Siding work starts with inspecting the wall and planning how water will drain—not with attaching boards. The right sequence and details depend on the siding product, the wall assembly, and local building requirements. These six tips explain what homeowners should expect before and during installation.

1. Inspect the wall before covering it

Before new siding goes on, establish the project scope and identify repairs that could affect the work or its sequence. Hidden or necessary repairs can change how long installation takes, so ask how the contractor will address them if they are found.

As a product-specific reference, James Hardie says installation of its siding typically takes seven to 14 days, depending on home size and essential repairs. That is the manufacturer’s estimate for its products, not a general schedule for every material or home. James Hardie’s siding FAQ

2. Plan the weather barrier and flashing before siding

Siding is part of a wall’s exterior, but water management depends on the layers and details behind and around it. The weather-resistive barrier (WRB), its seams, and flashing need to work together to direct water outward. Follow the selected siding system’s current instructions for the wall assembly; details can vary by product and location.

James Hardie’s guidance addresses coordinating the WRB and flashing, including flashing over the WRB at inside and outside corners. The manufacturer’s FAQ and its Hardie Trim installation guidance provide product-specific direction.

3. Give openings and transitions deliberate details

Windows, doors, wall penetrations, roof intersections, the bottom of the wall near grade, and places where walls meet other materials are all locations where water-control details matter. They are not interchangeable, and there is no single clearance or flashing detail that fits every siding, wall, and jurisdiction.
