The amount depends on the roof and sunlight, household use, system cost and financing, and how the utility credits excess power. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all savings or carbon figure: estimate production for the home, then compare it with bills and the utility’s export rules.
How solar panels can lower an electricity bill
Panels generate electricity during daylight. The home can use that power as it is produced, reducing the amount it draws from the grid. If the system produces more than the home needs at a given time, surplus electricity may be sent to the grid. The utility’s rules determine whether and how that exported power is credited.
Savings depend on electricity use, system size and output, the roof’s orientation and sun exposure, local utility rates, export compensation, and whether the system is bought, financed, leased, or contracted through a power-purchase agreement. As the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) puts it: “The amount of money you can save with solar depends upon how much electricity you consume, the size of your solar energy system, if you choose to buy or lease your system, and how much power it is able to generate given the direction your roof faces and how much sunlight hits it.” DOE’s Homeowner’s Guide to Solar gives scenarios, not guaranteed outcomes or a national average.
For illustration, a DOE example dated August 1, 2024, describes a California homeowner saving about $200 per month on electricity and reaching payback in less than five years. A separate illustrative Ohio lease scenario describes $600 in net annual savings after a fixed monthly panel payment and avoided electricity costs. These are location- and scenario-specific examples, not forecasts for other homes.

Pre-drilled mounting holes make installation with compatible mounting hardware straightforward.
What determines whether a home is a good fit?
Roof condition, shape, and shade
Roof size, shape, slope, age, and shading affect how much equipment can fit and how much electricity it can produce. DOE says south-facing roofs with slopes of 15–40 degrees typically perform best, but other roofs may also be suitable. If the roof will need replacement soon, include that work in the project decision rather than treating it as an unrelated future cost.
Estimate production for the address
Start with NREL’s PVWatts Calculator, which estimates energy production and cost of energy for grid-connected PV systems. It is an initial estimate, not a substitute for a site-specific installer proposal. Compare the projected generation with the household’s actual electricity use and bills; a larger system is not automatically more economical if much of its output is exported at a low credit rate.

How utility rules affect the value of solar
Before choosing a system, ask the utility how it treats electricity sent to the grid. Net metering or another export-credit arrangement may be available, but eligibility and compensation vary. In particular, exported electricity may be credited at a different rate from the price the household pays to buy electricity.
- Is net metering or another export-credit arrangement available for this address?
- Which customers and system sizes qualify, and are there limits or application requirements?
- What rate applies to exported electricity, and can that rate change?
- How do credits appear on bills, and do unused credits carry over or expire?
Use the utility’s answers in the savings estimate. A proposal that assumes exported power earns the full retail electricity rate can overstate savings if the actual credit is lower.

- UPGRADE 2.0 SOLAR CABLE: Increase a free pair of separate solar connectors. One pair (1 piece black + 1 piece red) 20 Feet 10AWG Solar Extension Cable. BougeRV promises an 18-month technical support for the solar extension cable.
- MINIMIZE POWER LOSS: Made with tin-coated pure cooper, the tinned-coated pure cooper cable has good electrical conductivity, compared with bare copper wire, its corrosion resistance and oxidation performance are stronger, also can greatly extend the service life of cables. Compared with 14AWG and 12AWG cables, using a 10AWG solar extension cable can minimize power loss in your solar panel system.
- HIGH SECURITY: BougeRV solar cable is certified by TÜV and UL. The dual sheath is made with XLPE insulation, which ensures it can work stably from -40℉ to 194℉, while PVC wire can only handle 158℉ at maximum. BougeRV solar cable wire is UV resistant, which makes the cable much better for running in outdoor solar arrays.
- IP67 WATERPROOF & DUSTPROOF: An IP67 waterproof ring on the male solar connector provides a tight seal against water and dust, preventing corrosion. The built‑in lock ensures a secure hold, and the PV cable is suitable for outdoor use in temperatures from -40℉ to 194℉
- QUICK AND EASY CONNECTION: One end has the connectors installed, and the other end is bare wire in case you need to hook up to a controller. Come with an extra connector for extended installation. This solar extension cable can help you to position your solar panels anywhere with ease and flexibility. The solar connector is plug-and-play. Press fingers to either side of the built-in lock on the male connector can connect and disconnect the connector easily, without using other tools.
How solar can reduce a household’s carbon footprint
When a home uses solar generation instead of drawing electricity from the grid, it can avoid emissions associated with grid electricity. The size of that benefit depends on where the home is and when generation displaces grid power. EPA distinguishes emissions factors for avoided and consumed electricity and cautions that national-average factors may not accurately represent a particular region. Use EPA’s greenhouse-gas equivalencies calculator and emissions information as a starting point, favoring regional factors where available. A single national carbon-reduction figure should not be applied to every household.
Compare ownership, financing, and subscription options
Compare the full costs and assumptions rather than relying on a headline savings estimate or payback claim. DOE notes that an outright purchase can have a lower total cost than a loan, lease, or power-purchase agreement, but the best fit depends on the household and the specific offer.

| Option | What to compare | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Cash purchase | Installed price, projected generation, estimated bill savings, and payback assumptions | DOE says buying outright can have a lower total cost than financing or contracting options; compare the actual offers. |
| Loan | Installed cost, interest and fees, payment schedule, and total amount paid | Separate the loan payment from projected utility-bill savings to understand net household costs. |
| Lease | Fixed payment, any escalation terms, contract length, and projected bill savings | Check whether the payment changes over time and how the contract affects a home sale or roof work. |
| Power-purchase agreement (PPA) | Contract price for electricity, any escalation terms, duration, and utility export credit | Understand the payment terms and who receives compensation for exported electricity. |
| Community solar | Subscription cost, bill-credit terms, contract duration, and cancellation rules | Can suit renters or homes with unsuitable roofs; availability and terms vary by location. |
Across proposals, check projected annual generation, how much electricity is expected to be used at home versus exported, the utility’s export-credit rate, roof replacement needs, and whether battery storage is desired for backup or shifting solar energy to later use. Treat payback as one comparison measure based on stated assumptions, not a guaranteed date.

Allow for output to decline over time
DOE reports that most rooftop systems maintain at least 80% of their initial power output for at least 25 years, with output diminishing slightly over time. This is general guidance, not a warranty for any particular product. Review the equipment warranty and the installer’s production assumptions for the system being proposed.

Verify current incentives
For U.S. taxpayers, IRS guidance says the residential clean energy credit is unavailable for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. Older consumer information may describe earlier federal-credit rules. Check current IRS residential clean energy credit guidance, along with state, local, and utility incentives that apply to the project’s location and timing.
Quick Recap
A practical way to estimate your own outcome
- Establish current use and cost. Review utility bills to find electricity consumption and the applicable rates.
- Assess the roof. Check shade, condition, size, orientation, and slope; account for likely roof replacement.
- Estimate generation. Use PVWatts for an address-based starting estimate, then request a custom site estimate.
- Confirm export treatment. Ask the utility about export compensation, eligibility, and system or customer limits.
- Compare complete proposals. Review installed or subscription costs, financing terms, annual generation, self-use and exports, and the assumptions behind savings and payback.
- Estimate emissions impact. Use regional electricity emissions factors where possible rather than applying a national figure to the home.
- Check incentives for the project date and location. Verify federal guidance as well as state, local, and utility programs before including incentives in the calculation.
