Skoda Contracting’s growth has been gradual: the Flanders, New Jersey, company expanded from pipeline welding into gas, water, sewer and underground electric work, then into Pennsylvania and the Washington, D.C.–Maryland area. An Engineering News-Record profile published October 6, 2026 traces that expansion through projects including a complex New Jersey gas pipeline—and describes how a pipe-fusion documentation problem prompted changes to inspections and field procedures.
How Skoda Contracting expanded its services and footprint
Founded in 1962, according to ENR, Skoda Contracting has operated for more than 60 years. Its starting point was pipeline welding; it developed into an underground utility contractor serving New Jersey gas companies and later added work in water, sewer and underground electric construction.
The company’s expansion into water and sewer work included establishing a dedicated water construction department. It also grew beyond New Jersey, building divisions serving Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley and the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. ENR presents this as measured growth rather than expansion for its own sake.
CEO Dane Evans told ENR that the company selected projects and scopes suited to its capabilities, seeking to avoid overextension and unnecessary risk. On staffing, he said: “We have a culture of choosing the right people and allowing them to grow without pressure.” That is Evans’s description of the company’s approach in the interview, not an independently audited policy.

What Skoda’s projects show about its work
Flocktown Interconnection: a complex gas pipeline in New Jersey
For Elizabethtown Gas, Skoda completed the three-phase Flocktown Interconnection in Hackettstown, New Jersey. ENR reports that the steel pipeline project covered 7.5 miles and finished one month ahead of schedule. The work included more than 40 offsets, bridge hangings, narrow streets and directional drilling. The project crew averaged more than 300 linear feet of pipeline per day, according to ENR.
Evans described the project as especially complicated because of the constrained streets, drilling and lines hung on bridges. The reported schedule result and production rate belong to this project; they should not be read as a general performance benchmark for Skoda or other contractors.

Water and sewer work in Maryland
Skoda’s multiyear Area Wide Water and Sewer Connection Contract covered Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties, Maryland. ENR describes the award as an expansion beyond gas projects, supported by the company’s investment in a dedicated water construction department.
Utility relocation for Maryland’s Purple Line
For Washington Gas, Skoda was selected to relocate gas pipeline utilities in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties to clear the corridor for Maryland’s Purple Line light rail project. ENR characterizes the work as coordination-intensive, placing utility construction alongside a major public infrastructure program.

How a pipe-fusion documentation problem changed field practices
ENR’s account of the Pennsylvania work includes a setback as well as growth. On several projects, an employee did not follow proper documentation procedures for plastic-pipe joining, leading to rework. Evans told ENR that the company initially reacted defensively, then worked constructively with the utility. Over several years, Skoda replaced pipeline involving the employee’s work at its own expense.
ENR reports that Skoda responded by changing project supervision, asking supervisors to conduct more deliberate jobsite inspections and creating a separate inspection branch within its client safety and education division. The company also began documenting utility procedures on iPads, tracking metrics and scoring field managers and crews partly on adherence to procedures, alongside efficiency and profitability. The profile does not explain how the business-category and geographic entries relate to one another or to its $105 million projected revenue figure, so they should not be summed or treated as a reconciliation.
