on the surface below. The bridge is advanced along the motorway as work progresses.
During the 2024 A1 deployment, traffic crossed in two lanes at 60 km/h while work took place underneath. ASTRA said the bridge moved forward about 100 metres at night to reach the next section of road. That movement is a planned operation, not a rolling passage under normal traffic conditions.
What changed between the pilot and later deployments
2022: first deployment on the A1
ASTRA first deployed the bridge in 2022 on the A1 between Recherswil and Luterbach, in the direction of Bern. The pilot demonstrated a way to carry out maintenance during the day and reduce construction noise at night. ASTRA also said the project showed potential to improve traffic flow; these were the authority’s reported observations, not the results of an independent comparative study. 2024: longer, gentler ramps on the A1
Before the 2024 deployment, ASTRA lengthened the ramps by about ten metres on each side and reduced their angle. The authority said these changes substantially reduced impacts experienced during the pilot. The bridge operated with two lanes at 60 km/h. ASTRA’s 2024 deployment information.
2026: GPS upgrade on the A2
ASTRA’s overview describes a third deployment in 2026 on the A2 between Arisdorf and Giebenach. The bridge was 260 metres long and had 180 wheels; ASTRA reported a GPS upgrade for more precise control of those wheels. Traffic crossed above the work at 60 km/h. The planned operating period ended in August 2026, so this description concerns that deployment rather than a claim that the bridge is currently operating. ASTRA’s overview and deployment details.

How it differs from a conventional work zone
The main difference is where traffic runs while repairs proceed. In a conventional arrangement, the work zone and traffic lanes occupy the same road surface, so lanes may need to be shifted, narrowed or closed around the work. With the ASTRA Bridge, traffic passes above the active work area. For the 2024 A1 deployment, ASTRA reported a 1.5 km work zone under the bridge, compared with 6 km for a conventional arrangement, and characterized the speed reduction for drivers as brief. What drivers and road crews should expect
For drivers
- Traffic can continue over the active repair area, but drivers still cross the bridge at a controlled speed. ASTRA reports 60 km/h for the 2024 and 2026 deployments.
- The bridge does not eliminate restrictions. Its installation took place overnight, and during the 2024 bridge movement, traffic was reduced to one lane on the hard shoulder.
For the work site
- Crews work beneath the bridge while traffic passes above, enabling daytime maintenance in the deployments described by ASTRA.
- After a section is complete, the bridge can be moved forward to the next work area; ASTRA reported nighttime moves of about 100 metres in 2024.
What the 2024 traffic figures do—and do not—show
ASTRA reported that the bridge carried about 4.5 million vehicles, including about 500,000 trucks, over 147 operating days during its 2024 A1 deployment. These are counts reported by ASTRA for that specific operation, not independent measurements or a forecast for other roads. ASTRA’s 2024 deployment information.
ASTRA has described reduced night noise and improved worker safety following the 2022 pilot, but the information cited here does not establish an independent comparison of safety, traffic performance, cost or noise against conventional work zones. The bridge is best understood as a way to separate traffic from maintenance work in particular motorway projects—not as a guarantee of disruption-free roadworks.
