There is no single grease interval for every tractor and trailer fitting. Follow the maintenance schedule for the exact truck, trailer, axle, suspension, fifth wheel and grease point. As a broad industry estimate—not an OEM requirement—Graco says most tractor-trailers should have their manual lubrication points greased about every 12,000–24,000 miles, with the fifth wheel serviced more frequently. The applicable equipment manual takes precedence.
Why one truck-wide interval does not work
A tractor-trailer is a combination of components, and each may have its own inspection and lubrication schedule. The truck’s configuration also determines which grease points are present. A schedule for one fifth wheel, axle or suspension cannot safely be assumed to apply to another component simply because both are fitted to the same vehicle.

Depending on the equipment, truck grease points may include kingpins, drag links, tie-rod ends, spring pins and shackles, slack adjusters and S-cams on vehicles with drum brakes, and fifth-wheel pivots and plate. A trailer’s axle and suspension may have separate requirements. The fitting’s presence, its manufacturer and model, and the instructions for that specific component all matter.

It is useful as a broad reference when considering how often such maintenance may be needed, but it does not establish the correct interval for a particular vehicle or component. Graco also says fifth wheels require more frequent attention, without making that range a fifth-wheel schedule.

How to find the right schedule for your equipment
Build the maintenance plan from the manuals for the equipment actually installed, rather than using one interval for every grease fitting. Check the truck and trailer documentation as well as the manuals for separately specified components, such as an axle, suspension or fifth wheel. If equipment has been replaced or modified, verify that the schedule matches the component now on the vehicle.
- Identify the component and fitting. Record which vehicle it belongs to, what component it serves, and the component make and model where available. Do not assume a fitting’s interval from its location or appearance.
- Find the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. Look for the schedule and procedure for that exact component. Distinguish an instruction to inspect from one to apply grease: checking a contact surface does not necessarily mean the manual calls for greasing it at every inspection.
- Capture both time- and distance-based limits. When a manual specifies both, preserve the wording, including whether the task is due at a stated time or distance, whichever occurs first or more frequently. Do not convert the interval into a mileage-only rule.
- Record the specified lubricant and application method. Note the grease type and any restriction on the tool or pressure. A specification for one component is not a universal grease recommendation.
- Add conditions that bring service forward. Include any instructions for washing, contamination, severe operating conditions or work that removes lubricant. These events may call for attention before the routine interval.
- Keep the schedule with the equipment record. Track the component, task, due threshold, lubricant, method and relevant service triggers. This makes separate schedules visible instead of collapsing them into a single reminder for the whole truck.
If the applicable manual or component identity is not available, do not treat the general mileage estimate as a substitute. Establish the correct instructions for the installed equipment before setting a definitive service interval.

What a model-specific fifth-wheel schedule looks like
The SAF-HOLLAND FW20 owner manual, revised November 19, 2015, illustrates why a fifth wheel needs its own plan. It sets different schedules for contact-surface checks, routine lubrication and more thorough locking-mechanism service. These are FW20 instructions, not a universal schedule for fifth wheels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| FW20 task | Manual interval or requirement |
|---|---|
| Check fifth-wheel-to-trailer contact surfaces | Weekly or every 4,000 km, whichever is more frequent |
| Inspect fifth-wheel-to-kingpin contact surfaces and the front lock | Weekly or every 4,000 km, whichever is more frequent |
| Maintain lubricant on trailer-to-fifth-wheel contact surfaces | An approximately 1–3 mm film; clean grease grooves if substantial debris is present |
| Lubricate the locking mechanism | At least every three months or 48,000 km |
| Lubricate top-plate and bracket contact surfaces through their fittings | At least every three months or 48,000 km |
| Thoroughly clean and relubricate the locking mechanism | Every six months or 96,000 km |
| Additional winter service | If operated in snowy or icy winter conditions, lubricate additionally each spring |
The table preserves the manual’s distinction between checking surfaces and applying grease through fittings. For instance, weekly checks do not erase the separate three-month-or-48,000-km lubrication interval for the locking mechanism and top-plate/bracket contact surfaces. Follow the task description as well as its cadence.

