Rice mills can use the husks separated from paddy as fuel. In a common combined heat and power (CHP) arrangement, a boiler burns the husks to make steam; some steam drives a turbine-generator to produce electricity, while steam extracted from or exhausted by the turbine supplies process heat. A separate option, gasification, converts prepared husks into a combustible gas that must be cleaned before it is used.

What happens to rice husks after milling?

When a mill processes paddy rice, it separates the outer husk from the grain. Rather than treating that residue only as something to remove, a mill can use it as an on-site fuel. FAO’s clean-energy technology report estimates that the husk is around 20 percent of paddy weight. That is a share of the incoming paddy by weight, not a measure of the energy a mill can recover or of the electricity a particular facility will generate.

Using husks at the mill links a local fuel stream to the facility’s own energy needs. The useful outputs depend on the conversion equipment and its configuration: direct combustion can provide boiler heat and, in a CHP system, electricity as well as process steam or hot water. Gasification instead produces a combustible gas for compatible heat or power equipment. Neither route has a universal output or performance figure that applies to every mill.

FAO’s report cites an estimate of about 120 million tonnes of rice husk produced globally in 2012, attributed there to Yoon and colleagues (2012). This is a historical estimate, not a current annual production total, and it does not indicate how much husk is available to any one mill.

How direct-combustion rice husk CHP works

In a direct-combustion system, the husk is burned in a boiler. The released heat raises steam, and the steam can be routed through a turbine connected to an alternator. The turbine-generator converts part of the steam’s energy into electricity. Steam can also be extracted from the turbine or discharged at a useful pressure to serve mill process needs. This combination of electricity and useful heat is called combined heat and power, or cogeneration.

The arrangement matters because a mill may need both power and heat. A steam turbine can generate electricity while steam at an appropriate stage or outlet remains available for process use. The RECP rice mill manual describes a high-pressure boiler, an extraction or back-pressure turbine, and an alternator as components of such an arrangement. The exact balance of electricity and process steam depends on the system design and the mill’s demand; the source does not establish one standard configuration or output for all facilities.

The energy path, from husk to useful output

  1. Supply the fuel. Husk separated during milling is collected and handled in a way suited to the selected plant. The amount and reliability of the supply matter to whether the system can serve the mill consistently.
  2. Burn the husk in a boiler. Direct combustion releases heat in the boiler, which uses that heat to raise steam.
  3. Use steam for power generation. Steam drives a turbine linked to an alternator, producing electricity for the mill’s electrical needs.
  4. Deliver process heat. Depending on the turbine and steam-system arrangement, extracted or back-pressure steam can supply process heat, including steam or hot-water needs described for a mill.
  5. Remove and manage combustion residue. Combustion leaves ash. Its properties and deposits affect equipment care and heat transfer, so residue handling and maintenance must be part of operating planning.

FAO describes rice husk boiler use for electricity that powers milling operations, while the RECP manual details the boiler–turbine–alternator CHP arrangement. These sources establish the process, but they do not provide a universal boiler size, turbine rating, efficiency, capital cost, or electricity-to-heat ratio.

How gasification differs from burning husks in a boiler

Gasification is a different conversion route, not another name for boiler combustion. Prepared husks are heated with limited oxygen, producing a combustible gas often called producer gas or syngas. Before that gas is used, it needs cleaning. Depending on the design, suitable end-use equipment can include a boiler, furnace, or engine-generator.

The distinction is practical: a direct-combustion CHP plant burns husk in its boiler and uses the resulting steam, while a gasification plant first makes gas and then uses cleaned gas in compatible equipment. Gas cleaning is part of the gasification process, not an optional finishing step. Feed preparation, gas cleaning, and the capabilities of the chosen end-use equipment all affect whether the route is suitable for a particular mill.

Gasification steps

  1. Prepare the husk for the gasifier. Preparation must match the equipment. FAO’s gasification account lists drying, shredding, or briquetting as examples of possible preparation steps; they are not a universal recipe for every system.
  2. Convert it under limited oxygen. The gasifier heats the prepared material in controlled, oxygen-limited conditions to produce combustible gas rather than simply burning the husk as boiler fuel.
  3. Clean the gas. Producer gas must be cleaned before it is sent to the selected equipment. Tar and particulate control are among the comparison points identified for gasification projects.
  4. Use the cleaned gas. Depending on the system, the gas can serve heat equipment or compatible power equipment. The gasifier itself does not guarantee a particular end-use output.

A 1994 FAO-hosted study by Zhang Baozhao and Xu Yicheng reported 5.59 kW output and 52.4% cold gas efficiency for the particular gasifier-engine system it described. Those are measurements from one study setup, not typical commercial-plant specifications, a performance guarantee, or a basis for predicting output at a mill without project-specific information.

