For a recirculating indoor hydroponic tower, “watering” means checking and topping up the reservoir, not pouring water onto each plant. Check the level at least weekly; a daily glance is safer while plants are growing quickly or the room is warm. Add water before the solution falls below the pump’s minimum operating level. Published guidance ranges from roughly 10–20 days between indoor refills to two or three weeks for a full reservoir, but crop load, growth stage and temperature can shorten that interval.
If your “plant tower” is a soil-filled vertical planter, do not use this schedule. The guidance below applies to towers that recirculate nutrient solution from a reservoir through a pump.

Practical rule: check the reservoir regularly, refill at your model’s stated threshold (often around half full), keep the pump completely submerged and use the pH range in that tower’s manual.

First identify what kind of tower you have
Indoor towers are sold under similar names but use different watering methods. A recirculating hydroponic tower has a tank or reservoir, a pump and vertical growing sections. The pump lifts nutrient solution to the top; the solution flows past the plant roots and returns to the tank. Because the roots are supplied by that circulating solution, routine care focuses on reservoir level, nutrient strength and pH rather than hand-watering every planting pocket.

A soil-filled vertical planter has no shared nutrient reservoir. Each pocket may need water according to its potting mix, plant and room conditions. The refill intervals and pump warnings in this article do not establish a watering schedule for that type of planter.
How often to check and refill a hydroponic tower
There are two separate decisions: how often to inspect the level and how often the tank will actually need a top-up. Inspection should be frequent enough to catch a falling level before the pump is exposed. The following published recommendations describe different systems and conditions, so treat them as planning references rather than a universal calendar.
| Guidance source | Inspection or refill guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Plants for Human Health Institute, North Carolina State University, “Tower Garden” | Check the water level weekly; add water and nutrients when the reservoir is approximately half full. | Dropping below the pump level can damage the pump motor. The guide gives a pH range of 5.5–7. |
| Tower Garden US, “How to Ensure Your Indoor Tower Garden Is a Success” | Indoor refills may be needed every 10–20 days. | The estimate depends on crop and growth stage. The article gives a pH range of 5.5–6.5. |
| Tower Garden UK, “Frequently Asked Questions – Tower Garden” | A full reservoir typically lasts two to three weeks. | Duration depends on outside temperature and crop type; hot months increase water and nutrient use. Keep the submersible pump completely submerged and do not let the tank drop more than halfway. |
The different intervals are not a contradiction. A lightly planted tower in a cool room can use solution more slowly than a mature tower in a warm room. “Every 10–20 days” and “two to three weeks” are rough manufacturer estimates, while the weekly check is a monitoring instruction. The reservoir level in front of you is the deciding information.
Use a shorter interval when conditions change
- Warm weather or a warm indoor room: plants and the reservoir lose and consume water faster. Tower Garden specifically notes higher use during hot months.
- Rapid growth: larger plants transpire more and can consume solution faster than newly planted seedlings.
- A heavier crop load: more plants sharing one tank generally means more water and nutrients are removed between checks.
- A change in pump cycle or airflow: follow the operating settings for your model and watch the level after any adjustment.
When any of these conditions appears, keep the published interval only as a rough expectation and inspect sooner.
How to add water without running the pump dry
Use this sequence for a recirculating tower. Your owner’s manual takes priority if it specifies a different fill mark, nutrient order or pump procedure.

- Confirm the system type and locate the reservoir. Find the tank, pump and marked minimum or maximum levels. Do not pour water into individual planting sites as a substitute for restoring the reservoir.
- Inspect the level before the scheduled date. Look at the tank daily if you are following Tower Garden’s maintenance recommendation, or at least weekly as advised by North Carolina State University. Check sooner during warm weather and active growth.
- Protect the pump. If the solution is near the minimum mark, refill before the pump is exposed. North Carolina State University warns that operating below pump level can damage the motor. Tower Garden’s FAQ likewise says its submersible pump must remain completely submerged.
- Follow the model’s pump-shutoff procedure while opening the tank. Avoid any operation that allows the pump to run without adequate liquid. If your manual gives a specific switch or timer sequence, use that sequence.
- Add the correct water. Add enough to restore the level required by your tower, stopping before its maximum mark. Do not assume that every top-up requires the same volume; plant use and evaporation determine how much is missing.
- Add nutrients only as the model directs. The North Carolina State University guide instructs growers to add water and nutrients at approximately half full. Tower Garden instructions refer to its Mineral Blend and direct users to the product instructions. Measure and mix according to that system’s directions rather than guessing a dose.
- Restart and observe circulation. Once the pump is safely submerged, restore the normal cycle and verify that solution reaches the top and returns to the reservoir. Stop and consult the model manual if flow does not resume normally.
- Check pH after a refill. Test with the method specified for your tower, record the result and adjust only with the approved instructions for that system.
If the reservoir is still above the manufacturer’s minimum, topping up early is preferable to waiting for a calendar date. The goal is a safe operating level, not squeezing every possible day from a fill.
Keep the pump covered and the reservoir at the right threshold
Manufacturers describe the threshold differently. North Carolina State University’s tower guide uses approximately half full as the point to add water and nutrients and warns against falling below pump level. Tower Garden’s FAQ says not to let its tank drop more than halfway and to keep the submersible pump completely submerged. These statements should be read as model-specific operating limits, not as a single rule for every tower sold under the same general description.

