There is no dependable universal price for switching from gas to an induction cooktop. Your total is the cooktop plus any new electrical circuit or switchboard work, gas-line capping, countertop changes, permits and removal, minus any incentive you qualify for. The only reliable budget is an itemized quote for your home and location.
Published cost examples—and what they include
Official figures offer useful reference points, but they cover different countries, dates and scopes. They should not be added together or treated as a local installed quote.

The figures illustrate why geography and scope matter: a U.S. appliance example is not comparable to an Australian or New Zealand installed estimate. For a U.S. starting point, the CPUC booklet’s 2022 figures are dated and general; use them as context, not as a current bid.
What changes the price of your project?
Cooktop choice and countertop fit
Price the appliance separately, then check its dimensions against your existing countertop cutout before ordering. A different-size cooktop may require countertop alteration. Compare the appliance’s size, number of cooking zones and features, as recommended in NSW guidance; the Victoria fact sheet also identifies benchtop changes as a possible consideration.

Electrical capacity and circuit routing
Check the exact model’s electrical requirements with an electrician before buying. Many induction cooktops need a dedicated high-power circuit and hardwiring. If the switchboard lacks capacity or space, it may need work; routing a new circuit can also be more complicated in apartments and multilevel homes. Do not assume every house needs a service upgrade—or that yours will avoid one. Australian government NSW guidance says a typical single-phase supply is adequate for most all-electric households, while YourHome discusses appliance and electrical considerations.
Gas disconnection
Replacing the cooktop may require a licensed gas fitter to disconnect and cap the appliance’s gas line. If this is your last gas appliance, ask the utility about disconnecting the whole service and any ongoing connection charges; that is separate from capping the branch serving the cooktop. Cookware and permits
You may not need new pans. A magnet that sticks to the base is a practical sign that cookware is likely to work with induction, according to the Victoria fact sheet. Ask whether local permits apply and whether removal or disposal is included in the quote.
Check rebates before finalizing your budget
Rebates depend on location, program funding, appliance eligibility, household qualifications and application timing. Examples show why it is important to verify current local rules rather than assume a nationwide benefit:

How to get quotes you can compare
Ask contractors to price the same cooktop model and scope. Request separate line items for:
- Cooktop model and purchase price
- New circuit, wire run and breaker or switchboard work
- Gas disconnection and capping
- Countertop modification
- Permits, removal and disposal
- Any rebate or incentive applied at the point of sale
Ask whether the quote assumes clear access and adequate switchboard capacity, and what conditions could trigger additional charges. Use a qualified electrician for electrical installation and a qualified gas fitter where local rules require one. YourHome says electrical work must be done by a qualified electrician; the Victoria fact sheet recommends a qualified electrician and licensed gas fitter for the respective work.