Comparing the two conversion routes

Question Direct combustion with steam-turbine CHP Gasification
What happens to the husk? It is burned in a boiler to raise steam. Prepared husk is heated with limited oxygen to make producer gas.
What carries energy to the next stage? Steam from the boiler drives a turbine-generator; steam can also serve process needs. Cleaned producer gas is delivered to compatible heat or power equipment.
Potential useful outputs Electricity plus process steam or hot water, subject to system design. Combustible gas for heat or use in suitable power equipment.
Key design and operating considerations Mill heat and power demand, boiler and turbine configuration, dependable husk supply, ash handling, and maintenance. Feed preparation, gas cleaning, tar and particulate control, end-use equipment, operating capability, and environmental management.
What the cited sources do not establish A universal efficiency, cost, plant size, or output split for every mill. A universal commercial output or efficiency; the cited 1994 measurements apply to one described test system.

FAO’s Bioenergy and Food Security (BEFS) appraisal treats residue preparation, combustion, gasification, and CHP as distinct options and recommends technical, economic, and socioeconomic assessment. That is a useful way to compare routes: identify the mill’s needs and constraints, then assess the design against them. The available evidence does not support naming one route as best for every rice mill.

What a mill should assess before choosing a system

A project decision is not only a choice between a boiler and a gasifier. It is a question of whether the fuel supply, conversion equipment, energy demand, site conditions, costs, and operating capability fit together. The following checks turn that question into a practical assessment without assuming a particular plant size or financial return.

  • Husk supply: establish what quantity is actually available to the proposed system and how dependable that supply is. Husk is produced as a milling residue, but the global production estimate does not tell an individual mill how much it can use.
  • Energy demand: identify the mill’s electricity and process-heat needs. A CHP concept is relevant where both outputs are useful, but the equipment configuration must match demand rather than rely on an assumed standard heat-to-power balance.
  • Conversion route: compare direct combustion and gasification as separate process chains. For gasification, account for fuel preparation and gas cleaning as well as the compatibility of downstream equipment.
  • Plant and site conditions: evaluate the boiler or gasifier configuration, turbine-generator or gas end-use equipment, and the practical requirements of operating the selected arrangement at the mill.
  • Costs and wider impacts: assess economics and socioeconomic considerations alongside technical feasibility. The cited sources do not establish current project costs or a general return on investment.
  • Residue and maintenance plan: include ash handling and equipment maintenance for direct combustion. For gasification, include gas-cleaning and environmental-management needs in the operating plan.

A sound appraisal should compare a complete system with the mill’s actual conditions, rather than compare only the headline equipment or a test result. FAO’s BEFS framing explicitly separates technology pathways and calls for technical, economic, and socioeconomic assessment.

Ash and maintenance are part of the process design

Rice husk combustion leaves ash, and its high silica content creates an equipment concern. FAO notes that rice husk ash can be abrasive and corrosive to metals. Ash deposits on combustion-chamber walls can also reduce heat-transfer efficiency. These issues make ash removal, inspection, and maintenance relevant to the practical performance of a boiler system.

That does not mean ash should be treated as harmless, nor does the evidence establish that it has a valuable use in every project. A mill should plan for the residue as an operating and maintenance matter, and any proposed reuse would need its own evidence and site-specific assessment.

What the available performance figures do—and do not—tell you

The figures associated with rice husks answer different questions and should not be conflated. The estimate that husk is around 20 percent of paddy weight describes the fraction of incoming paddy represented by the outer husk. The 2012 global estimate describes historical worldwide output. Neither predicts electricity generation at a given mill.

Likewise, the 5.59 kW output and 52.4% cold gas efficiency reported in the 1994 gasifier-engine study belong to its described setup. They cannot be transferred directly to a commercial installation or treated as expected results for a different feed preparation method, gasifier, engine, or operating context. The cited sources do not establish a current typical efficiency, installed capacity, emissions-compliance result, or current cost for rice-husk energy systems.

The study authors also cautioned, “However, the environmental impact of the system should be studied.” That statement concerned the system described in their paper. It is a reason to assess environmental effects for a proposed system rather than a general verdict about every rice-husk plant.

How to explain the choice clearly

For a mill considering on-site energy, the central question is not simply whether rice husks can make electricity. They can be used as boiler fuel in a steam-turbine CHP arrangement, where steam can serve both a generator and process needs. Alternatively, gasification can convert prepared husks into cleaned producer gas for suitable heat or power equipment. The appropriate choice depends on supply, demand, equipment, site, cost, maintenance, and the mill’s ability to operate the system.

Do not treat a historical global residue estimate or the result of a single experimental gasifier-engine setup as a plant design basis. A project appraisal should use the mill’s own fuel availability and energy requirements, compare complete conversion pathways, and account for ash or gas-cleaning demands and environmental management.