If you cannot identify the minimum level, contact the tower manufacturer before relying on a guessed line. A pump that begins drawing air can lose circulation, and operating it below its safe level can damage the motor. Refill before that point, especially if nobody will be present to check the tower for several days.
Check pH using your tower’s own range
Hydroponic plants depend on a suitable nutrient-solution pH. The published ranges in the available tower instructions are not identical:
| Instruction set | Published pH range | Testing direction |
|---|---|---|
| Tower Garden US indoor guidance | 5.5–6.5 | Monitor pH as part of indoor tower care. |
| Plants for Human Health Institute, North Carolina State University | 5.5–7 | Test with pH strips and follow the tower instructions. |
Do not average the ranges or treat the wider range as permission to ignore your model’s instructions. Use the range supplied for your tower. Tower Garden’s maintenance guidance calls for regular pH checks, including weekly checks and checks after refilling. North Carolina State University specifically mentions pH test strips. A refill is a useful time to test because adding water and nutrients can change the solution’s pH.

A practical inspection routine
Daily quick check
- Look at the reservoir level and confirm it remains above the pump’s safe operating point.
- Notice whether the pump is circulating solution through the tower during its programmed cycle.
- Pay particular attention during hot weather, after transplanting, or when plants enter a rapid growth phase.
Tower Garden’s maintenance article recommends daily water checks. A daily glance takes less time than recovering from a dry-running pump or a tower that has stopped circulating.

- Perform the more deliberate level check recommended by North Carolina State University.
- Test pH according to your model’s instructions; Tower Garden’s maintenance guidance includes weekly and post-refill checks.
- Compare the current level with the previous check so you can recognize a faster-than-usual drop.
- Confirm that the pump, timer and return flow are operating as specified in the setup instructions.
At a refill
- Restore the reservoir before the liquid reaches the pump minimum.
- Add nutrients only in the amount and sequence specified for the system.
- Mix and circulate according to the manual, then test pH.
- Write down the date and level. Your own refill history will be more useful than a generic estimate once you have observed the tower through different seasons.
Why a tower may need water sooner than expected
A published 10–20-day indoor estimate or a two-to-three-week full-reservoir estimate assumes conditions that may not match your room. Outside temperature is explicitly identified by Tower Garden as a factor, and crop type and growth stage also affect consumption. Seedlings, mature fruiting plants and a densely planted tower will not necessarily use the same amount each day.
If the level falls unusually quickly, first check for an obvious leak, a loose return connection or a pump cycle that is not operating as expected. Then review room temperature, plant size and planting density. If the loss cannot be explained by plant use or evaporation, stop relying on the normal interval and use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting or service guidance for that model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the level is low or circulation stops
The pump is still submerged but the level is approaching the minimum
Add water promptly to the model’s stated refill point. If the instructions call for adding nutrients at approximately half full, follow that instruction and then test pH. Do not wait for the next weekly check.
The pump is exposed or making a dry-running sound
Stop the pump using the model’s normal control, refill above the safe level and do not restart it until the pump is fully submerged. North Carolina State University’s warning about motor damage makes this an urgent condition rather than a routine reminder.

The reservoir was refilled but plants still receive no flow
Confirm that the pump is powered, the timer is in its normal program and the intake remains submerged. Check the setup instructions for your model before disassembling anything. If circulation does not return, use the manufacturer’s pump-troubleshooting guidance and match any replacement part to the exact tower model.
The pH result is outside the stated range
Retest to rule out a sampling or strip-reading error, then use only the adjustment method and products approved in your tower instructions. Because the published acceptable ranges differ between systems, do not apply another model’s target automatically.
When the tower will be unattended
Before leaving the tower for a trip, do not plan around the longest advertised interval alone. Check the tank, refill at the model’s safe threshold, verify the pump cycle and confirm that the pump is completely submerged. A warm room or actively growing crop can consume solution faster than a two- or three-week estimate. If nobody can inspect the reservoir, arrange a check at an interval that keeps the level comfortably above the pump minimum.
Between plantings and seasonal changes
Tower Garden’s FAQ includes guidance for draining and refilling between plantings. Treat that as a separate maintenance task from ordinary top-ups: follow the model’s procedure when a crop cycle ends rather than simply carrying an old solution indefinitely. Seasonal changes also justify a fresh look at your routine. A schedule that worked in a cool period may require more frequent checks when the room or outdoor conditions become hot.
Bottom line for setting your schedule
Start with a daily visual check and never allow the reservoir to approach the pump’s uncovered level. Use a weekly check as the minimum routine identified by North Carolina State University, and expect that an indoor tower may need a refill about every 10–20 days or roughly every two to three weeks under the conditions described by Tower Garden. Those figures are planning estimates, not guarantees. Your tower’s level marks, pump instructions, nutrient directions and pH range determine the final procedure.