For the FW20 procedure, SAF-HOLLAND specifies water-resistant, lithium-based grease. The specification belongs to this model’s instructions; do not assume it is suitable for every tractor or trailer fitting. The manual also directs the operator to keep the stated film on the contact surfaces and clean the grease grooves when substantial debris is present.
When conditions can move service ahead of the routine interval
Some operating or service events can remove lubricant or expose the component to conditions that call for attention sooner. Daimler Truck North America’s New Cascadia manual says to lubricate the covered fifth wheel after inspection, after power washing or steam cleaning, after operation in harsh salt spray or extremely dusty environments, and after service that removes lubricant from the head or components.

Those are instructions for the fifth-wheel procedures covered by that manual, not a blanket rule for every grease point on every truck. Follow the procedure for the installed fifth-wheel make. The New Cascadia material gives different procedures for Holland, Fontaine and Jost components, and low-lube plates may require treatment different from a standard plate. Do not transfer a procedure between designs based only on the fact that they are fifth wheels.

These conditions are best treated as additional service triggers, not as a replacement schedule. A vehicle can still be due for routine maintenance even if it has not recently been washed or exposed to severe conditions; conversely, one of the listed events may require attention before the normal due point.

Grease guns, grease and application method
Use the lubricant and application method specified for the component. A manual grease gun is a common tool for applying grease through fittings, but the suitable gun and pressure depend on the equipment instructions. Do not assume that a power gun is acceptable everywhere.
For the Jost lock procedure cited in the 5th Generation Cascadia maintenance manual, the instruction is to use a hand-pump grease gun on the kingpin-lock zerk. The manual warns: “Do not use a power grease gun. The pressure will damage the lube line.” This warning applies to that Jost procedure and component; it is not a general statement about every grease fitting.
The SAF-HOLLAND FW20’s water-resistant lithium-based grease requirement is likewise specific to the FW20 procedure. If a truck contains different makes or models of components, lubricant requirements may differ across the vehicle. Check each component’s manual rather than choosing one grease based on a specification for another part.
A practical way to keep separate intervals straight
For a fleet or owner-operator, the useful unit of scheduling is the component task—not simply “grease the truck.” Keep distinct entries for each applicable point or group of points, and preserve the manufacturer’s interval language. An entry should make clear whether it calls for inspection, grease application, cleaning and relubrication, or additional service after a triggering event.
- Component: Identify the tractor or trailer, component type, and make/model if known.
- Task: Write the action exactly enough to distinguish inspection from lubrication or cleaning.
- Due threshold: Record the time and distance criteria from the manual without dropping whichever-occurs-first language.
- Materials and method: Note the specified grease and any tool or application restrictions.
- Early-service triggers: Record relevant events such as the specific washing, environmental or repair conditions in the component instructions.
- Service record: Log when the task was completed and which component was serviced, so one completed job does not accidentally reset unrelated schedules.
This approach is especially important when a tractor and trailer are serviced together. The trailer’s suspension, axle or other fittings may have instructions distinct from the tractor’s chassis points and fifth wheel. Where the correct interval for a specific trailer or chassis is not established by the available information, the vehicle’s actual manufacturer documentation is needed; the general 12,000–24,000-mile estimate cannot resolve that gap.
Quick Recap
Common interval mistakes to avoid
- Applying the general mileage range to every fitting: Graco presents the range as a broad estimate, not an OEM-wide mandate. It does not replace instructions for an individual chassis or component.
- Treating an inspection cadence as a grease cadence: Read what the manual says to do at each interval; inspection, maintaining a contact-surface film and greasing through a fitting are different tasks.
- Assuming all fifth wheels are serviced alike: Procedures vary by make and design, including differences for low-lube plates.
- Using the same grease or tool everywhere: A grease specification or application restriction attached to one component should not be generalized to the rest of the vehicle.
- Ignoring service events between scheduled intervals: Washing, harsh contamination or repairs that remove lubricant may trigger earlier lubrication when the applicable manual says so.
